New Valley Governorate (Arabic: ‏محافظة الوادي الجديدMuḥāfaẓat al-Wādī l-Ǧadīd, IPA: [moˈħɑfzet elˈwæːdi lɡeˈdiːd]) is one of the governorates of Egypt. It is located in the southwestern part of the country, between the Nile, Sudan and Libya. With its capital at the Kharga Oasis, it is Egypt's largest governorate and one of the biggest on the African continent.

History

Violent clashes were reported in Wadi al-Jadid on February 8-9, 2011 as part of the 2011 Egyptian protests. Protesters lit police stations and the NDP party building on fire. Multiple deaths were reported in addition to hundreds of injuries amid claims that the police opened fire on protesters in Kharga oasis with live ammunition.[1][2]
