Wikipedia:Requested moves

Requested moves is a place for requesting the retitling of an article, a template, or a page in the Wikipedia namespace. Any autoconfirmed users can use the [move] tab located at the top of each page to perform simple moves (see Wikipedia:Moving a page). Unregistered users and users not yet confirmed may request moves here. Administrator help is required in some situations. Such moves can also be listed here.
In some situations the appropriateness of a move may be under dispute, and discussion is necessary in order to reach a consensus. There is no obligation to list such move requests here; this page may be seen as a place to advertise move debates that would benefit from wider community input, or for users to request assistance from administrators in moving pages.
Discussions about retitling of an article (page move) can always be carried out at the article's talk page without adding an entry here. See the directions in the section Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
Most move requests are processed by a handful of regular contributors who are familiar with naming conventions, nonbinding precedents, and page moving procedures. Two pages often cited during move discussions, which you might want to familiarize yourself with before making your request, are our naming convention regarding primary topics and our guideline on using common English names. See also the How to Determine Wikipedia Article Titles and Title discussions essays for additional guidance. Requests are generally processed after seven days, although backlogs often develop. If there is a clear consensus after this time, the request will be closed and acted upon. If not, the closer may choose to re-list the request to allow time for consensus to develop, or close it as "no consensus". The processes involved in closing requests, performing moves and necessary tidying tasks when a move is performed can be viewed at closing instructions.
[edit] Processes beyond the scope of this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page#Moving a file page.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion.
- Moves from user space – (new/unconfirmed users only) add
{{subst:AFC submission/submit}}to the top of the article. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen.
[edit] Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves
Do not put more than one move request on the same article talk page, as this is not supported by the bot that handles updates to this page. (For requesting multiple moves, see below.)
This process is only necessary if there is any reason to believe a requested move would be contested.
A new section should be made on the talk page of the discussed page, as explained in the section below. For uncontroversial move requests (e.g. spelling and capitalization fixes), see Uncontroversial requests below.
[edit] Requesting a single page move
If your proposal involves moving more than one page—for example, if you will need to move one page to move another page to that title—please use the process for "Requesting multiple page moves" below.
Create a section at the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved. It should be formatted like this:
== Requested move ==
{{subst:requested move|NewName}} Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. ~~~~
The name of the section does not necessarily need to be "Requested move", though it is suggested. "NewName" is what you want the new name of the page to be. If there was a previous discussion use == Requested move xxxx== where xxxx can be the year if that is appropriate or 2 for the second discussion.
This can also be done by clicking the "new section" tab on the talk page and inserting {{subst:RMtalk|Proposed new name|Reason for move.}} Note that the Subject/headline should be left blank, as the heading, Requested move, is created along with a location for survey and discussion by this template, and that the template must be substituted. The template will also automatically include your signature.
[edit] Requesting multiple page moves
On one of the talk pages of the affected articles, create a request and format it as below. The following is an example for three pages.
Note that the article specified for current1 is the article for the talk page where you are holding the discussion. For example, if you were proposing a move for the article Wikipedia and other articles, you put this template on Talk:Wikipedia and current1 would be Wikipedia.
== Requested move ==
{{subst:move-multi
| current1 = Current title of page 1
| new1 = New title for page 1
| current2 = Current title of page 2
| new2 = New title for page 2
| current3 = Current title for page 3
| new3 = New title for page 3
| reason = Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. Do not sign this.
It is not necessary to sign a request using this template with ~~~~ as the template does this automatically. Do not skip pairs of numbers. The template currently supports up to 30 listings.
After you make your move request on the talk page of one of the articles, per above, RM bot will automatically place a notice on the talk page of the additional pages that are included in your request, advising that the move discussion is in progress, where it is, and that all discussion for all pages included in the request should take place at that one location.
The template {{movenotice}} can be used on the current page (not the talk page) to draw attention to the proposed move and the discussion on the appropriate talk page.
[edit] Uncontroversial requests
If there has been any past debate about the best title for the page, or if anyone could reasonably disagree with the move, then treat it as controversial. Otherwise, post your request in the sub-section Current requests immediately below this section.
If the page has recently been moved without discussion, then you may revert the move (although this is not necessary) and initiate a discussion of the move on the talk page of the article. (See also: Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle.) If this reversion requires administrator assistance, it is also eligible to be listed here. When listing this kind of request, please include a link showing that you have attempted to discuss the page move first.
If the move you are suggesting is uncontroversial (e.g. spelling and capitalization), please feel free to move the page yourself. If you cannot move the page yourself, then request it below. Only list proposals here that are clearly uncontroversial but require assistance from an administrator or confirmed user.
If the only obstacle to an uncontroversial move is a navigation aid (e.g., a redirect or an unnecessary disambiguation page with a minor edit history), the template {{db-move}} can be used instead to have that page deleted under criterion for speedy deletion G6. Note that this template requires two parameters: {{db-move|page to be moved here|reason for move}}.
Otherwise list new uncontroversial requests at the bottom of the sub-section "Current requests" immediately below this section using {{subst:RMassist|Old page name|Requested name|Reason for move}} (rather than copying other entries). The template will automatically insert a bullet and include your signature. No edits to the article's talk page are required.
If you object to a proposal listed in Current requests, please re-list it in the Contested requests section below.

- This section lists all requests filed or identified as potentially controversial which are currently under discussion.
| Do not attempt to edit this list manually; a bot will automatically update the page soon after the {{subst:Requested move}} template is added to the discussion on the relevant talk page. The entry is removed automatically when the discussion is closed. To make a change to an entry, make the change on the linked talk page. |

- (Discuss) – Copula (statistics) → Copula (probability theory) – Reasons: * Copulas (the way they are presented here) do fit to almost none of the methodologies described on Statistics. * The copula page does not state anything about estimation, hypothesis testing, Null hypothesis, Error, Interval estimation, Significance. And these terms are "Key terms used in statistics" according to Statistics. * Copulas are rather a construction from probability theory: It's constructed, defined and described as a transformation of a probability measure on
to [0,1]d.* From an academic point of view, copulas are interesting because they allow for a separation of dependence structure and marginal distributions. Statistical aspects are secondary.. The result is that we have been left with no consistent naming scheme for the articles and categories referring to the athletic teams at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. These moves will provide such a coherent naming scheme. As I have argued elsewhere, and which AllisonFoley referenced above, the way that major media outlets, the NCAA, and any relevant athletic conference make their structural namings of athletic teams in things like standings (e.g. [1] and team homepages (e.g. [2], should be the leading directive for Wikipedia naming schemes. - (Discuss) – Species of StarCraft → Races of StarCraft – Since the Zerg are by no means a single species (which can be plainly seen by reading their description in this article or anywhere else), it makes little sense for this article to be called 'Species of StarCraft.' To state it simply, the Zerg are a collective, similar to the Borg of Star Trek, made up of many species. So scientifically, using that term makes no sense. Also, more importantly, the term 'species' has little-to-no history of usage in this context, while 'race' has frequently been used in-game, in the literature of the game, by Blizzard staff and by players. I will find references if necessary, but I think any players of the StarCraft series already know this. -- Fyrefly (talk) 14:59, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Health insurance coverage in the United States → Health uninsured in the United States – I think the previous move from "Uninsured in the United states" to "Health insurance coverage in the United States" by Designate was for the better overall, clarifying that it's about health insurance. However, it must still be pointed out that the emphasis is on the uninsured. The current naming of this article does not invite to contribute anything about uninsured people, such as assistance programs that could help them - it only makes the article appear to cover the demographic aspect of health insurance coverage. With the current classification, there is no article to add information about people without health insurance in the United States. Therefore, I think this article needs to be moved to People without health insurance in the United States or, as suggested above Health uninsured in the United States. - (Discuss) – Crusaders (rugby) → Crusaders (rugby franchise) – These are all the names of rugby teams in Super Rugby that must be disambiguated. There is no correct regional qualifier for any of them so they need a disambiguating word or phrase. My reading of WP:NCDAB seems to suggest (rugby) "avoid proper nouns" and "choose whichever is simpler". However there are other rugby teams under most of these designations so "Super Rugby" may be justified to prevent any possible confusion with Cardiff Blues, Exeter Chiefs, Sale Sharks etc. Personally I would prefer rugby team or rugby franchise as that makes it clearer what they are, but am really just hoping something could be decided upon to keep the article titles more consistent. Looking at some histories they seem to have moved all over the place,[3][4] but I have been unable to find a centralised discussion or convincing arguments in the edit summaries one way or the other. So I am starting one here. AIRcorn (talk) 06:24, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

- (Discuss) – Goethe's Faust → Faust (Goethe) – To conform with usual disambiguation naming conventions. - (Discuss) – Spark (fire) → Spark (particle) – The current disambiguation term used for this article is misleading and imprecise. It's misleading in that it may imply to readers that all the kinds of sparks which are discussed in this article are in some way all undergoing combustion, which they are not, as sparks produced by a grinder or the Bessmer process are in fact just hot incandescent particles. It's imprecise in that the sparks discussed in this article are not the only sparks associated with fire, as the sparks discussed in Electric spark are also commonly used for starting fires. This move was discussed earlier this year, but the discussion died out as no perfect disambiguation term could be found. But I say we should not let the perfect be an enemy of the good, and as I see it "Spark (particle)" goes a long way towards more accurately describing the subject of this article, as all the sparks discussed in this article are small incandescent particles.TheFreeloader (talk) 14:28, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Also, the word "Sankt" is a German word, not an English one, and therefore "Sankt Pölten-Land District" is Denglish. On the other hand, "St." is an accepted abbreviation for both "Sankt" and its English equivalent ("Saint"), and therefore appropriate for both languages. Bahnfrend (talk) 10:35, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

- (Discuss) – List of cast members of Lost → Character timelines in Lost (TV series) – or "List of character timelines in Lost (TV series)", "List of (cast members/characters) of Lost (TV series)", "List of Lost (TV series) (cast members/characters)"I think the problem here is that this is a timeline, not really a list. The title is slightly misleading as the list is of the characters, not cast, with their associated actors and so should not really be named as a cast list; if it was, the cast should be vertically listed, not the characters. There are two TV series and two films that use the title "Lost". The page was recently moved, although there was a previous move request that was passed as "no consensus to move". The previous title, "List of Lost (TV series) characters" was stable and seemed as if the only thing that needed changing was "characters" -> "cast".List of character timelines in the Lost (TV series) might be a better choice as it uses "series", thereby demarking from the two films and accurately conveys that the timeline is the main point of the article. - (Discuss) – Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse → Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse – Genesee Lighthouse]] → Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse – Now, let it be known I'm a big proponent of MOS:DASH and I generally support its provisions. However, I think they were misapplied when this article was moved most recently from Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse to Charlotte–Genesee Lighthouse. The punctuation mark here is not used to indicate disjunction, nor a range, nor any sort of "to-from" relationship. Indeed MOS:HYPHEN specifically says "Hyphens ... indicate conjunction". In this title, "Charlotte" is the surrounding community, and "Genesee" is the adjacent body of water; thus, I believe conjunction is what we should be indicating, not disjunction. - (Discuss) – Environmental implications of nanotechnology → Environmental impact of nanotechnology – The lengthy discussion between Antony and I above has resulted in the realization that we are not going to convince each other about what the title of this article should be, so we have together decided to request input from the wider community. I believe that Environmental implications of nanotechnology should be moved to Environmental impact of nanotechnology in order to be consistent with the many other articles about human impact on the environment, such as Environmental impact of agriculture, Environmental impact of biodiesel, Environmental impact of paint, Environmental impact of aviation, etc. All the other articles of this type follow the "Environmental impact of x" title format. The three other "implications of nanotechnology" articles should similarly employ the word "impact" instead of "implications" so that they will be consistent with Environmental impact of nanotechnology. Antony and I have agreed that there is no semantic or connotative difference between the words "implications" and "impact", therefore our disagreement rests solely in our interpretation of Wikipedia's article title policy. The phrase "implications of nanotechnology" is moderately more frequent in literature on the subject than "impact of nanotechnology", although Antony and I agree that WP:COMMONNAME does not apply to this case because neither "implications of nanotechnology" nor "impact of nanotechnology" are proper nouns, and WP:COMMONNAME explicitly applies only to proper nouns. Antony has invoked the sentence in the lede of WP:TITLE that states that "Generally, article titles are based on what the subject is called in reliable sources." Because the phrase "impact of nanotechnology" appears quite frequently in the literature, I do not believe that this sentence supports the "implications of nanotechnology" format much more than the "impact of nanotechnology" format. What I believe to be the relevant policy is WP:PRINCIPALNAMINGCRITERIA, which argues for consistency, stating that "titles are expected to follow the same pattern as those of similar articles." If the four articles implicated in this move request are moved as I have suggested, all of the articles about the environmental impact of things will follow a consistent title format and all of the impact of nanotechnology articles will follow a consistent title format, and all of the titles will still be phrases that are common in the literature. - (Discuss) – Samudra mathanam → Samudra manthan – Restore to old name. The article name "Samudra mathanam" currently uses the nominative singular form of the root "samudra-mathan", which is not the convention of naming Hinduism-related articles. Ganesha, Shiva, Vishnu, Krishna, Rama, Surya, Indra etc. are all root forms, not nominative singulars like "Ganeshah" et al. Nominative singular are used for Brahma, Iravan where the root Brahman (masuline the personal god; neuter the Spirit Brahman) or Iravat (masuline: Iravan; feminine: Iravati) do not sinularly identify the article subject. Also, Ganesha, Shiva, Vishnu, Krishna, Rama, Surya, Indra, Brahma have become part of other Indian languages in this form. The same applies to Samudra manthan. Though the original root word is "mathan" in Sanskrit, the vernacular corruption "manthan" has become much other popular. "Samudra mathan" [9] gives 3 results with "Did you mean: "samudra manthan" v/s "Samudra manthan" 972 [10]. - (Discuss) – Cần Thơ → Can Tho – According to WP:Naming_conventions_(geographic_names): Consult English-language encyclopedias (we recommend Encyclopedia Britannica, Columbia Encyclopedia, Encarta, each as published after 1993). If the articles in these agree on using a single name in discussing the period, it is the widely accepted English name. None of these sources use Vietnamese diacritics. That should settle the issue, but nonetheless editors ask, “What’s the harm in putting them in anyway?” Vietnamese diacritics have near zero usage in published English. Not even the official Vietnam News Agency uses them. I checked Lonely Planet's Vietnam and Frommer's Vietnam’s, and the guidebooks don’t use them either. For readers who know this, a title with Vietnamese diacritics will appear to be non-English. Those who do not know this might be misled into thinking that the diacritics are mainstream English-language usage. The version of the name with diacritics would still appear both in boldface the opening and on top of the box (if applicable), so no information would be lost. The version of the name without diacritics should appear somewhere in the article. The most logical place for it is the title since a typeable title is easier to search for and easier to link to. The issue of Vietnamese diacritics in biography articles was discussed earlier at Talk:Ngo Bao Chau and Talk:Dang Huu Phuc. There are no borderline cases in this group. Each one has an entry in Britannica where the city name is given without diacritics. Kauffner (talk) 06:00, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Vegaswikian (talk) 05:34, 28 July 2011 (UTC) This article was moved to Playas de Rosarito Municipality (Baja California) with the rationale that this is English wikipedia, however, this is the official name of the municipality not the name of a beach,. First of all this move was not discussed and second of all the official name is not always the title of the article. Common examples include in cities the article title is never Cidade do São Paulo or Villa de Madrid but São Paulo and Madrid. Others include counties; Mexico is located at Mexico, not the United Mexican States, or rather the Spanish language version of that title. To the best of my knowledge common English usage shows Rosarito Beach Municipality to be the common name.08OceanBeachS.D. 09:27, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

- (Discuss) – Waldemar Matuška → Waldemar Matuska – Since this is an English website, names of the articles/persons should be in English per MOS:FOREIGN & WP:ENGLISH. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:57, 27 July 2011 (UTC) Per almost all sources in this article, the current (though temporary) name of this moon, since its existence was verified (today), has been "P4". It should therefore be moved from what was apparently its pre-verification name (S/2011 P 1) to P4, per WP:COMMONNAME. Since there already is a disambiguation page at P4, the correct title (which is where it was before it was moved here) is P4 (moon). I tried to move it there but apparently someone edited the redirect, which means the P4 (moon) redirect would first have to be deleted by an admin. Neutron (talk) 21:48, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

- (Discuss) – HC Sibir → HC Sibir Novosibirsk – Relisted. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:16, 27 July 2011 (UTC) As far as I know, "HC Sibir" and "HC Severstal" are simply short versions of the clubs' actual respective names. Although I am aware that the clubs' official sites may not refer to the clubs directly as "HC Sibir Novosibirsk" and "Severstal Cherepovets" (see [15] and [16]), "HC Sibir Novosibirsk" and "Severstal Cherepovets" seem to be more common names for these respective clubs. As far as I know, Russian clubs (at least the KHL ones) do not use "HC" in their club name. Also, in case anyone's wondering, the reason why I want the "HC" part removed in "HC Severstal" but not in "HC Sibir" is because only the hockey club is named "Severstal Cherepovets", while there's also an association football club named "Sibir Novosibirsk". - (Discuss) – Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's indoor tournament – Men's tournament]] → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's indoor tournament– "Volleyball" in the Olympic context seems to refer to both volleyball in general, and indoor volleyball specifically. I think we need to clarify this, and create a uniform pattern for the names of these articles. Since both indoor and beach volleyball are covered in Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics article, and the sports are basically the same, the prefix bit should be uniform, hence this proposal. When this issue is decided, we can go on with the older Olympics tournaments, which follow neither of the above name patterns. HandsomeFella (talk) 06:51, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
