Wikipedia:Portal peer review

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  (Redirected from Wikipedia:PPREV)
Jump to: navigation, search

Wikipedia's portal peer review process exposes portals to closer scrutiny from a broader group of editors, and is intended for high-quality portals that have already undergone extensive work, often as a way of preparing a featured portal candidate. This is not academic peer review by a group of experts in a particular subject, and portals that undergo this process should not be assumed to have greater authority than any other.

For feedback on portals that are less developed, use the portal's talk page first.

At present, there are 150 featured portals, of a total of 1084 portals on Wikipedia.

The path to a featured portal

  1. Start a new portal
  2. Develop the portal
  3. Check against the featured portal criteria

Nomination procedure

Anyone can request a portal peer review. The best way to get lots of reviews is to reply promptly and appreciatively on this page to any comments. If you post a request, please do not discourage reviewers by ignoring their efforts. To add a nomination:

  1. Place {{subst:PPR}} at the top of the portal's talk page, creating a portal peer review notice to notify other editors of the review.
  2. Within the notice, click "request has been made" to open a new discussion page.
  3. Paste {{subst:PPRnom|portal name= |text= }} at the top, with the name of the portal in the "portal name" parameter, and then note the kind of comments/contributions you want, and/or the sections of the portal you think need reviewing in the "text" parameter. Signature is automatically appended. Save the new page.
  4. Edit this page here, pasting {{Wikipedia:Portal peer review/PORTAL NAME/archive1}} at the top of the list of nominees.
  5. Add the portal to the current requests list. You can add this list to your talk page using {{Wikipedia:Portal peer review/Requests‎}} You also can use {{FPcandidates}} to include featured portal candidates.
  1. Optional steps:
    1. Start a new section on the portal's talk page using ==Portal peer review==
    2. Paste {{Wikipedia:Portal peer review/PORTAL NAME}} into that section.
    3. Add {{todo}} at the top of the portal's talk page, then save the page.
    4. Edit and paste the following into the to do list. Summarize recommendations and replies as they occur:

List includes recommendations with replies/status.
<br clear="both">

Your review may be more successful if you politely request feedback on the discussion pages of related articles, portals, and/or send messages to Wikipedians who have contributed to the same or a related field, including the list of portal peer review volunteers.

How to respond to a request

  • Review one of the portals listed below. If you think something is wrong—e.g., portal length, the introduction, poor grammar/spelling, missing topics—post a comment in the portal's section on this page.
  • Feel free to correct the portal yourself. Please consider noting your edits here to keep others informed about the portal's progress.

How to remove a request
You may remove to the current archive any

  • inactive listings or listings older than one month;
  • inappropriate or abandoned listings (where the nominator has not replied to comments);
  • portals that have become featured portal candidates.

After removing the listing, contributors should:

  1. replace the {{portalpeerreview}} tag on the portal's talk page with {{Oldportalpeerreview|archive=1}} (replacing "=1" with the archive number of the peer review if it is not the first);
  2. update Wikipedia:Portal peer review/Requests/List

How to resubmit a request
If your request has been removed, please feel free to renominate it for portal peer review at a later time:

  1. Place {{subst:PPR}} at the top of the portal's talk page as described above
  2. Place {{Wikipedia:Portal peer review/PORTAL NAME/archiveN}} (where N is the review number) at the top of the list of nominees below.

[edit] Portal:Queensland

Seeking general improvements needed to raise the portal's standard Shiftchange (talk) 09:31, 26 January 2011 (UTC) - Shiftchange

Just a suggestion, perhaps you can add some links to Wikipedia:Books? That could fill in that gap at the bottom. Other than that, IMO it's a fine looking portal. And it's interesting too, I love learning about other places and this portal really held my interest. (sorry this isn't an actual peer review, I'm not much of a portal editor, I just enjoy browsing them.) -- œ 11:24, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Renewable energy

Portal peer review requested please, to provide feedback on what we have done so far, and what else we could do to improve things... Johnfos (talk) 00:13, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Images
Clarification please: The selected pictures all have captions, so you are not referring to these, right. You're referring to the small images (typically 180px) that appear mainly with the selected articles, and you are wanting mouseover captions for these... as we have for Portal:Renewable energy/Selected article/14... Sounds fine to me. Johnfos (talk) 06:24, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I was referring to that, and most pictures from 6 onwards don't seem to have them, no articles, biographies..... It is a criteria also, see criteria 4. --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 02:19, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Feel free to go in and make the necessary improvements to captions... Johnfos (talk) 23:18, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Photo credit is provided if clicking on the image. Whether it needs to be provided in the image caption is an open question, most portals do however. --Elekhh (talk) 02:17, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
Selected articles

I'm actually more interested in getting together a collection of about 20 good solid selected articles. Suggestions for additional articles are welcome. Johnfos (talk) 00:00, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

The Geysers. --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 03:48, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
Good choice -- added at Portal:Renewable energy/Selected article/15... Johnfos (talk) 04:09, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, more to come later. --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 09:15, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
I certainly hear what you are saying about small scale renewable energy systems, and added the Solar water heating article in response to your original comment on this. But it is difficult to find more quality articles on small scale systems. Johnfos (talk) 21:42, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Even though Selected articles should have a relevant image, I have added Mandatory renewable energy target, per your suggestion. The Renewable energy commercialization article (SA 12) also covers aspects of policy. Johnfos (talk) 21:54, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
DYK

The advantage of a fixed pool of selected content which is displayed randomly is that it requires little maintenance. However this system does not encourage viewers to return to the page. Currently most sections (Selected article, picture, biography, DYK, quotations) are based on this system, while only the News section provides new content. I think in order to keep the portal interesting for editors it might be good to replace the DYK with a nomination based system where new articles or significantly expanded articles can be featured. The criteria and format could be similar with the main page DYK, but with smaller thresholds (i.e. 1,000 words new article, 3x expansion). For better page organisation the DYK would fit than better on the right hand side below the News, while the quotations would fit better below the biography section. Any thoughts? --Elekhh (talk) 02:17, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

I've gotten quite used to the current portal layout and think that overall it is looking quite good. So, I have to admit, your suggestion doesn't grab me. But what do others think? Johnfos (talk) 21:35, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Coverage and balance

This comment has been made: "currently 11 of 19 selected images are about solar energy > need better balance". But only 4 of the 15 selected articles are about solar. So I think, across the portal, the coverage and balance is actually quite good. Johnfos (talk) 21:38, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
