Summary

In this tutorial, you learned the difference between a character set and a character encoding. You learned how to select a character encoding for your documents and how to specify it so that user agents can use it. You also learned how to use character references to insert characters into your document in order to use characters outside the scope of your selected encoding or to make sure they are not considered markup. In the next tutorial, we will examine how you can specify the language of your document to aid readers and user agents in understanding your documents.
