News Corp. Loses $6.4 Billion in 2Q -- Huge Write-Down of Assets Blamed (AP)
News Corp. lost $6.4 billion in its most recent quarter because of a massive write-down in the value of its assets. The company also forecast a 30 percent drop in operating profits for the fiscal year to June from a year ago, when it earned $5.13 billion. NYT: One bright spot was cable networks, including Fox News. The division reported income of $428 million, up $91 million from the period a year earlier.
Drew Schutte Named Senior Vice President Conde Nast Digital (FishbowlNY)
Conde Nast Digital, formerly known as CondeNet, has named Drew Schutte senior vice president & chief revenue officer effective immediately. Lisa Hughes has been tapped to take over Schutte's former position as vice president & publisher of The New Yorker. NYT: Hughes takes over a magazine clearly in need of help: The New Yorker's ad pages dropped 26.8 percent in 2008.
Wall Street Journal to Cut 14 (FishbowlNY)
Layoffs have arrived at the Wall Street Journal. Managing editor Robert Thomson announced in a memo that 14 positions will be eliminated, and the Fashion and Retail group will be closed. According to Thomson: "The number [of layoffs], while regrettable, has been kept to a minimum."
