KEVIN
KEEGAN
Outstanding
as a forward
in midfield,
Kevin Keegan
epitomised
the modern
player who
reaped rich
financial
rewards from
his skills.
Signing as
an apprentice
for Scunthorpe
United in
1967, he became
a full professional
12 months
later and
in 1971 moved
to Liverpool
where he played
on the winning
team in the
FA Cup 1974,
the European
1977, the
UEFA Cup 1973
and 1976 and
the Football
League 1973,
1976-7.
In the summer
of 1977 he
left Liverpool
for SV Hamburg
and helped
them to the
Buindesliga
title in 1979
and the finals
of the European
Cup in 1980.
After 2 years
at the Dell
he moved to
Newcastle
United where
he remained
until his
retirement
in May 1984.
He returned
there as Manager
in 1992 with
immediate
success as
they won Division
One in 1992/3
and were third
in the Premier
League 1993/4.
He won 63
caps for England
in 1972-82
and captained
the team on
many occasions.
He was equally
adept at scoring
or creating
goals and
it is testimony
to his great
talent that
he won 5 Footballer
of the Year
awards; European
1978-9 (only
the second
player after
Johan Cruyff
to win this
award in successive
years), English
1976 and 1982
and West Germany
1978. He was
awarded the
OBE in 1982.
