enter .can i break that password or i need to reinstall it again.what

I am a rather newbie in linux. I am using DeveloperIQ linux which is a subset of Red Hat linux v.8 (mostly). I am not able to open any kde based program like Kdevelop,Koffice etc. niether I am able to use GhostScript and ggv, Adobe acrobat reader etc.

I have recently installed FedoraCore 2 in the same hard disk which is originally booted from Windows XP. However, I can boot the Linux from the Grub Bootloader and fail to boot from Windows XP again.

I've forgotten the root password and have tried to recover by logging in as single mode and changing the password.
