- Magnificent Bastard: Fresh. For being a 13 year old kid, he has quickly proved himself to be a master manipulator on par with Sun Tzu without either gangs realizing about his manipulative behavior. Using whatever means necessary to not only escape from the life he once idolized, but also, to protect his sister, Fresh ultilizes his own experiences with chess to fully punish the two gangs by putting them against each-other, essentially protecting her from all dangers, although he did come across the harsh realization that he sacrificed everything in order to do so.

- Jake definitely crossed it when he murders both Curtis and Rosie, the former because he beat him at a basketball game!.
- Squick: One of the hookers, presumably Jake's girlfriend, offers to suck Fresh's pecker. Bear in mind that she's saying it to a 13 year-old kid.
- True Art Is Angsty: Due to the movie's dark and grim tone about why the hood life is anything but glamorous, fans admit that it portrays it in such a realistic matter.
- What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: While the main protagonist is 13-years old, it is full of graphic violence, swearing, drug usage, and some sexual content all done in a realistic fashion making it too mature for a child audience.
