Bonus point if the band is theistically Satanist. The exact requirements of kvltness vary depending on who you talk to, but usually involve icy, impenetrable production, black-and-white cover art, barely sold any copies and concepts drawn from black magic, Satanism, pagan myths or out-and-out nihilism.
"Black metal is just Surf Rock with distortion". ExplanationRefers to the sound when adding distortion to surf rock which happens to mimick black metal's chord progression. There is a Truth in Television element here: both genres utilise significant amount of rapid (alternating) tremolo picking: just the way surf rock and black metal do are completely different: surf rock retains the bluesy, major-scale rock character, while black metal adopted scales from Death Metal and Thrash Metal with much higher tunings. There's even an actual album called "Black Tides" by a band Kólga that actually combines elements of black metal and surf rock.
