The Mouse Comes to Dinner is an animated Tom and Jerry short released on May 5th, 1945 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.

Tom invited Toots for a romantic dinner, upon seeing a huge banquet prepared by Mammy Two Shoes. In a situation that mirrors the events of "Puss n' Toots", Tom forces Jerry to do tasks to help the development of the date. Jerry quickly gets tired of this and retaliates. Cue Food Fight between the two.

Tropes:

• Agony of the Feet: After Jerry spits soup on Tom's face, Tom retaliates by placing the spoon that Jerry is standing on directly above a candle's flame, causing Jerry to burn his feet and bottom before forcing to jump and land onto a large stick of butter, which melts on contact.
• Bowdlerise: The appearance of Mammy Two Shoes is cut out in later broadcasts, which results in a very harsh edit as the cartoon now starts with Tom popping up out of a potted plant for seemingly no reason at all.
• Delayed Reaction: As Jerry greedily munches on cheese and crackers, Tom hits him on the head with a spoon. Jerry keeps eating for a few seconds longer, then reacts to the blow on the head and keels over.
• Impact Silhouette: Jerry uses the candle over Tom's tail, and Tom ends up flying into the ceiling, making a hole of him.
• Pie in the Face: Tom throws the pie at Toots during their Food Fight. Toots decides to throw her pie at him back.
• Suddenly Speaking: After Tom places his butt on an oil lamp without realizing it, Tom sniffs something in the air and asks "Hey, what's cookin'?", to which Toots replies: "You are, stupid!"
• Tongue Trauma: At one point, Jerry inadvertently enters Tom's mouth and the latter tries to close it to eat him. Jerry reacts by stretching Tom's tongue, resulting in him painfully biting it.
