Set in a world inhabited by human-sized anthropomorphic mice (making it one of only two Dingo Pictures feature to focus entirely on anthropomorphic animals, the other being their Easter Bunny duology), despite the title, the story actually focuses on a duo of mouse children, the Brother–Sister Team of Max and Sophie, who become Amateur Sleuths trying to take down the notorious Rocky Roquefort gang, a local crime syndicate who tries to steal all the cheese in their town.
The movie contains examples of:
- Amateur Sleuth: Max and Sophie are just a pair of snooping little kids who happen to be the niece and nephew of Officer Theobald.
- Ambiguously Absent Parent: Max and Sophie's parents are neither seen or mentioned, nor are they apparently aware that their children are getting tangled up with organized crime, including planning to fight The Mafia during their trip to Italy.
- Bilingual Bonus: The "Julius Cheesar" statue at the end will go unnoticed by anyone unfamiliar with the German language.
- Bound and Gagged: How Willi is introduced, after getting his cheese truck robbed by the criminals.
- Child Hater: Freddy Gorgonzola, who is immediately hostile towards Sophie when she greets him, and later looks very gleeful after being ordered to catch the snooping kids.
- Dirty Coward: Willi Appenzell is made out to be this for being afraid to take on the crime gang, but he actually comes across as the most sensible character, since he instead goes to inform the police, which leads to Rocky and his crew getting busted.
- Fat Bastard: Most of the Roquefort gang, including Rocky himself, the brainless door guard Birdy, and the eye patch-wearing member.
- Fat Idiot: Birdy, the door guard of the Roquefort gang. They probably would have gotten away with their crimes if he wasn't so monumentally stupid as to let Max and Sophie into their hideout just because they learned the secret password after eavesdropping on Freddy saying it.
- Gratuitous Italian: Rocky Roquefort speaks with a stereotypical Super Mario-style accent and peppers his vocabulary with Italian words.
- Kick the Dog: After Sophie gets captured by the gang, the hooker mouse releases a bunch of spiders to swarm the girl, knowing she has severe arachnophobia, purely For the Evulz.
- Lean and Mean: Freddy Gorgonzola is a lanky jogger, while Rocky and the rest of the male gang members are all overweight.
- Limited Animation: As per tradition with Dingo Pictures. Special mention goes to Sophie skipping over some rocks to cross a stream, or rather, we just see a still frame of her jump cuts over the rocks.
- Living Prop: Two of the gang members, one with an eye patch and one where we only see the back of his head, don't say or do anything. They are just there to show that the Rocky Roquefort gang has more than just four members.
- The Mafia: Rocky Roquefort, who himself is Italian, and his gang work for them, with their unseen boss from Italy being named Alfredo Mozzarella.
- A Mouse Named "Mozzarella": The unseen benefactor of the Roquefort gang is actually named Alfredo Mozzarella, and one the gang members is named Freddy Gorgonzola.
- The Oldest Profession: The only female member of the Rocky Roquefort gang looks like a stereotypical hooker and is implied to be one, down to always holding a cigar in her hand.
- Precision F-Strike: Two examples. The first one is Theobald saying "shit" after learning that he's off the case. The second is by the door guard for the Rocky Roquefort gang, who mutters "smart ass" after being chastised for his incompetence.
- Severely Specialized Store: Aunt Antjes’s store sells only cheese. When Willi got robbed she has none to sell.
- Small Town Boredom: The characters live in a small town where something interesting almost never happens, hence why the protagonists jump at the chance to fight crime. Theobald gets frustrated when he's taken off the case because he rarely gets to do anything.
- Stock Animal Diet: Cheese for mice, so the Rocky Roquefort gang robbing cheese trucks is treated like a big crisis by the other mice.
- Vocal Dissonance: A staple of Dingo Pictures. The prepubescent Max is voiced by a grown man not even trying to sound remotely youthful, while both Willi and the Fat Bastard door guard are clearly voiced by a woman. Like most of their movies, this is averted in the original German dub, which has multiple voice actors as opposed to just one man and one woman doing all the voice work.
- The Voiceless: The eye patch-wearing member of Rocky's gang never utters a word.
- "Wanted!" Poster: At the start of the film, a wanted poster of Rocky Roquefort is shown getting shot by someone.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Sophie is afraid of spiders. When she’s caught by the gang, they torment her by leaving her tied up in a room with spiders.
- You All Look Familiar: Max and Sophie are obviously the same design but with different clothes. Many of the adult mice also have the same face as the former. Meanwhile, Willi and Rocky are also clearly the same design, with the former having perma stubbles and a bushy gray mustache, while the latter is clean shaven sans his black pencil mustache.
