Head over Heels is a 2012 stop motion animated short film (10 minutes) from Britain.
It's about an old married couple, Walter and Madge. Whatever romance once existed between the two of them seems to be gone. They appear to live in separate worlds, not speaking, barely acknowledging the other's existence. And also, they live in a bizarre house where each person's floor is the other one's ceiling, and gravity seems to pull away from the center and towards the ceilings/floors. And the whole house is floating through a cloudy sky.
The film was written and directed by Timothy Reckart.
This film provides examples of:
- All There in the Manual: The characters are never named in the short, since there isn't any dialogue, but in the credits they are named Walter and Madge.
- Binocular Shot: The standard binoculars view is shown as Walter looks out with binoculars and sees Madge walking around on the strange new place where their house has landed.
- Bizarrchitecture: Each person's floor is the other one's ceiling. The opposing gravitational directions are permanent for the couple, but inanimate objects conform to the gravity of the floor they're closest to (more or less).
- Dead Sparks: A picture of a joyful Walter and Madge on their wedding day indicates that it wasn't always this way, but now the two of them ignore each other.
- Rekindled Sparks: Madge takes all of her shoes and nails them to the ceiling—her ceiling anyway—so she can walk around in Walter's half of the house. She wobbles over to him and they embrace.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: The couple's opposing gravity directions make it difficult for them to interact, although the framed picture suggests that things were once different.
- The Stinger: A mid-credits scene shows Madge walking around the area where their house landed, holding Walter, still floating in the air, like a balloon.
- Stop Motion: Stop motion animation with figurines.
- This Is My Side: Each person's possessions mainly stay on their own floor, but the couple can't agree on which way the framed picture should hang.
