Witches Among Humans

Luz Noceda is the most wanted criminal in the Boiling Isles. Raised as a wild witch, Luz is a master of all magics and uses her powers to undermine the oppressive system that rules over her people. One day, a quest went terribly wrong and now she has been sent to another realm: Earth.

After several issues, it was temporarily dropped when the author returned to making his standard one-shots but was eventually brought back in 2024. This series also serves as the inspiration for Among Humans.

Witches Among Humans provides examples of:

• Aborted Declaration of Love: In the "Feelings" comic, Luz, having had to likely reject Amity's feelings due to not wanting Lilith to harm her, arrives home and prepares to send a text confessing her love; sadly, she goes against sending it.
• Accursed Automobile: After Luz magics Eda's car to life it gains sentience, wings, and fangs. It may desire to eat Boscha.
• Adaptation Species Change: In this version of the story, Luz is a witch, King is a cat and everyone else is human. Demons are still demons. Belos is also shown to be a witch when he's introduced.
• Adaptational Badass: In canon, Luz's mother Camila is a vet who finds Luz's willful, though admittedly destructive imagination exasperating. Here she raised Luz as a wild witch (which, if the Boiling Isles in the comic is anything like the show, is illegal).
• Adaptational Villainy: The strip has the Bat Queen and other demons go on rampages in the Human World that Luz has to stop.
• Age Lift: Luz is 16 and presumably so are Amity, Willow and Boscha; whereas in the source material they were around thirteen or fourteen.
• The Alleged Car: Eda's car is prone to having its engine randomly die. It eventually gets brought to life by Luz to remedy the problem.
• Anachronic Order: The comics don't appear to be told in any specific order. For example, after several issues being dedicated to the progression of Luz and Amity's relationship, we then later get an issue showing how the two of them first met, and the exact timeframe of the issues between them or immediately after isn't clear.
• Badass Normal: Despite being human and legitimately old Eda can still smack monsters real good.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: It's implied that Luz started liking Amity because she defended her from Boscha and her posse.
• Butch Lesbian: Being a witch from the Boiling Isles, this version of Luz is more crass than her canon-counterpart and is in a relationship with Amity.
• The Cameo:
  • Hunter/The Golden Guard makes a cameo in "Return to Sender" in a video playing on Amity's phone fighting Luz in her superhero identity. Like Luz he appears to be older than in canon, is wearing Powered Armor and has a gun.
  • Edric and Emira also make a cameo appearance in the "Meet Eda" comic receiving a scam fortune telling from Eda.
• Damn You, Muscle Memory!: During baseball practice, Boscha throws a ball at Luz while she isn't looking, which causes Luz to use a wind spell to send it flying back at Boscha, putting a hole in the dugout wall.
  Luz: [tsssccchhh] I hate it when my reflexes kick in.
• Everyone Has Standards: While this Luz is a vigilante and a lot rougher than her canon self, she won't turn things into gold for Eda and screw with humanity's economy.
• Failed a Spot Check: Lilith tries to expose Luz as a witch by removing her hat to see her ears, but Luz has other hats on underneath it. After a while Lilith gives up, declaring that she will expose Luz eventually, completely missing the giant pile of hats behind her that is far larger than anything Luz could have worn on her own without magic.
• Fish Out of Water: Being a witch of the Boiling Isles, Luz is unaccustomed to certain realities in the Human World.
  • She calls coffee "bitter bean blood."
  • Luz shows a Grom heart (which is an actual organ) to Gus who is visibly unnerved by it.
  • When it starts raining, she clings to Amity, thinking it would melt the flesh off her bones if left out in it.
• Funny Background Event: After Luz changes into her costume in a port-a-potty at the zoo, Mary is shown next to it looking shocked when she emerges.
• Headphones Equal Isolation: When Amity has her earbuds in, she happily dances along to a pop song, completely oblivious to Luz having a magical battle with Grom just behind her.
• Heel–Race Turn: According to the Giraffe that Luz confronts, their species collectively abandoned soul-eating centuries ago.
• Inspector Javert: This version of Lilith is a cop hunting Luz down, seeing the witch as a threat.
• It's Not You, It's My Enemies: At one point, Luz interrupts what appears to be Amity confessing her feelings so she won't get caught up in her conflict with Lilith.
• Just Like Robin Hood: Having been born and raised as a wild witch, this version of Luz is a vigilante that undermined the governing bodies on the Boiling Isles. When she winds up in the human world, she becomes a full-on superhero.
• Laser-Guided Amnesia: Luz has no memory of exactly how she wound up in the Human World.
• Leaning on the Fourth Wall: "Confrontation" is something clearly written in response to the results of the 2024 election where the conservative Republican candidate Donald Trump won, and is meant as an act of defiance against whatever unpleasant actions the reigning president in either real life or fiction plan to implement.
• Lipstick Lesbian: Amity is fairly feminine and is in a relationship with Luz.
• Loves My Alter Ego: Amity is not among her list of secret keepers, Luz's secret identity (or in her case, her real identity) coming close to being blown to her girlfriend more than once. One comic panel hints this will eventually change with Amity learning about Luz's secret.
• Mage in Manhattan: Luz escaped the Boiling Isles in the human world. In fact, it looks like it takes place in Manhattan.
• Mugging the Monster: Or the witch in Boscha and co's case. Honestly, Amity threatening them with a recording is them getting off easy.
• Mythology Gag:
  • The designs of Luz, Amity, and a few others are based on their prototype designs.
  • In the Witches Among Humans intro, King wears a skull that resembles his canon counterpart's head.
  • During a trip to the zoo Luz confronts a giraffe, which in The Owl House are confirmed to be monsters banished from the Boiling Isles.
• Non-Standard Character Design: The giraffe Luz confronts is designed to be slightly more realistic than the rest of the cast, most likely to highlight how they're actually demons.
• Not So Above It All: Despite being a battle-hardened vigilante, Luz chooses to use the otter suit from the canon show as her backup costume when her main costume is still drying.
• Official Couple: Luz and Amity end up a couple at some point... presumably after she shot down Amity so she won't get caught up in her conflict with Lilith.
• Phony Psychic: This appears to be one of Eda's scams as she is shown doing a fortune telling for the Blight twins, despite explicitly having no supernatural powers.
• President Evil: Confrontation features Belos having managed to acquire the U.S. presidency, with him personally reviewing bills and sitting in the Oval Office chair. Luz however, refuses to stop fighting against him and declares that she intends to continue being a thorn in his side for the four years of his term. His response?
  Belos: (smirking) Sounds like fun.
• Role Swap AU: The entire setting of the webcomic is established as a complete inversion of its parent series. While The Owl House is about a human that stumbles in a demon-infested Magical Land, Witches Among Humans is about a witch (Luz) that gets lost in the human world. As revealed in the 2024 comic, this also means that the originally human-masquerading-as-a-witch Emperor Belos is here a witch masquerading as a human, and is the president of the United States of America.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here: During the 5/15/21 comic Luz is forced to use her otter outfit to disguise herself to fight the Bat Queen because Eda is washing her witch outfit, but because everyone (including said Bat Queen) laugh at her she immediately leaves. Presumably the Bat Queen laughed herself to a state of being a non-threat after that.
• Secret-Keeper: While canon!Luz is public knowledge, this version of Luz tries keeping her identity a secret (wearing a beanie to cover her ears in disguise, her hood used to mask her face while performing magic), with Eda, Willow, and Gus being the ones to keep her secret on-panel and a comic hints Amity set to learn it at some later point.
• Shout-Out:
  • The 1/21/2021 scene of Amity celebrating a date oblivious to the battle behind her is a self-admitted one to Sym-Bionic Titan and a similar scene in the show.
  • Before confronting the giraffe Luz rushes to a booth to change like something out of classic Superman.
  • As the Golden Guard, Hunter is referred to as an Iron Man ripoff once.
• Super Fic: Since magic is uncommon in the human world, Luz's antics in the human world are framed as a hero debut.
• Trapped in Another World: An inverted example; Luz is a witch from the Boiling Isles who was accidentally transported to Earth.
• The Unmasqued World: Downplayed. While humans don't have magic like in-canon, the reality that magic and witches are real is a given here, Eda recognizing Luz for what she is on-sight and Lilith claims that "Among Humans, there are good witches, and there are bad witches."
• You Can Talk?: Luz confronts a giraffe at the zoo, but when it claims to have given up eating people's souls Luz assures everyone present not to panic... and they panic anyway, weirded out by a talking giraffe.
