Sonic Boom Revisited

The webcomic continues where the titular series ended, with more serialised adventures, featuring Team Sonic, their arch nemesis Dr. Eggman, and the other residents of Seaside Island and Hedgehog Village.

The webcomic releases new “episodes” through comic issues of varying lengths that serve to form each Story Arc for the series. The ones listed so far are:

1.The Robo-fication Arc (Issues #1-#4)

Sonic Boom Revisited as a whole contains examples of:

• Continuation Fic: The comic series continues where the original cartoon left off. It also has some elements derived from the short-lived Sonic Boom comic series too.
• Darker and Edgier: Downplayed. While still keeping the comedic elements from the show, it's much less wacky and less prone to making jokes all the time. Instead, the comic provides more in-depth, serialized stories that the TV series largely avoided due to running on quasi-Negative Continuity.
• Fan Sequel: Sonic Boom Revisited serves as a fan project to foster new stories within the Sonic Boom canon, and seeks to create a framework for potentially exploring some of Boom’s unexplained elements, as well as connecting various aspects the franchise together.
• Medium Awareness: Shares the same self-referential humor the sub-franchise was famous for. Heck, the cover art of the very first issue has Sticks Breaking the Fourth Wall, and each new issue has a blurb In the Style of the original comics, where a character would give a brief plot summary.

The Robo-fication Arc provides examples of:

• And I Must Scream: Sonic’s roboticization leaves him fully aware of his surroundings but unable to act on his accord, and is forced to follow all of Eggman’s commands. It gets even worse after he’s put through the machine the second time around. With the Virus being reawakened, it then mentally chains up Sonic, in a bid to completely dominate his consciousness and take over his mind. Sonic himself later describes this experience as a “waking nightmare”. For bonus points, his second robotic form literally lacks a mouth.
• Bad Liar: Sonic is already terrible at lying to others and this trait is still notable in his new corrupted, robotic form.
  • In Issue 3, Robo-Sonic attempts to manipulate Amy into letting her guard down by making her think that she has helped him overcome Eggman’s control over him. Amy is able to see through him however when he still compliments Eggman’s technology and describes himself as “weak”, something she recognizes that the real Sonic would never do.
  • In Issue 4, when Team Sonic are preparing to install Tail’s Anti-Virus’ on an incapacitated Robo-Sonic, he tells them they are too late to save Sonic and that he has erased him from his core memory. Again, Amy calls him out and proceeds to attach the Electro Magnet onto him.
• Big Damn Heroes: After having been placed under mind control by Robo-Sonic, Tails shows up at the control room in Sonic's mindscape to help his best friend regain his body.
• Brainwashed and Crazy: Sonic, after being roboticized. Though there turns out to be more than Eggman’s mind control technology involved.
• Brick Joke: Issue 4 sees the return of Eggman’s Toaster in Sonic’s Mindscape
• Contagious A.I.: The Mech Suit Virus works in this manner, first injecting itself into Sonic’s brain when he initially put on the suit so that it would have a direct link to his mind, and has been steadily growing stronger with each “upgrade” of Robo-Sonic’s goes through. Tails even compares it to a “digital tumor”.
• Continuity Nod: Seeing as this is a fan-continuation of Sonic Boom, several elements from the sub-franchise appear in this comic, such as the mind control device from Shattered Crystal, and the mech suit from Mech Suits Me that apparently left a virus in Sonic's brain, which was the entire reason Sonic got roboticized in the first place.
• Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Sonic’s roboticisation leads to the The Mech Suit Virus to reactivate within him, which now seeks to manipulate and repress Sonic’s consciousness, with its ends goal being to completely override Sonic’s original personality entirely.
• Does This Remind You of Anything?: As confirmed by Word of God, The Mech Suit Virus, while certainly malignant, lacks a cohesive identity of its own. It can only copy the characteristics of its host, essentially repurposing their identity into its own corrupted version, without truly comprehending their true nature. This notably brings to mind the controversial use of A.I. in creative media, how people feed intel to a program and then get it to mimic human behavior to “create” art, writing, music, etc. reducing artistic expression to data points.
• Enemy Mine: Robo-Sonic betrays Eggman and places him under mind control, unwittingly allowing the doctor to enter Sonic’s mindscape. Once there, he frees Sonic from his chains, as well as wakes him up from his robotic stupor, and the two temporarily team up to put a stop to Robo-Sonic’s plan.
• Hoist by His Own Petard: Robo-Sonic’s use of the Mind Control Devices come back to bite him hard, as they end up giving both Eggman and Tails access to Sonic’s mindscape, with the former being able to free Sonic’s from his chains and the latter arriving in the nick of time to stop the Virus from erasing Sonic’s consciousness.
• "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: During their first skirmish with Robo-Sonic, Amy attempts to appeal to Sonic’s true nature, trying to help him override Eggman’s control over him. Unfortunately Knuckles chooses that moment to try to catch Robo-Sonic off guard.
• I Surrender, Suckers!: When cornered in by Eggman’s badniks under Robo-Sonic’s command Amy claims that the Team surrenders as a ruse to get close enough to Robo-Sonic so she can install Tail’s Anti-Virus Electro Magnet.
• Mythology Gag:
  • Robo-Sonic’s initial design bears a strong resemblance to Sonic’s Game Land Mod from Sonic Colors.
  • When Robo-Sonic is first revealed, Orbot exclaims that Sonic has been "roboticized", to which Cubot nervously questions if they can legally use that term.
  • Eggman at one point calls Robo-Sonic a Nincombot and after being betrayed by him, says that he “hates that hedgehog.”
  • Robo-Sonic's first appearance in Sonic's mind gives him beige arms, much like those of Modern Sonic. Granted, they eventually turn blue, but still.
  • The Mech Suit Virus’ desperate final attempt to override Sonic’s consciousness in Issue 4 by slowly merging with him appears similar to the Metal Virus.
• Shout-Out:
  • Upon discovering that Robo-Sonic can fly, this brief exchange occurs:
  Knuckles: He flies now?!
  Tails: He flies now!
• Signature Move: Discussed Trope. It’s eventually discovered that Robo-Sonic 2.0 is unable to perform Sonic’s Spin Dash because, as Tails points out to him, his new body parts are too rigid. Tails then proceeds to list off how his new form has in reality robbed Sonic of everything that is part of his identity. This does cause a pause in Robo-Sonic, which briefly allows the real Sonic to resurface.
• Turned Against Their Masters: Sticks warns Dr. Eggman about this and sure enough, when Tails manages to temporarily shut down Robo-Sonic with an Electro-Magnet, it causes Eggman’s programming over Robo-Sonic to be overridden by the virus. Once out of his control, Robo-Sonic wastes no time betraying his former boss.
• Unwilling Roboticisation: The SG-1000, Dr. Eggman’s latest invention, is a machine designed to repair and upgrade his appliances (in this case, his broken toaster). Sonic gets caught in the machine’s receptacle, and it’s discovered that it also has the ability infuse organic beings with Eggman’s technology. While this was unintentional on his part, Eggman is more than happy to take the opportunity to “upgrade” Sonic into a robot henchman.
  • Eggman later attempts to do the same to the rest of Team Sonic only to discover that the SG-1000 is unable to roboticize them because it cannot identify what needs to be “repaired” precisely cause they are organic. Meaning that Sonic had an anomaly in him that allowed the machine to bypass this and mechanize him anyway…
• Wrecked Weapon: After failing to trick Amy into thinking that she had gotten through to Sonic in Issue 3, Robo-Sonic proceeds to incapacitate Amy by destroying her hammer.
