My Deer Nanny
is a Radio-Apple human AU comic of Hazbin Hotel created by notherpuppetwhere Alastor, a down-on-his-luck serial killer trying to avoid detection, meets Charlie, the toddler daughter of Lucifer, a down-on-his-luck architect working on making downtown a nicer place. Overwhelmed with his project and raising his daughter alone, a desperate Lucifer hires Alastor on the spot to be a nanny for his daughter, who gladly takes the position for a safe place to lay low from his crimes. Now the pair have to manage living together and their burgeoning feeling for one another while raising a rambunctious Charlie.
Tropes:
- Adaptational Heroism: There is no indication that Carmilla Carmine, Zestial or Rosie are as evil as they are in canon, and in particular, no indication that Rosie is a cannibal.
- Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
- Lucifer and Alastor are reimagined as a boss and employee with Belligerent Sexual Tension as opposed to coworkers who hate each other.
- Alastor and Rosie are old friends in canon. Here, they don't meet until the Masquerade Ball, with Rosie instead being an old friend of Lucifer, though they hit it off right away.
- Adaptation Species Change: Everyone in the story is human instead of a demon or angel. Additionally, Razzle, Dazzle and Velvette's model Melissa are reimagined as toys (Razzle and Dazzle being plushies Charlie buys in one comic and Melissa being a fashion doll Velvette demands that Valentino buys for her).
- Affably Evil: Alastor, as always, is a polite, personable fellow for a serial killer.
- Age Lift:
- Charlie, Vaggie, Emily and Velvette are adults in canon. Here, they're all young children, Charlie being cared for by Lucifer and Alastor, Vaggie by Adam, Emily by Sera and Velvette by Vox and Valentino.
- Downplayed with Angel, who's in his twenties rather than his thirties like in canon.
- Husk's age range is stated to be 60-70 in canon. Here, he's much younger, apparently closer in age to Angel Dust.
- Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Alastor is dressed up like Santa (long story) and has to listen to what Vaggie wants for Christmas, she asks him for a spear that can "slice through anyone". Alastor declares internally that she's crazy... because spears are for piercing, not slicing.
- Back-Alley Doctor: Downplayed with Peter. He's implied to be a regular doctor, but in the "Buckshot" arc, he takes a $30,000 bribe from Lucifer to keep quiet about treating Alastor (since Alastor weakly demanded Lucifer not to tell the police).
- Blood-Splattered Innocents: A nontraumatic example. Charlie rolls around in a blood puddle because she loves puddles, covering herself in blood.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Velvette is small but demanding.
- Cheerful Child: Charlie is a cheerful, sweet child.
- Children Are Innocent:
- Charlie meets Alastor during a murder. Not only does she not realize what's going on, but she also rolls around in the blood puddle because red is her favorite color.
- Later, when she joins Alastor in collecting Husk and Angel's blood, she squees over the fact that the two had a "sleepover".
- Comical Overreacting: One panel has Lucifer kick Alastor out of the house for not liking sweets.
- Dirty Cop: Adam, the local sheriff, is implied to be one of these. At the very least, he's a cop who's also a Jerkass.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Played for Laughs. Alastor kicks a coffee pot at Valentino for throwing his drink in Al's face, and Valentino opens fire with his gun.
- Exact Words: When Lucifer hired Angel to be a babysitter while Alastor was incapacitated, it's revealed that Angel told him and Charlie that he's an "actor". While technically true, he didn't clarify that he's an adult film actor. Alastor is not pleased when he finds out.
- Giver of Lame Names: Adam is even more this than in canon, given that Vaggie in this version is both a human and a child.
- Good Wings, Evil Wings: Adam is seen carrying two rifles on his back in such a way that the stocks resemble spread wings - a reference to how he's an archangel in canon. While he isn't exactly evil in this continuity, he's still an antagonist and an asshole.
- Horrible Judge of Character: Lucifer completely unwittingly hired two people to watch Charlie under the impression they were perfectly legitimate babysitters.
- Alastor is an exceptional nanny who is very loving towards Charlie. He's also a serial killer, something Lucifer hasn't seemed to clock onto yet.
- Similarly, Angel is a wonderful babysitter and adores Charlie, and ensures she is never exposed to what he really does for his main job… he’s also an adult film star who prostitutes himself on the side,
Word of God saying he was hired when he propositioned Lucifer on a street corner and the latter mistook it as a legitimate offer for assistance.
- Hospital Hottie: Alastor dresses up as a nurse for Charlie's game of doctor. Lucifer is clearly into it.
- House Fire: Charlie sets the house on fire playing 'dragon'. Played for Laughs of course.
- Magical Nanny: Rare male example of the sensible variety. Alastor is a stabilizing presence in the Morningstar family and is more on the ball when it comes to taking care of Charlie and the household.
- Masquerade Ball: Lucifer invites Alastor to one being held by Carmine. Lucifer wants help socializing with clients, Alastor goes because a lot of targets are on the guest list.
- Mythology Gag: Charlie is shown to have a fondness for demons in the series, likely a nod to Charlie's desire to redeem sinners in canon.
- Noodle Incident: What exactly happened at the house while Lucifer and Alastor were at the masquerade ball is never stated onscreen. All that is known is that Sir Pentious and Cherri Bomb were involved, it resulted in a heart-shaped hole being blasted through the wall, and Sir Pentious left an apology note. Charlie does explain the incident to Alastor, but it's entirely offscreen so the readers never hear it.
- Parental Neglect: Adam is implied to do this — in the Christmas comic, he dumps Vaggie with the Morningstars without warning and drives off without saying goodbye, apparently so he can go "get his bells jingled". Additionally, this comic reveals that Vaggie calls him "sheriff" instead of "dad".
- Parents as People: Lucifer loves his daughter dearly, but it's clear that he's a little out of his element raising her, hence why he hires a nanny.
- Perpetual Smiler: As in canon, Alastor always smiles, even when he's angry or displeased. The only exception so far has been when he was knocked unconscious by his injury in "Buckshot".
- Platonic Co-Parenting: Lucifer brings on Alastor as a nanny for his young daughter Charlie, with both of them looking after her. Lucifer and Alastor's relationship evolves into a queerplatonic one — they live together, are dance partners, and share some forms of physical affection associated with romantic couples, such as kissing, but without being romantically or sexually involved.
- Post-Kiss Catatonia: Alastor can only stare straight ahead in silence after sharing a kiss with Lucifer at the end of "Let's Dance". Even as Lucifer panics and literally throws money at his face, he barely responds.
- Puppy Love: Charlie and Vaggie seem to be heading in this direction. Lucifer even calls their interactions "cute".
- Related in the Adaptation:
- Adam is Vaggie's adoptive father.
- Charlie and Emily are cousins, with the implication that this means Sera and Lucifer are siblings.
- Related Differently in the Adaptation: A justified example, as Season 2 wasn't out yet at the time the AU was made. Sera and Emily are revealed to be sisters (or at least view themselves as sisters) in Season 2 of the show, but here, Emily is Sera's daughter instead.
- Santa Claus: Alastor gets talked into dressing up as Santa for Charlie. Turns out, Charlie doesn't even believe in Santa Claus and Lucifer made Alastor do it as a joke. Vaggie, however, does believe in Santa, so when she shows up, Alastor has to keep up the charade.
- Serial Killer: Alastor, a secret he needs to keep from both his employer and his young charge.
- Sleeping with the Boss: Lucifer and Alastor are obviously attracted to each other, though they recognize why this would be a bad idea given their positions.
- Spoiled Sweet: Lucifer clearly has no ability to say no to Charlie, but she's still a sweet child and doesn't even mind when Alastor puts limits on how many toys she's allowed to get at the store.
- Sympathetic Magic: In order to make voodoo dolls, Alastor ropes Charlie into a game of doctor to take some blood from Husk and Angel Dust.
- Taking the Kids: Played for Laughs and a platonic example, but when Alastor found out that Lucifer gave the lighter to Charlie to play dragon, he packed his suitcase and took her with him, leaving Lucifer behind while the house was on fire.
- Too Dumb to Live: Lucifer gives Charlie a lighter so she can play dragon.
- Voodoo Doll: Alastor makes some dolls of Angel, Husk, Cherri, and Pentious as revenge for putting a hole in the wall.
- Wham Shot: Alastor and Lucifer kissing at the end of "Let's Dance".
