In 1980, the town from the United Kingdom, Bone Bridge has experienced a string of disappearances. Adults, children and pets are taken out of the streets during the dead of night by some mysterious figure who the townsfolk has dubbed the Bone Bridge Reaper.

While the local authorities and townsfolk try to make sense of the situation, another group has entered the town and are keeping everyone from looking deeper into the case.

The Cicada Codex contains the following tropes:

• Abandoned Area: Christopher's cousin heads to a district that has been abandoned and left in ruin, thinking Chris might be there. Too bad, the district has become a makeshift home for the Dilophosaurus.
• Artistic License – Paleontology: No evidence has been shown that Dilophosaurus would be able to mimic voices nor they take their prey to use them to build nests for their eggs.
• Big Brother Is Watching: Due to whatever connection Cicada Genetics has with Optidyne, the company can access any device to track anyone.
• Body Horror:
  • The failed cloned dinosaurs are not pleasant to look at due to their numerous deformities on them.
  • The poor Triceratops who got contracted with a deadly ancient disease has been paralyzed and their skin melted off and somehow they are still alive.
• Cassandra Truth: Harper had tried to warn her parents that she has encountered the Bone Bridge Reaper and that it tried to talk to her. Her parents dismissed her claims to be her imagination only to regret when Harper was taken.
• The Conspiracy: Much of the story's events are heavily tied to Cicada Genetics who are bringing back a vast menagerie of prehistoric creatures from extinction. They are also connected to Optidyne, an electronics company who implants tic chips into the devices which the company leads people to believe are to enhance visual and audio but in truth, they are meant to allow Cicada to spy on people.
• Content Warnings: Watchers are warned of the disturbing nature of the autopsy of Christopher Basu.
• Creepy Cave: The Dilophosaurus formally settled in a cave that was located between Bone Bridge and Cicada's facility before leaving once they realized that their creators are tracking them. It was also where Christopher and the other victims had been stored at.
• Everyone Has Standards: While Doctor Cole understands that the Dilophosaurus are expensive assets to Cicada, he feels it isn't worth the increasing civilians casualties caused by the dinosaurs hunting them.
• Feathered Fiend: The Coelophysis are portrayed to have brown proto-feathers.
• Foreshadowing: The first entry to the series "Child Taker" featured footage of a Lyre Bird then later, Harper Thompson explained that the Bone Bridger Reaper had tried to talk to her. Later episodes revealed that the Reaper(s)/Dilophosaurus have the ability to copy voices.
• Fossil Revival: Cicada Genetics first have the idea of bringing prehistoric animals to life after developing the technology advanced enough to detect viable genetic material. Then, the scientists replace the DNA gaps with that of the dinosaurs' bird descendants like the Lyre Bird, Blue Macaw and the Cassowary.
• Found Footage Films:
  • "Bone Bridge Reaper" has Christopher Basu carrying around a handheld recorder to try and find out who is behind the killings. Sadly, he meets a horrific end.
  • "Monster House" follows Christopher's cousin desperate to find Christopher only to encounter the Dilophosaurus. Thankfully, the cousin is able to escape the dinosaurs. The reason he carries a recorder is to honor Christopher.
• Fun with Acronyms: DARWIN stands for DNA Assembly and Reconstruction Workstation for Interpreting Nucleotides.
• Gory Discretion Shot: Chris drops the camera after being tackled down by the Dilophosaurus and conveniently, the camera is not at the direction for anyone to see a screaming Chris being killed by the Dilos.
• Introduced Species Calamity: The dinosaurs that break out of containment have done damage to the Bone Bridge's ecosystem, with Anurognathis being the most prominent as their ability to breed quickly makes them the most difficult to fully contain.
• It Can Think: The Dilophosaurus are dangerously intelligent; they not only are able to formulate traps but they are also aware that Cicada Labs is hunting them, leading them to move from location to location. As revealed by Doctor Cole, the Dilophosaurus have a nasty habit in prolonging their victims's suffering for...reasons.
• Killed Mid-Sentence: In "The Prologue", Harper Thompson walks up to a tunnel and is saying "Come on, this isn't fun-", then Dilophosaurus jumps out and bites on the poor child's head.
• Monster Is a Mommy: It turns out that the two Dilophosaurus are a mating pair and have built a nest and laid eggs. When the protagonist of "Monster House" unwittingly enters their territory, they, especially the mother, are trying to eliminate him to protect their young then giving up on hunting him once he finally leaves them.
• Neck Snap: Poor Christopher Basu had his neck snapped when the Dilophosaurus caught him.
• Oh, Crap!: Upon seeing a shadowy humanoid figure, Christopher's cousin says "Hello" to them. But when the figure responds with his own "Hello" in a garbled tone, the human immediately recoils in horror on who he is talking to.
• Prehistoric Monster: Downplayed. The Dilophosaurus pair have been terrorizing the townspeople but this is due to them requiring sustenance as the forest doesn't provide them enough prey items compared to a town full of live meals.
• Shout-Out:
  • The Lost World (1925) and Nosferatu are featured.
  • "Monster House" has a couple of nods to the Jurassic Park series; the dinosaurs being able to open doors is borrowed from the Velociraptors while the use of dead prey as makeshift nests is taken from the Troodon from Jurassic Park: The Game.
• Shown Their Work:
  • The Dilophosaurus of The Cicada Codex are portrayed to be in-line to the depictions of their real-life counterparts. Not only are the Dilophosaurus about the same size as a human but they also possess a strong bite force to kill their prey.
  • The autopsy in Christopher Basu reveals that the Dilophosaurus prioritize on eating the man's organs. Predators in real-life focuses on eating the organs of prey because they contain the most nutrients.
• The Virus: When Cicada Labs are resurrecting the Coelophysis, they unknowingly revive a pathogen called the Basillus Caraman Dukans. The side-effect vary between species; for humans, they suffer degradation of the skin barrier and development of dermoid cyst.
• Voice Changeling: The Dilophosaurus possess the ability to sample and imitate sounds, including human voices. It is heavily implied that it is a trait they've gained from lyre bird DNA put into them.
• Wham Shot: Christopher finds a torn page, implied to belong to Harper Thompson, depicting a drawing of her and two Bone Bridge Reapers. Cue the Reapers.
