Hey Tomar, what would you do if some weird internet goblin just ran up to you and started listing all these tropes in alphabetical order?

OneyPlays is a Let's Play YouTube channel created by Irish animator, cartoonist, voice actor and musician Chris "Oney" O'Neill (Leo and Satan, Hellbenders).

The channel started in 2012 as "Oney's Video Hole," Chris' alternate account for his various non-animation videos. The LP show itself began in May 2014 with a casual Dark Souls playthrough by Chris, but as he played other games and invited guests on, the channel became almost entirely for Let's Plays. The humor in every video is silly and sometimes (well, often) very, very morbid, which is signature of Chris' style.

Chris' most recurring guests were formerly his friends Ding Dong and Julian (of the game-development team Wan Wan Games) until 2017, when they took a hiatus and have returned sporadically since. Chris has now hosted a wide variety of friends as guests with no set cast. Many are former Newgrounds creators such as Zach Hadel (a.k.a. Psychicpebbles), Joshua Tomar, Cory Beck (a.k.a. Spazkid), or Dave Brown (a.k.a. PhantomArcade). Other guests have included fellow YouTube creators such as Lyle Rath (a.k.a. Lyle McDouchebag), Ryan and Matt of SuperMega, Arin Hanson of Game Grumps, or Jon of JonTron. Some are just Chris' real-life friends, such as Adam or Niall.

The channel occasionally hosts streams by Chris, as well as Slightly Artistic, a spiritual successor of the defunct Doodle Doods (from Game Grumps, also hosted by Chris), where Chris and other animators draw deranged cartoons of various forms of media.

• Aborted Arc:
  • Ding Dong mentioned on Twitter that Kingdom Hearts II, DKC 2, Pokémon Red, and the second Final Fantasy VII playthrough were all halted for various reasons. But he says they plan to return to those games. Kingdom Hearts II and Pokemon resumed after those tweets were posted, and Final Fantasy VII came back much later.
  • Many games are never finished simply because they decide to switch to a different game and either are more interested in that or forget the previous one. The only one they made a concerned effort to actually finish one-hundred-percent is Crash Bandicoot 2.
• AcCENT upon the Wrong SylLABle: Zach impersonates Chris in the second Left 4 Dead series, asking the viewers if they want to watch him play "Goat Simulay-TOR."
• Accidental Misnaming: During MarbleBlast Ultra when Chris gets frustrated at a particularly tricky level Julian tells him to pass the controller over to DingDong, but in a fit of hilarity calls him "DingDing" by mistake. Chris plays along with it and hands the controller over while making a funny voice.
• Adolf Hitlarious: Hitler is a semi-reoccurring joke among the Boys, most infamously the "tiny Hitler clone" debate on whether it would be ethical or not to torture a six-inch tall perfect clone that has his memories from the Kingdom Hearts I playthrough. There's also a ''Worms Armageddon" map that is entirely made of bug-eyed Hitler heads that proceed to get a ton of holes blown into them.
• Aerith and Bob: During their Worms Reloaded games, most of Chris' worms have strange names like Jubberdunkus, aside from one worm named Doug, after Doug Walker from The Nostalgia Critic.
• Alter Kocker: Comes up a few times on the channel, mostly whenever the boys need to do an "old man" voice. The most prominent example however, is a character Chris improvs called Uncle Sherman, who sings about a desire to protect his niece/nephew "from the Israelites!" After being informed by Julian that Uncle Sherman most likely would be an Israelite, rather than change the character's motivation Chris doubles down by turning him into a self-loathing anti-Semite.
  Uncle Sherman: I hate our race.
• Always a Live Transmission: During Part 15 of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Chris gives Cory a hypothetical about being in the start of the zombie apocalypse. When Cory says that he would watch Atop the Fourth Wall instead of caring about the warnings, Chris says that he sees Linkara being ripped apart by zombies. Although Chris says afterwards that it's a special live episode of the show.
• Anti-Climax: Their YIIK series abruptly ends right as the final boss gets one-shotted with an overpowered LP Toss. The audience has waited for their reaction to the ending for over a year as of 2023.
• April Fools' Day: Averted with the series of Ouya games. It started on April 1st, but that wasn't mentioned in the videos, and it continued as a regular series.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Played for laughs. Chris states that guitarist Herman Li from DragonForce decapitated his wife with a guitar string, and Lyle retorts that they shot that video and later sped it up (which is a common criticism against Dragonforce's speedy music and guitar solos); that is, notwithstanding the murder accusation...
• Attack! Attack... Retreat! Retreat!: In a secret level of Donkey Kong Country 2, Chris announces he'll beat the level in one go and forges ahead. Then he runs into an oncoming obstacle and runs away into an enemy porcupine.
• Big "SHUT UP!": Chris delivers this to Julian in episode 4 of Pokémon Red when he starts singing the "Follow Me!" theme a little too loudly.
  Chris: Shut up, Julian it already ended!
  Julian: *Humming the theme even louder*
  Chris: Shut up!
  Chris: (With echo reverb) SHUT UP!!
• Blatant Lies:
  • The second Super Mario 64 series uses a mod that changes Mario's soundbites, but Ding Dong insists they're playing the game normally.
  • In the first episode of OneyPlays' Second Life, Chris runs into a guy who calls himself "Genesis." He makes rather outlandish claims like he played and beat Shadow the Hedgehog's supposed secret difficulty dubbed "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye," while also playing said supposed secret difficulty without taking damage^note There is no secret difficulty dubbed "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye." You can unlock the Expert difficulty by completing all levels with an A-Rank but that's it.. When Chris tells him to show him proof, "Genesis" tells him that he has a picture of him beating the secret difficulty on his phone, which was conveniently dead at that moment. Unlike the example above which was just Ding Dong's brand of humor, this was most likely a genuine example of this trope. Especially when you consider the fact that he said he never beat Shadow the Hedgehog to another person.
    • On a related note, he said he has a sword on Second Life that can "fry one's computer" that he somehow bought from their official store. When asked why the Second Life store would sell a weapon that would literally destroy ones computer, Genesis Valentine attempted to Hand Wave this by saying "They didn't know they made their sword that strong," which inadvertently raises more questions.
• Bloody Hilarious: Blood-splatter effects are sometimes included in videos as a joke.
• The Cameo: Danny accidentally interrupts the Sonic Adventure 2 playthrough because he left his shoes in the recording room. Besides the subtitles, he only has two lines heard, one saying "hi" and the other apologizing for the interruption.
• Caption Humor: Through Youtube, certain videos have full subtitles created by viewers. They're in line with the channel's humor.
  "INTRO SONG YAY"
  "Ding Dong: Congratulations. You won ._."
• Censored for Comedy: Done on a few occasions to make it seem like they're saying something much worse than what they're actually saying.
  • When encountering a Froggit in Undertale, Chris and Adam start very aggressively shouting its name back and forth, each instance of it censored.
  Tomar: Please censor all those!
  Chris: Thank you. Put a pixelled picture of Tomar on screen.
  Tomar: Complement the F(DK grunt)git?
  Chris: Beep out when Tomar says it too.
  Tomar: No, I just said F(DK grunt)git.
  Chris: Beep it out again.
  • In Biomutant, Chris calls Lyle a nitpicker, which gets censored.
  Chris: Lyle...you are a ni(DK grunt)ker.
  Lyle: I- Oh, you can't say that on the internet! (Laughs) Bleep that out!
  Tomar: You can't say that?
  Chris: Oh, you are gonna bleep it out and make it look like I'm saying-
  Lyle: It's gonna sound so much worse! (Him and Tomar Laugh)
  Chris: You're an asshole! Ni(DK grunt)ker! Don't do it again!
  Tomar: (Laughing) He bleeps it again!
  Chris: Nit! ...Picker!
• Don't Explain the Joke: In full effect during Super Mario 64. See Blatant Lies above.
• Dropped a Bridge on Him: After the accidental introduction of a character named Horizon derails an AI Dungeon session, Tomar simply has her explode so the Boys can get things back on track. The sudden nature of her death is even commented on by the AI itself.
  "You blast Horizon into nothingness. Her body disintegrates into dust. You feel a little sad about it, but quickly forget about it."
• Early-Installment Weirdness: Their playthrough of Jumping Flash! has the first instance of Chris referencing pouring a boiling substance onto someone else. However, rather than the more popular boiling milk on someone's head, Chris mentions a hypothetical where Homer Simpson pours boiling oil onto Bart's exposed skull.
  Chris (as Homer): Skull begin white. End black.
• Expy: In "Oney Plays itch.io Games PART 1," Zach, Chris, and Lyle imagine a new Batman villain. One of the three pretends to be "Mr. Hansel," a villain themed after Hansel and Gretel who leaves breadcrumbs to give Batman clues about his crimes. Although this motif is similar to another Batman villain, The Riddler, the voice that they give Mr. Hansel is similar to The Dark Knight's version of the Joker. In this animated version by Fax Jam, Mr. Hansel is drawn to resemble the Joker in the comics, albeit with light green skin, a green suit, and pink hair.
  Batman: You sound like the Joker.
  Mr. Hansel: No, I'm a different guy.
  Batman: YOU SOUND LIKE THE JOKER!
  Mr. Hansel: I do something DIFFERENT! Shut up!
• Eye Scream: The thumbnail art for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets has Harry's scar exaggerated to such a degree that it's embedded over his eye.
• Faux Horrific: In the playthrough of Super Mario 64, they jokingly propose a creepypasta called "Mario Says the Fuck Word", which facetiously treats a boy's shock at hearing Mario swear while playing the game as a traumatic thing to experience.
• Foreshadowing: In the title cards for Wild Woody, Ding Dong is screaming. At the end of the last video, he does scream, because Chris erased all their progress by mistake.
• Four-Temperament Ensemble: Chris and Lyle are Sanguine, Ding Dong and Mick are Melancholic, Julian and Tomar are Phlegmatic, Zach and Cory are Choleric.
• Gainax Ending: Flanders Killer 7 ends with the screen zooming in and shaking, while the first note of the Simpsons theme plays.
• Gaslighting:
  • The hosts regularly mess with each other this way, the most notable occurrence being when Chris and Lyle convinced Zach of the existence of a character in Hercules (1997) named Herculad, a miniature clone of Hercules, despite Zach having watched Hercules himself.
  • Albeit Zach has become wary of Chris due to Herculad, both Lyle and Tomar are also prone to falling to Chris' tall tales.
  • Matt discusses a hypothetical about wanting to wear a fedora around the Game Grumps office, wait for someone to make fun of it, then pretend to be upset about it so Arin falsely reprimands whoever teased him. Chris sums it up succinctly.
  Chris: *Laughs* Wow, you're an asshole.
• A God Am I: Homer Simpson develops a god complex after cloning himself - or at least his clone does.
  Marge: Homer, you've violated international law by cloning yourself. This is a big deal.
  Homer 2: In the eyes of the law, yes, I have violated - I have committed a great crime. But in the eyes of God, I am amongst him. I am a god myself in some ways.
  Marge: Homey, that sounds like cult leader talk.
  Homer 2: Yes. Yes, it does, doesn't it?
  Homer 1: Maybe you should join me on Institute.
• Green-Skinned Space Babe: Uranium Girl, who is really Pocahontas. Since the faulty capture makes her look green, they pretend she's an alien on another planet.
• Good Angel, Bad Angel: Taken almost literally in American Truck Simulator. Chris doesn't know how to drive; Julian attempts to keep Chris in line and prevent him from losing money, while Ding Dong keeps trying to cause chaos. Later on, Ding Dong starts getting a little devil icon - the Rabbid ears are replaced with devil horns - pops on-screen whenever he suggests Chris do something that will cause a violation.
• Halfway Plot Switch: In the middle of the Uranium Girl video (which was Disney's Pocahontas Genesis game with a broken capture), they start playing The Great Waldo Search instead.
• #HashtagForLaughs: In Dead Rising, The boys declare November 28th to be #NationalPuhskintiDay. You celebrate it by sharing pictures of yourself eating spaghetti while squinting.
• Hello, [Insert Name Here]:
  • Clitoria. Later with Ding Dong and Julian: mohawldi.
  • Broriqe, Pokomon, Garysmod, Lil Stank and Scrimbim.
  • From the second Final Fantasy VII playthrough: Bimblor, Lambini, Beeforoni, and Pastilda8.
  • Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back save files include "Bohij" and "Poji."
• The Hero Dies: The first run on Lord of the Rings DOS has Chris picking Sam and proceeding to kill Frodo and Pippin and take the One Ring. They then get Sam killed by the Black Riders.
• Horrible Housing:
  • The Nostalgia Critic, Linkara, and Spoony live in two different, absolutely hellish houses over the course of both Sims videos: the first is incredibly cramped and tiny with barely any furniture and surrounded by artificial mountains, and the second is a horrendously long and narrow maze full of industrial fans and nasty-looking green carpeting. Unsurprisingly, life in both homes is hilariously miserable for them.
  • Chris, Zach, and Cory will occasionally mention the townhouse they shared with some other residents (some of them fellow Youtubers) and the absolutely horrid things that went on there. Two of the most oft-mentioned incidents is that someone^note Either Niall or the girlfriend of another resident, depending on who you ask managed to get the internet to the house cut off because they tried to pirate Saving Mr. Banks, and that a box of Cheerios was left open for so long that it caused a moth infestation, which flocked to a lamp in Cory's room.
  • Lyle has talked about some horrible living arrangements he's had, which includes a converted garage that was infested with rats and renting a house from a landlord with an alcoholic ex-wife who was evicted via a court order and would come to the building to yell drunken death threats at her ex-husband through the window as well as Lyle himself to the point he got a restraining order against her.
• Hypocritical Humor:
  • Chris loves to make playful jabs at Let's Players like Markiplier really hamming it up with their over-the-top reactions to getting scared in horror games. This does not stop him and the rest of the boys from freaking the hell out when they're scared in horror games that they play, which he's acknowledged with an official compilation of such moments.
  • During their first playthrough of Witch Hunt (2018), Zach and Chris joke about wanting to see a tiny hamster dancing on a stump, only to quickly change gears and claim that it's a stupid idea that would ruin the game's dark atmosphere. Later, they're suddenly brainstorming ideas to make the game funnier, such as a flute that can make the game's giant spiders dance when you play it.
• Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: The first Banjo-Kazooie episode is named "Bobalafulla," and each additional episode adds an extra "a" to the end.
• Inherently Funny Words: The word "puskinteo" gets brought up regularly.
  • Also, the word "funny" is itself this to Chris. In fact, Chris mentions in their playthough of Crash Bandicoot 2 that he considered making an animated series on youtube called "The Funnies".
  • "Stinky" In relation to the above, Chris also wanted to create a character called "Stanko the Clown". He didn't know whether to make Stanko the Clown or The Funnies, so he decided to compromise and have Stanko the Clown be a hypothetical recurring character on The Funnies.
  • "Scary" A Running Gag on the channel is to call seemingly innocuous things scary, sometimes pronounced as "scawwy".
• Interrupting Meme: Sometimes when Cory goes off on another Hot-Blooded rant about something, Chris and Zach interject with (usually poor) impersonations of Sonic the Hedgehog characters, or ones related or not-so-related to the game at hand.
  Zach: Hello Cory, Ronald Reagan here-
  Cory: GET THE FUCK OUT!
• Joke and Receive:
  • During their playthrough of YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG, there is a part where, after Vella has a heart-to-heart conversation with Alex, the player is given an option to kiss her. Chris, Dong-Dong, and Julian make jokes about kissing Rory, a male party member, when he has a conversation with Alex not too long later. To their complete surprise, at the end of the cutscene, the game actually gives them this option, which they graciously accept.
  • This happens multiple times while playing Forspoken, thanks to the game's hilariously predictable dialogue and writing. At one point even Zach is reduced to shouting at the game in sheer outrage after their predictions are right time and time again.
    Lyle (as Frey's apartment is burning down): "Look for Homer [Frey's cat], leave the money!"
    Chris: Just pick up the fucking ba- she's gonna say "I have to find Homer first!" (tries to pick up bag of money)
    Frey: Gotta find Homer first!
    Zach: Whauoughh!?
• Kaizo Trap: After beating Tiny in Crash 2, Chris jumps in the air - and Crash's victory animation causes him to fall into the Bottomless Pit below.
• Last-Second Word Swap: Chris, DingDong and Julian play with this during Pokemon Red when discussing how someone would get around their accidental N-Word Privileges.
  DingDong: Hello my-AH!! - That's how you would stop yourself!
  Chris: Hello my nnNOOOO!
  DingDong: My nnnNNNICE FRIEND!!
  Chris: Get outta here you fuckin' nnnnNIMROD!
• Let's See YOU Do Better!: Chris challenges Ding Dong to play during Pokemon Red when he knocks out a Nidoran Ding Dong wanted to catch.
• Loads and Loads of Loading: The first Shenmue video is built around this, as the gang makes jokes while trying to get the game to start.
• Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: If the "Have a boy" gag sounds like it came out of nowhere, that's because it did; Julian, previously asleep during a recording session, woke up and said it randomly. Although much of the boys' humor is around the same level of Word Salad.
• Mighty Roar: While playing Rat Simulator, Chris, Zach, and Tomar all jokingly treat the bizarre little game as a legit horror game with scary music edited in, only to be scared for real when a dog startles them with an overly loud bark. Minutes later, they joke about the dog and its "Ninety Decibel Bark."
• Moving the Goalposts:
  • At the end of Rugrats: Studio Tour, just as Chris has collected the nine keys required to open the door and rescue Dil, they discover that they have to unlock another door with twenty-five keyholes, only one of which lets you proceed. They stop playing right there.
  • During his Kingdom Hearts I playthrough, Chris asks Julian, Ding Dong and Matt if they would torture a clone of Osama bin Laden for the real terrorist leader's crimes. They say no, since the clone never killed anyone. Chris proceeds to add more details and makes it clear that he isn't taking no for an answer, leading to a massive argument, during which at some point, the clone went from being one of bin Laden to Adolf Hitler. The debate resumes during the Banjo Kazooie playthrough. There, Chris asks Matt if he would be mad if he screwed a clone of his girlfriend. Matt doesn't care. After Chris continues adding details, until Matt's hypothetical girlfriend is dead and only Chris's perfect clone exists, a frustrated Matt admits that he'd be insulted, which Chris considers an acceptable answer.
• Naked People Are Funny: The thumbnails and most fan art depict Chris and Julian as naked, while Ding Dong just wears a shirt. This also applies to the rest of the cast as well, with only Tomar wearing a cap.
• Nerdy Nasalness: Chris and Lyle's Linkara impression combines this with a pronounced lisp, making it one of their more amusing impressions of Channel Awesome alumni.
• Nightmare Face: Three of the stingers to the Crash 2 episodes have these.
  • Parodied with the opening art to ''Creepy Pasta Land 2." The gang all have typical Creepypasta visual designs, but Chris' close-up face and the others' borderline-confused expressions turn it into Nightmare Retardant.
• No Ending:
  • The end to The Polar Express is just a film clip they can't show, so they're taken back to the menu.
  • Their playthrough of YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG ends on episode 41, with an LP Toss that one-shots the statues in the Final Boss fight. While there was a proper finale planned for this series, it unfortunately got scrapped at some point in development (see Trivia page for more info) so the playthrough as it stands just ends with the One-Hit Kill and an immediate cut to black.
• Non-Indicative Name: Ding Dong wonders if Flanders Killer 7 is a Simpsons-themed copy of Killer7. It's just a shooting gallery with the show's characters instead.
• Non Sequitur, *Thud*: At the start of one Crash 2 episode, a sleep-deprived Julian says "have a boy" for no reason. Chris adopts it as the channel's slogan.
• N-Word Privileges: Chris says the word "faggot" a lot around Ding Dong and Julian... who are gay. They seem to give him a pass, merely teasing him for using it so often in their presence (the word is often bleeped out with Donkey Kong's voice from Super Smash Bros. Melee in the later episodes).
• Once an Episode: Expect at least one of these at least once in most series:
  • A shouting match between Chris and Ding Dong over something trivial. Lately becoming parodied by Chris who comes up with poor ideas for debates where there's really no disagreement between the main three.
  • With increasing prevalence, a reference to 9/11 if someone crashes into a tower.
  • Chris typically making a seemingly-insensitive joke within the first minute of so.
  • If it's not part of "Boney Plays," Julian will probably say "Happy Halloween, everybody, we're playing ______".
• Once Done, Never Forgotten: Parodied; the group, especially Zach, has a tendency to refer to things someone has only done one time, often extremely minor, as being "iconic" to the character in question.
• Orphaned Series: Their playthrough of Cuphead ended prematurely due to the footage becoming corrupted not long after the first episode was posted. Ding Dong stated in the comments of the first part the game may be revisited if there is enough interest, but when or if that will happen is uncertain.
• Pet-Peeve Trope: They love making fun of the Not Afraid of You Anymore trope, especially if a character in whatever they're playing says it word-for-word.
• Random Events Plot: The boys create one at the end of Christmas NiGHTS by playing through the sound test.
• Rhymes on a Dime: Starting in Wild Woody, the gang would create hypothetical situations with rhyming prompts (e.g., "would you rather have a nice tan, or talk to a man?") Ding Dong eventually got tired of how often fans would repeat them.
• Rule of Funny: Zach's justification for why the image of the Mattress Brothers (An old man and his son who shot a man dead in an altercation involving a mattress) on one of his Worms custom maps was so blurry: it was funnier that way. He gave a similar justification for why he stretched out an image of the Nintendo Shitcube guy and made him look even fatter, but there was also a practical justification behind it (patching up a bottomless pit).
• Running Gag: Plenty.
  • Discussing Fat Albert and The Simpsons, with impersonations of characters from those shows. Also King of the Hill, Rugrats, The Nostalgia Critic, Linkara, and Family Guy to a lesser extent.
  • Chris talking about pouring boiling milk on someone's head.
  • Variations on the phrase, "What if a man ran in and funny scream?" One of the more popular variations which is a Running Gag in itself is Zach directing his question at Tomar, often with context meant to imply the latter being a psychopath of some sort, as mentioned below.
  • "Brown bricks," sometimes said in a nasally voice (from Mike Matei's ridiculed "Minecraft with Gadget" video).
    • Brown bricks. In Minecrap. In real life.
  • Saying the "kiwi!" sound effect from Jumping Flash, and including the character's game model in the video.
  • "You can take a shortcut!" from Rocket Power, while screeching the word "shortcut."
  • "Have a boy."
  • Julian's Furry side has become something of a running gag, which he tries to avoid. And fails. Also, that he wears a diaper.
  • Crash Bandicoot is mentioned outside of it's series more than any other game, to the point they've actually had to stop themselves and wonder why they're talking about Crash Bandicoot while playing a completely different game.
  • 9/11 comes up often if they're ever playing a game with large buildings.
  • "I know people who died in that shit!" Spinning off of 9/11 jokes, originally quoted from a viral video of an improv actor freaking out over someone calling him "9/11 beard". The guys will often shout this either when 9/11 is mentioned, or more generally, whenever someone is mentintioned to know someone who died.
  • In nearly every episode, one of the three will ask an either completely absurd or mundane hypothetical question from one of the other two.
  • Chris singing to the tune of "What's this?" from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
  • "Did you say the n-word?"
  • If a character is running down a corridor towards the camera, expect the chase level music from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back to play.
  • "Hey look, it's you, Tomar!" followed by Chris pointing out a character in the game who usually looks absolutely nothing like him.
  • Imitating Tomar's particular vocal inflection, portraying him as a hyper-violent psycho, and coming up with hilariously awful scenarios for him and his wife Jaxxy (as they're purportedly Sickeningly Sweethearts).
  • Talking about prolapses, usually via talking about cutting them off with "big hedge clippers".
  • Zach yelling "I'm not afraid anymore!" like a little kid when they're playing horror games.
  • Zach giving male characters the most impish, infantile and unflattering voice-over he can muster.
  • Chris pronouncing scimitar as "schmitmar"
  • Zach referring to things as "iconic" or "classic"
  • The Mattress Brothers^note  An old redneck and his son who got in an altercation with a neighbor of theirs with anger problems and a pre-existing rap sheet over a dirty mattress that ended with the two shooting the man dead after attempting to charge them with a baseball bat occasionally gets referenced by Chris, usually quoting the old man’s attempt at de-escalation/taunting by saying "Take yer swing".
  • Trumpet Guy^note  A memetic clip of a fairly short and ugly man with a high-pitched voice yelling at a trumpet player, claiming he’s more important than the trumpet player ever will be with bizarre claims like walking Bob Dylan up onstage in 1975 gets referenced occasionally, such as impersonations that sound vaguely like him devolving into quoting him.
  • Whenever the subject of rats crops up around Lyle, he will always mention his time in a glorified garage with a horrible rat infestation, as well as the time he managed to kill one by whipping it with his belt and crushing its head in the process.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
  • The end of Rugrats: Studio Tour, when the gang finds out there's another door they have to collect keys for after opening the first one.
    Ding Dong: Uh, hey game developers...
    Chris: Fuck you.
    Ding Dong: ...nice try!
  • Chris, Zach and Tomar get so tired of the repetitiveness of Marvel's Avengers that they get rid of it and start playing The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction instead. They ended up enjoying it much more
• Seinfeldian Conversation: A staple of Oneyplays humor is one of the boys, usually Chris or Zach, kicking off some kind of hilariously bizarre or horrifying conversation that's usually only barely related to the game they're playing at best.
• Shout-Out:
  • One of the stingers for Crash Bandicoot 2 is Crash screaming after falling through a bonus round platform through the bottom of the world. The clip of the bottom of the world and the screaming are taken from Klayman's death falling through a hole in The Neverhood.
  • While the title of the video Oney Plays Bloodborne WITH FRIENDS - EP 16 - LGR already has a Shout-Out to Lazy Game Reviews, the channel gets a direct recommendation from Ding Dong and Julian at the end of the video itself.
• Something Only They Would Say: In the midst of brainstorming "the funniest things you can do", which apparently involves breaking into your girlfriend's house in full prosthetics and threatening her with a knife:
  Chris: Make sure to say, (demonic voice) "I'm going to circumcise you! I'm going to circumcise you with this machetay!"
  Tomar: If someone threatened me, but then said "machetay"... or "spaghettie", I would know it was you guys, immediately.
  Chris: "Ah, it's time to circumcise this woman with a machetay. With my schmitmar."
• Sound-Effect Bleep: Any swears early in the video or slurs are often censored this way, most commonly using Donkey Kong sound effects from Super Smash Bros. Melee.
• Soundtrack Dissonance: The DOS Lord of the Rings playthrough features descriptions of the hobbits' skulls getting cleaved set to the soothing tune of an 8-bit cover of "Concerning Hobbits".
• Special Edition Title: "Boney Plays" for the Halloween season, centered on games with Halloween or horror themes.
  • "Oney Sleighs" for the Christmas season of 2016, centered on games with Christmas or winter themes.
• The Stinger: Every recent video includes one last joke at the end, usually based on something that happened in the video.
• The Stoic: Ding Dong isn't as prone to laughing as Julian or Suddenly Shouting like Chris is. He has his moments of both, though, and fully makes up for it by being a Deadpan Snarker.
• Straight Gay: Ding Dong and Julian are both gay, but aren't stereotypical in the slightest. It's a more obvious with Julian, since he makes repeat mentions of being into big buff guys and ten foot long dicks, as well as his crush on Tiny Tiger.
• Stuff Blowing Up: Happens a couple times during the Pokémon Red playthrough. The first time occurs when Chris is healing his team and the machine at the Pokémon Center is edited to explode. The second time happens after their victory over Blaine at the 7th gym where Chris jokes about how "the Volcano Badge explodes at random," then right on cue Red's sprite explodes right before the episode hard cuts to the end.
• Suddenly Shouting: Chris and Ding Dong are prone to this. Especially Chris.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial: During their Yooka-Laylee playthrough, Julian mentions a time where he briefly wore a fursuit, and when asked how he went to the bathroom he made a flippant joke about wearing a diaper. Not even a second later he freaks out and clarifies multiple times that he was just kidding, and keeps flipping out about it when Chris jokes about it in later videos. He and Ding Dong even acknowledge this trope, and tell Julian that he's not helping his case by constantly bringing up the diaper thing and losing his cool over it.
• Take That!:
  • Family Guy is an extremely common target for mockery by the boys due to the bad animation, lazy plots, repetitive jokes, and occasional cringe-worthy attempts to be "deep." Zach Hadel in interviews has actually cited it as an example of the kind of show he wanted to avoid making when he went into television himself.
  • Funko Pops are well hated amongst the hosts, often using them as Noodle Implements in hypotheticals. Zach in particular mentions that if Smiling Friends ever did end up getting Funko Pops made of it he wants fans to send him videos of the figured being smashed with hammers.
  • The The Lion King series where Chris' (at the time) girlfriend Veronica gets pretty far in the infamously difficult game without cheat codes could be a stealth 'Take that!' to the Game Grumps playthrough of the same game. Where Arin Hanson click baited the video by saying his wife Suzy Berhow was a master of the game only for her to immediately input an invincibility cheat code and say she'd never beaten the game without it.
  • "Spirit Science" gets the piss taken out of it occasionally by the hosts, lampooning the stranger beliefs like the guy’s obsession with Emma Watson and the Space Jews.
• That Reminds Me of a Song:
  • During the Kingdom Hearts series, Chris is prompted to sing parodies of "What a Wonderful World" and "Under the Sea."
  • In Yooka-Laylee, a comment made by Julian prompts Chris to sing "Through the Fire and Flames."
  • Julian starts singing "The Gospel Truth" during the opening cutscene of Dark Souls after Gwyn throws his lightning bolt. It quickly devolves to a parody.
• Theme Naming: During their Worms playthroughs, Tomar's worms all have names that rhyme with Tomar. These include, Chromar, Lowmar, You's a Homar and Malignant Melanomar.
  • During Worms Armageddon, Zach names half of his worms after failed US presidential candidates, including Alf Landon, who lost against Franklin D. Roosevelt in a landslide in the 1936 presidential election.
• Title Scream: DINGDONG!!! plays (with friends)!
• Toilet Humor: Many of the cast dabble in this humor, the most frequent offenders being Chris and Zach.
• Unfortunate Names:
  • If there's ever an option to rename the character, expect them to come up with the most ridiculous ones possible. For their Final Fantasy VII playthrough, Cloud becomes Bimblor, Barret becomes Lambini, Tifa becomes Beeforoni, and Aerith becomes Pastilda.
  • They discuss why it's so funny in part 3 of Super Mario 64.
    Julian: Why are fake names the funniest thing?
    Chris: Because you imagine the life they would live.
    Julian: (Laughs)
    Ding Dong: Tommy Trousers.
  • Some of the Worms in the Worms gameplay sessions definitely count, like Convicted Felon, Fart Tangler and Lil' Epstein.
• Unintentionally Unwinnable: An Ouya game they try playing called Pinball Arcade has an opening prompt saying "Press to Start." Except it doesn't say which button to press, and none of the buttons on the controller work.
• Visual Pun: The thumbnail for the Inspector Gadget video features Gadget holding a brown brick.
• Voice of the Legion: Done for the "with friends!" parts of the "Boney Plays" videos.
• Waxing Lyrical:
  • Julian says he mentally follows any instance of "back to the past" with "to play the shitty games that suck ass." Ding Dong used to do it by following "it was all a dream" with "I used to read Word Up! magazine," from the song "Juicy."
  • By the same merit, every instance of "that's very funny," is almost always followed up immediately with "A fly marrying a bumble bee!"
  • For a non-music example, all three of them used to instantly follow up the words "brown" or "bricks" by doing an impression of the "brown bricks from Minecrap" meme. It got so bad they had to start reminding each other to stop saying it so much.
• Whispering Ghosts: This trope is made fun of whether it's actually used in a game they're playing or if they feel like riffing on it in a horror game (usually) just because, rapidly whispering nonsense or relaying hidden messages until the whispers stop in-game or they just move on.
• Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Discussed during Resident Evil 4. Chris says he would name his son Puskinteo Bohij O'Neill, and Julian brings up Robert Rodriguez's sons Rebel, Rocket and Racer. Ding Dong also mentions Kanye West's daughter North.
