Naked And Afraid SMP

Go To

The Naked And Afraid SMP, also known as the No Armor Hardcore SMP, is a hardcore Minecraft survival series started by Loony. It features YouTubers such as wunba, NotNotBrock, Mogswamp, MiniMukaMC, SB737, Yeah_Jaron, and rekrap2.

Each server member only has one life, and once they lose their life they are out of the series. Additionally, they must adhere to a strict set of rules including wearing absolutely no armor (as armor damages the wearer), using no F3 coordinates to locate where they are, no in-game chat, and being unable to communicate with other players outside of recording sessions to avoid spoiling each other about any in-game deaths.

Season 1 included 9 players and three of them ultimately survived the events of the SMP.

Season 2 expanded the cast to 20 players, including legundos, Taneesha, ashswag, squiddo, and Branzy. Season 2 added additional features such as being being able to know if a player died if they heard a cannon shot, but they would not necessarily know who died unless they either witnessed the death themselves and/or were informed by other players. Additionally, all players were initially split into two teams of ten players (the Red Team and the Blue Team), and teammates had to work together to maintain surviving in the SMP. This lasted until the end of Episode 4, where the surviving members so far would unite as one larger team for the rest of the series to take on even tougher challenges.

The Naked And Afraid SMP in general provides examples of:

  • Aerith and Bob: Because players are generally referred to with their online alias or a nickname of it, names range from common real-life names such as Brock, Jaron, and Ash, to names such as 4CVIT, Clown, Squiddo, and Crafty. Rekrap can fall into both categories of names as his username is his real name, Parker, backwards, and some players use his real name.
  • Anyone Can Die: By virtue of its premise, every player on the server is liable to die, no matter how sudden.
  • Death Game: The series is a death game, where the players try to survive for 8 episodes while completing various dangerous tasks such as defeating the game's bosses. In Season 2, it is directly referred to as a game within books written by The Game Master to give the players information.
  • Deadly Prank:
    • In Episode 6 of Season 2, Clown and Wunba dig a hole a few blocks down in the middle of the staircase that the other players are walking up. They intend for it to only be a few-block fall that would deal no damage to scare a player running up the stairs, but they fail to notice that the hole they dug would actually drop the victim further down into a large cave filled with monsters. Ashswag falls into the hole soon after and is reduced to half a heart from a combination of the fall damage and the monsters' attacks. When the other players realize that Ashswag is in danger, they follow him into the cave to help kill and distract the monsters, including Clown and Wunba who express regret over their prank. Ashswag manages to escape the monsters by flying further into the cave with his elytra and hiding, where he is soon found by Rekrap. Although he survives the prank, the danger of flying with an elytra in an enclosed space could have easily killed him, and if his fight with the monsters had gone differently or if he had been on lower health before falling into the cave he could have died before even getting the chance to escape.
    • In Episode 3 of Season 2, some members of Red Team intend to pull a deadly prank on Blue Team by hiding a creaking heart covered in obsidian in the other team's base so a creaking will spawn to attack them. However, Blue Team has no trouble dealing with the creaking, simply having one player immobilize the creaking by looking at it so it no longer poses a threat and gives them an unlimited amount of time to find and destroy the creaking heart.
  • Dying Alone: Players who die alone may not have their deaths discovered until much later because of the lack of death messages. The players often try to defy this by forming groups of two or more players when going to do something dangerous so there will be someone left alive to inform the others of who died and how it happened, along with leaving notes at their base to tell the other players where they're going.
    • In Episode 1 of Season 2, Mogswamp died very early on before meeting any other players. Because they were not the only player who failed to make it to camp, the other players couldn't be completely sure that he was the one who had died.
    • In Episode 6 of Season 2, the players are given a compass pointing to a second trial chamber after they had already completed one that episode. Most of them consider this not worth the risk and choose not to follow the compass, but Rekrap messages Jaron to secretly go there with him. Rekrap says that he knows Jaron wants to go and he doesn't want Jaron to go alone. The two of them come close to death in the trial chamber, but they manage to complete it and both escape alive.
  • Epic Fail:
    • In both Season 1 and 2, Mogswamp ends up being the first eliminated, only lasting five minutes in the former and only lasting a full episode in the latter (not even getting to spawn before the episode's end).
    • In the first episode of Season 2, Reddoons falls down a hole at Red Team's base (which he'd previously blocked off, only for someone to open it back up) and fails a water bucket clutch (which gets worse, since he's seen pulling it off on the Season 2 Posters).
  • Everything Trying to Kill You: While this is already an aspect of normal Minecraft, it's exacerbated both by the players being unable to equip armor and the players being unable to regenerate naturally, meaning that even mild fall damage is extremely dangerous.
  • Faking the Dead: This is 4CVIT's main goal for the first half of season 2.
  • Foreshadowing: The Season 2 Posters foreshadow multiple events from the season.
    • Mogswamp is shown laying face down with a trident in his back, foreshadowing his death to a trident-wielding Drowned in Episode 1.
    • Evbo is shown with a blue flag in his hand and jumping off a tower, foreshadowing him mistaking himself for being a member of blue team and dying in a failed attempt to gain their approval.
    • Legundo is shown next to a conspiracy board, foreshadowing his obsession with figuring out who has been playing a goat horn near his team's base, who he calls the Goatman.
    • Ashswag is shown driving a milk van, foreshadowing him making one (or at least the closest thing to one in vanilla Minecraft) for the Triple Wither Fight.
    • Branzy is shown holding a baby that looks similar to him, foreshadowing his intentional death in Episode 1 because of the birth of his child.
    • Squiddo is shown peeking out of a nether portal, foreshadowing their death in the nether in Episode 2.
    • Jaron is shown riding a flying machine, foreshadowing his use of a flying machine to escape the Enderdragon fight.
    • Wunba is shown standing on a mushroom house and waving at Jaron, foreshadowing the house he builds and the fact that he joined Jaron in escaping the Enderdragon fight on a flying machine.
    • Blooh is shown being chased by a baby zombie, which is the monster he dies to in Episode 5.
    • 4CVIT is shown sitting alone outside of a cave under the campsite, foreshadowing how he spent the first half of the season hiding underground near his team's base.
    • SB737 is shown standing away from his team and crossing his arms, foreshadowing his decision in Episode 1 not to meet up with any other players until the teams would combine in Episode 4.
  • Geas: In the first episode of Season 2, each player gets a book from The Game Master giving them a test: to acquire a diamond pick and travel 12,000 blocks to make it home. While the books don't specify what will happen if someone fails these tasks, the players know that there will be a consequence. As it turns out, the penalty is to lose a permanent heart, leaving SB737 with a max health of only 9 hearts after Episode 1. This penalty is also mistakenly given to all surviving members of Blue Team at the end of the episode, which is fixed at the beginning of Episode 2, along with a small gift and apology from The Game Master.
  • Gender Cide: By the end of Season 2 Episode 6, all players who are not men have been eliminated.
  • Have a Nice Death: Unlike in normal Minecraft, the death screens don't show the player's cause of death, but instead display "You should have been more careful" in red text.
  • History Repeats:
    • Mogswamp ends up being the first eliminated in both Season 1 and Season 2, with his first attempt only lasting five minutes (long enough to be a Youtube short) while the second season had him lasting longer, but still dying early in the first episode.
    • Wunba is the only player to survive to the ending of both seasons.
  • Hope Spot:
    • After being separated from the other players earlier in Season 2, Loony finally reunites with them in the End in Episode 4 and even survives the fight against the Ender Dragon, to their joy.... only for him to, while chatting with the others, die right in front of them after accidentally looking at an Enderman and aggravating it, causing it to kill him in two hits.
    • In the same episode, Brock manages to successfully use a Splash Potion of Fire Resistance on himself while falling into lava and safely make it to land in the Nether… only for him to accidentally aggro a baby Zombie Piglin while using a Splash Potion Of Healing on himself, promptly getting killed by it.
  • I Call It "Vera":
    • Clownpierce uses a netherite sword named "Piercer"
    • In Season 2, MiniMukaMC and Rekrap after Muka's death uses a diamond sword named "Mini's Big Guy" as his primary weapon.
  • Permadeath: The server is set on hardcore mode, Minecraft's Final Death Mode, so players are completely eliminated from the season when they die.
  • Suicide, Not Accident: Going into Episode 1 of Season 2, Branzy had already decided to die on purpose, and he spent most of the episode deciding the best way to die while making it seem accidental. His suicide was to allow him to leave the series early because of his child's birth, rather than a reason within the game. His plan was complicated by Evbo following him into the trial chamber where he intended to die, leading some other players to hold Evbo somewhat responsible for Branzy's death.
  • Switching P.O.V.:
    • Each member uploads videos of their own perspective on the server, allowing the viewers to learn information that was hidden from some or all other players while the series was being recorded.
    • In Rekrap's Episode 2 of Season 2, it briefly switches to Clown's POV to show Evbo's death, which Rekrap did not witness in game, to accompany Clown's description of the event.
