Matara is an extraterrestrial cockroach, and the last living member of a planet populated by Insectoid Aliens which was suddenly devoured by a cosmic monstrosity, forcing her to flee. After spending quite some time drifting through space in her spaceship, asleep in her cocoon, she made her stay on another alien world, but left when she realized that her presence was creating a danger to the inhabitants. She then came to Earth in Canada, where she willingly participated in (unsuccessful) government experiments on her before escaping, befriending Ironmouse, and joining VShojo after a career in acting. On April 28th, 2025, both Matara herself and VShojo announced her departure from the company, with her final stream with them happening on May 5th. She has since continued streaming as an independent.

Matara is very much a "cool mom" or "awesome wine aunt" type of lady, being very sweet, caring, and motherly...and also a trollish gremlin in equal measure. Despite her roach theming, Matara typically tends to revel in cozy vibes and has a disarming, easygoing manner about herself, always warmly referring to people as her "honeys" or similar.

Along with her regular streams and collabs, in 2024 she and Maid Mint co-hosted Mint and Matara's Summer Special, a limited-run Podcast, and Matara debuted her solo podcast, In An Hour's Time, in 2026. She's also a longtime friend of her former colleagues Michi Nathaniel Mochievee, a patchwork zombie who runs an iffy shop that sells just about everything, and Kaizoku Kuro, a pirate who was seeking the One Piece before getting isekai'd into VShojo.

Matara provides examples of:

• Accidental Theft: Shortly after coming to Earth, she came to a store and grabbed a couple of things from it, unaware that she had to pay for them first. This is because the stores on her home planet gave away everything for free.
• Alien Autopsy: Subverted; the military scientists who tried to take her apart to study her anatomy weren't able to so much as scratch her with their tools.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Her cited powers are Create Swarm, Metamorphosis, Regeneration, Mind Control, Body Takeover, and Soft Hug.
• Artist Disillusionment: In her debut lore video, she gives a press conference where she announces that she's leaving her film career, citing being tired of getting very limited role options, burnout from the hustle and bustle of her career, and other reasons. She later repeats these sentiments to her therapist.
• Bad Powers, Good People: Putting "Soft Hug" aside, Matara's cited powers are typically associated with an insect-themed villain, but Matara herself is a warm and motherly figure who rescued an alien planet from multiple threats, though she left said planet upon realizing that she is being targeted specifically and tended to leave behind a lot of collateral damage.
• Black Widow: In her gift unboxing stream, she once off-handedly mentioned that she makes her money by marrying rich men, eating them, and then selling their rings; she only kept one ring.
• Blind Without 'Em: Matara admits to having very terrible eyesight. She had glasses once but lost them a couple of years ago, although her "casual clothes" outfit has glasses as a toggle option.
• Body Snatcher: One of her cited powers. She's stated that she is inhabiting the body of a human woman, referring to her as a "flesh mecha" or "flesh Gundam", which implies that what the public sees is a mix of that woman's body and her alien roach form rather than her true appearance. She also mentions talking to her "flesh mother" and the hijinks that can result, and she is working on developing human limbs for a 3D debut.
• Came Back Wrong: Thanks to having died from biting Evil Momo, when Matara comes back to life after her coffin is burned, she now has an "evil" form that is a much more monstrous interpretation of her original insect appearance. Her insect legs are thicker and spikier, her humanoid limbs are spiky and have turned black, and she has mandible-like structures on her jaws which, per the reference sheet◊, can split into their own mouths. Additionally, she now has several horns of various sizes on her head that form a crown-like shape, most of her hair has turned black and her eyes have turned solid yellow, and she's now wearing a form-fitting dress in black, dark red, and violet with a scaly appearance and teeth on her Cleavage Window. She also has all of Evil Momo's memories as a side effect.
  Matara: What doesn't kill you makes you evil and strange and makes your boobies a little bit smaller.
• Creepy Cockroach:
  • Zig-zagged. She is a cockroach girl who manages to be beautiful and give a warm, motherly character, but she also has powers fitting for an insect-themed supervillain.
  • Likewise inverted with the Momos. At least, putting aside their transformation process.
• Cute Monster Girl: She's a beautiful humanoid cockroach girl, complete with wing-like structures and antenna-like extensions on her head, insect legs coming from her back, and her human arms and legs having insectile joints and digits on the hands and feet.
• Dark Is Not Evil: She is an alien resembling an insect stereotyped as repulsive and filthy, and her debut message gives a strong Yandere vibe while also showcasing her twitching insectoid extra limbs. The "Something Wicked This Way Comes" announcement also gives her a horror-like vibe, and she boasts some delightfully evil-sounding powers like summoning swarms and Mind Control. Momo, the mascot that represents her fanbase, is the result of her implanting her eggs inside her fans, and she occasionally talks about eating both Momos and her husbands. Despite all this, she seems warm and motherly and has fled a planet rather than put the native population in undue danger.
• De-power: The contract that she signed with Evil Momo came with the stipulation that she would give up her powers. This came with the side effect of giving her a more normal human body, including fully digited hands and feet, which she's expressed some dismay over.
• Destructive Saviour: Defied. She took care of the people who took her in on the world she originally arrived on after her home planet was destroyed, including defending them from predators. However, this drew the attention of dangerous aliens, and they began coming after her to try to get the glory of actually defeating her. She easily fended them off, but when she saw the collateral damage that was being caused, she realized she couldn't stay with the other people anymore and chose to leave.
• Face Full of Alien Wing-Wong: Momo, the cute insect mascot, represents the fanbase because making contact with Matara causes her to implant her eggs inside you, and the maggots that hatch eat you from the inside out until you eventually turn into one; Matara describes the transformation process here.
• Fangs Are Evil: Downplayed; she has prominent canines and an extra pair of fang-like upper teeth◊ and can come off as sinister at times, but overall she's more of a good-natured troll/bully (especially to Zentreya) than actually evil.
• The Farmer and the Viper: Set up at the end of "The Trial of Evil Momo". Evil Momo convinces Matara to sign a contract to give up her powers so that he may be spared and reintegrated into Momo society. When he and Matara shake hands to seal the deal, Evil Momo crosses his fingers behind his back, immediately showing that he's willing to betray her down the line. This betrayal eventually happens in the lore video that establishes Matara's "evil" form, as Evil Momo sneaks into her house, disguises itself as an apple, and hides in her fruit bowl. Matara picks him up and bites him, leading to her death.
• Fight Magnet: As a consequence of being very hardy, Matara found herself drawing the attention of many dangerous aliens who began targeting her specifically, hoping to earn the glory of finally defeating her.
• Freudian Couch: Played with during a segment of her intro video where she talks to her therapist about her former career and some of the things going on with her mentally and emotionally. Rather than a couch, she appears to be in her bed with a heavy quilt pulled over her.
• Fur and Loathing: Played with by her "evil" form, which combines her wings, a spiky carapace, and a huge fur ruff to give the impression of wearing a large coat.
• Hair Antennae: True to her being an extraterrestrial cockroach, she has two long strands sprouting from her head and curving forward, and she can use them to sense the world around her. She can also remove her antennae, but she says that without them she feels like she's wearing earmuffs.
• Healing Factor: "Regeneration", listed as one of her cited powers. It perhaps explains why she is extremely hardy.
• Horrible Judge of Character: Matara very easily takes Evil Momo at his word when he offers a contract to get her to give up her powers in exchange for being spared. Meanwhile, Evil Momo crosses his fingers behind his back as he shakes her hand, and is later shown plotting and scheming to take over Momopolis again before trying to get Matara to eat him.
• In Medias Res: The lore video for Matara's "evil" form starts with her funeral, showing messages of mourning from a handful of Vtubers and various clips of her in different models, before changing to show exactly how she died.
• Insectoid Alien: Not just Matara, who is an extraterrestrial cockroach, but all the inhabitants of her planet, who are shown as resembling various insects and worms.
• Insect Gender-Bender: In real life, female cockroaches have shorter wings than males; male cockroach wings extend past their abdomens. Despite being a female, her Hair Wings extend well past her abdomen.
• Lady Drunk: Downplayed. She's the last of her kind and burnt out from the hustle and bustle of her film career, leading her to have a goblet or two of red wine handy, but she's not misanthropic like other examples, being a kind, motherly figure above all. Her original model even features a toggle to give her a goblet of wine, as was seen during her 12/31/23 stream◊, and she later figured out how to duplicate and flip that arm, having a good laugh at the sight of her waving around two wine goblets.
• Last of Her Kind: She alone escaped the destruction of her home planet by an alien monstrosity.
• Literal Maneater: Matara occasionally engages in this, eating rich men after marrying them (note that her host is a woman), to say nothing about her occasionally eating her Momos.
• Lying Finger Cross: After he gets Matara to sign a contract in that she must give up her powers before he gets spared, Evil Momo crosses his fingers, meaning that he's exploiting Matara's mercy.
• Meaningful Name: "Mother" and "cockroach" are always key components of her name, however it is broken down.
  • Matara Kan's name appears to be a composite of "mātā" and "tarakán". "Mātā" is a Sanskrit word (among other languages) meaning "mother", which goes nicely with her motherly character. The Russian word "tarakán" (тарака́н in Cyrillic) means "cockroach", referring to her overall character.
  • Her "alien" name, "Mat'tarakan", is an even subtler example. It appears at first to be your common case of punctuation shaking, but the apostrophe is sometimes used by Russian people when transliterating Russian words in English to signify the presence of a soft sign (ь). This strongly implies her true name is supposed to be "мать таракан" (roughly transliterated as "má'ts tarakán"), literally "mother cockroach" in Russian (which she later confirms).
• Meat Puppet: Her host body, which Matara initially described as a "flesh Gundam" or "flesh mecha" but now just refers to as "my flesh woman".
• Metamorphosis: One of her cited powers, though we have yet to see this demonstrated. However, she did say that her fanbase undergoes this in becoming a Momo, starting with her touching her fans and implanting her eggs.
• Mind Control: One of her cited powers, which she demonstrates by making everyone watching her debut lore video repeat a segment where she's talking to her therapist. The visual cue for this appears to be her crossing her upper pairs of insect legs over her upper body and projecting an aura.
• Motherly Side Plait: Her casual clothes outfit has her sporting one which goes over her left shoulder.
• Nigh-Invulnerability: Her military captors tried to dissect her, hit her with gunfire and explosives, and even ran her over with a tank, but she came out without a scratch. Given that cockroaches are extremely hardy, this only makes sense.
• Non-Mammal Mammaries: She has a rather impressively large chest area; however, given her Body Snatcher nature, it may be her "flesh woman"'s actual bosom instead of her alien form's. Her "casual clothes" model's assets are even larger, with plentiful Jiggle Physics, but her military-themed model is on par with her original and her "evil" model is slightly smaller.
  Matara: Double D's, triple threat, baby!
• Pest Controller: One of her stated abilities is to summon insect swarms.
• Pimped-Out Dress: Her debut outfit is a long frilled dress with insect-leg motifs that combines a Cleavage Window, bared abs, and a hip-high slit that reveals what she's apparently not wearing. It also features two golden cockroach-shaped brooches with pink and purple gems.
• Pronouncing My Name for You: Her name is technically spelled "Mat'tarakan", but she settles on "Matara Kan" (which she describes as a close enough English approximation) for the sake of convenience for her viewers.
• Ridiculously Cute Critter: The Momos, depicted as a small white cockroach with purple antennae and exoskeleton. At least, putting the transformation process aside.
  Everyone please meet Momo. Momo wasn't always Momo. Momo became Momo. You will all become Momo.
• Running Gag:
  • She gets a kick out of deliberately mis-saying or mispronouncing certain terms or names, such as referring to Star Wars as "the Star War"; pronouncing the 40K novel Brutal Kunnin as "Koonin" and the "Baja" in Baja Blast with the j instead of with an h; and saying Depeche Mode as "Depish Mud". During a stream with Ironmouse where they were hearing confessions from chat, Ironmouse put on a nun's habit over her model, and got tickled when Matara asked her to send over the image by saying "pinj" instead of "PNG".
  • If people in her chat give 50 or 100 gift subscriptions, she will let them choose a partnered Twitch member to be banned from her chat for 3 days or a week, respectively. This has led to multiple instances of Bricky getting banned, along with several people from VShojo, other Vtubers, and Vtuber-adjacent people such as Nagzz. As Matara puts it, it's not personal, it's for the money.
• Shamed by a Mob: The Evil Momo who attacked Matara Kan and her Momos gets captured and carted away in a carriage. Along the way, the Momos make faces and jeer at him.
• Shout-Out:
  • The films she's starred in (with posters to match) include Juroachic Park, Mandibles, The Good, the Bad, and the Cockroach, The Silence of the Kans, E.T.C. the Extra-Terrestrial Cockroach, Mad Mata: Fury Roach, and Blade Roach 2049.
  • The opening animation for her streams that replaced the ratings screen is an animation of her dancing in the same way as the dancing cockroach meme.
• Speaking Simlish: The Momos all communicate to each other in gibberish and what sounds like a waggling of the tongue. By contrast, when Matara appears in "The Trial of Evil Momo", she speaks intelligibly.
• Squee: Subverted when listening to Maid Mint's cover of "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt, in which Mint uses her deep sultry "big sister" voice. Matara's reaction is actually very tame, but this is because she's familiar enough with Mint's singing to point out that Mint is actually being restrained with that cover.
• Statuesque Stunner: At 5'11", she was the second-tallest of the VShojo roster, with only Kson beating her.
• Tempting Apple: Played with in the lore video that establishes Matara's "evil" form. Evil Momo infiltrates her house disguised as an apple, and Matara picks him out of the bowl without looking and bites him, which leads to her death and eventual rebirth.
• The Unpronouncable: Her name is technically "Mat'tarakan", but she admits it would be way too difficult for her viewers to understand even if she were to pronounce it for them, so she settles for "Matara Kan", a close English approximation.
• Wine Is Classy: She's a retired actress with a refined, affable personality and a fondness for a good red.
