And Beyond (Web Animation)

And Beyond is a series of animated videos created by The Ink Tank, closely tied to the 5 Years Later series.

It is a mockumentary series that serves to explain the lore behind the world of Five Years Later. The narrator to all the videos is a Galvan-created robot named Horas.

  • Adaptational Heroism: The Saiyans of the setting are far less destructive and murderous to those around them than their canon counterparts. Their settling of planet Vegeta, most notably, has them living in co-existence with the Tuffles and not blowing them all up into extinction.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection:
    • The Weapon Masters of Techadon created the Sonorosians (Echo Echo's species) as a servant species.
    • Saiyans are offshoots of the Kryptonian species that adapted to the world of Vegeta with constant exposure to yellow sunlight.
  • Adaptational Name Change: In canon Word of God is that the residents of Anur Ormerow are called Ormerowons, however due to the And Beyond crew not liking when aliens are just called Planet-ians Ormerow's residents are now called Wrighthers.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: A minor example with Toepick, in the show he just had a very horrifying face. However in the episode about the Anur system it's revealed that his species produces a gas that targets ones fear receptors and can create a light that immobilizes anything that sees it.
  • After the End: Both Sonorosia and Kylmyys are both post-apocalyptic wastelands caused by predecessors ruining the environment.
  • All Your Powers Combined: The episode on Appoplexia reveals that Khyber the Huntsman regained his mind following his use of the Nemetrix and has transformed into an amalgam of every Nemetrix alien, akin to both Phil's Terroranchula form and Kevin's various amalgamations.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Beyond 5 is filled with a lot of muscular and beautiful Saiyan women, with the few Kryptonian women exposed to yellow sunlight also having this appearance.
  • Ancient Astronauts: Thep Khufans visited Earth in Ancient Egyptian times and shaped the culture there as a result.
  • Big Bad: Zs'Skayr is the overarching villain throughout the And Beyond series, having not only recruiting some of Ben 10's most dangerous villains but also having countless Horas units captured for his own sinister ends.
  • Butt-Monkey: The list of bad stuff inflicted onto Horas is astounding, including getting stomped, slimed, iced, electrocuted and eaten.
  • The Cameo:
    • Among the beings shown in silhouette as not being able to break into the Ghost Zone during Beyond's third episode include Azmuth, Professor Membrane, Ceasar Salazar, Beerus the God of Destruction, Jimmy Neutron, Saitama, and Trigon.
    • Chris Guerrero appears at the end of the And Beyond episode on this universe's Saiyans and Kryptonians, reprising his role of Dr. Gero from Dragon Ball Z Abridged.
    • On Beyond's episode covering Legerdomain, a demon that looks a lot like Tom Lucitor can be seen in a crowd shot.
    • The And Beyond on X'Nelli features a massive collection of alien species and individual characters cameoing from across the Ben 10 series and the Ink Tank.
      • Individual cameos include Attea, Kevin Levin, Looma Red Wind, Verdona, Vulkanus, Collectiumus, and Kuro himself.

  • Canon Character All Along: In the "And Beyond" episode focusing on Legerdomain, a masked figure known as "The Emissary" retrieves Horas from Cursecrafter. This Emissary seems to be a new character, until she brings Horas to his king: Charmcaster, and she refers to the Emissary as "Michael", revealing him to actually be Michael Morningstar / Darkstar.
  • Composite Character: Bardock manages to be a composite character of two versions of himself: he resembles his canon self in appearance and may have been in the battle against Frieza, but he also is a 'great inventor' who managed to reverse engineer the scouters for the Saiyans own, more benevolent, use.
  • Connected All Along:
    • "And Beyond" reveals that the Techadon Weapon Masters (or the Olimarans as they were originally known) created Echo Echo's race, the Sonorosians, as a source of cheap labor.
    • The episode on the Anur system would directly tie Toepick to the Anur races and Eye Guy's race to Toepick's. Expanded material would connect Way Big's species, the To'kustar, to the Ectonurites and reveal their home 'planet', a space rip, formed from the corpse of one (which is referenced in the main episode, but not directly identified as one), following a battle with a member of The Void's species, the Pae Sadilla.
    • Fastrack's species, the Citrakayah, come from the same system as the Kinecelerans.
  • Death by Adaptation: Freeza died in this setting's version of the attempted destruction/conquest of Vegeta, per Word of God, and seems prone to actually staying dead.
  • Divergent Character Evolution:
    • In this series Saiyans are descendants of Kryptonians whose colony was abandoned and eventually resettled on planet Vegeta and evolved on the planet. The evolution seems to have cost them some of the super abilities a Kryptonian can have (such as super breath and laser vision) in exchange for learning how to use Ki for energy blasts and transform into a Golden Super Mode.
    • Fasttrack is listed as having enhanced smell and hearing to distinguish him a bit from fellow speedster aliens (mainly XLR8).
    • Toepick's species evolved from Eye Guy's Opticoid species when stranded on a planet with twelve times gravity and mutagenic Corrodium which squashed the cartilage forms down into dumpier appearances and limited the species' eyes to their faces while gaining paralyzing gas and light powers.
  • Expy:
    • The Saiyans origin story in-universe has a fair amount in common with the Daxamites as an offshoot species from Kryptonian settlers that developed different powers as a result of their isolation.
    • Their friendly nature, tropical utopia planet, off-human skin tone despite looking human, and animalistic elements can also bring the Tamaraneans (Starfire's species) to mind.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • The Olimarans (Weapon Masters of Techadon) to the Galvan. Both are immensely intelligent and known for invention, but the Olimarans primarily build weapons and lack the empathy and emotion the Galvan have. They also created artificial intelligent life by accident in the form of the Sonorosians and Galvanic Mechamorphs, respectively, but the Sonorosians were created to be servants and workers and remained this way even after discovering their sentience while the Galvan gave the moon of Galvan B to the Mechamorphs.
    • The Kryptonians are similarly intelligent, dissimilarly amoral counterparts to the Galvan. Unlike the Olimarans they managed to not destroy their planet, though this is only due to their technology. They also seek to prove themselves against the Galvan's intelligence, but they don't primarily build weapons to sell to others. They are in fact much less social with other species than either the Galvan or Olimaran. Their actions led to the creation of a new species, but they did not create the Saiyans the same way that the Galvan or Olimarans did (it was an evolution of a lost colony).
    • The Thep Khufans are a lesser example: like the Galvan, they accidentally created a species known as the Wrighthers. However, this was caused by them abandoning mutating humans on Anur Ormerow, unlike the Galvan who gave the Mechamorphs Galvan B. Unlike the completely abandoned Sonorosians however the Khufans are interested in their former servants and do try to help them. This just often tends to involve trying to return them to their ancestral home, which goes poorly every single time it is tried.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: In "And Beyond", it was revealed Spellbinder, Charmcaster's father, found a weary Addwaitya and nursed him back to health, yet Addwaitya repaid that kindness by stealing the Alpha Rune and becoming a tyrant lording over Legerdomain with an iron fist.
  • Gentle Giant: The lore video on Terradino (homeworld of Humungousaur's species and Orion squad member Crawnch) declares the Vaxisarians this: being the friendliest of Terradino's three major races, if also the least intelligent.
  • Good Counterpart:
    • The Eter'Caniec are underpowered, highly advanced predecessors whose actions ruined their world. However, unlike the Olimarans it was not by intentional resource overuse but by poor but well-intentioned choices. They also are extinct predecessor species like the Vladats (that could be obtained by Ben in a similar way to Whampire), but the Eter'Caniec did not exist with the Necrofriggians and Thermoscorians and thus did not enslave them.
    • Kusen Encephalonus of Encephalonus has a lot of similarities to Rao. Kusen reshaped his entire system's way of life by his own action, revolutionizing society and years after his death has statues of himself everywhere. Their system and planets were even renamed after him. However while Rao reshaped things by force, Kusen was an explorer and societal uplifter who wanted all the races of the system to grow together as equals. Rao was feared and admired, while Kusen was beloved and admired. While both end up starting a line of rulers who rule their systems with force, Kusen specifically tried to avoid that by having children with each race and trusting them to uphold his moral standards, knowing very well that things could devolve if not handled well, only for that to happen against his wishes over the generations, while Rao's heirs ruling Krypton that way was by design, to a point of withholding the secrets of Kryptonian power from the populace to do so.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Saiyans in the series originated from Kryptonian colonists whose world was cut off and out of resources who, when aided by the Dragons and Tuffles did not blow them up, conquer other worlds, and otherwise be unpleasant blood knights like their canon counterparts or their destructive Kryptonian brethren. As a result, they thrived with a higher tech level and resource availability than in canon and were able to drive off Freiza, and have one of the most popular planets for tourism in the entire Andromeda Galaxy.
  • Monster Whale: The episode on Aeropela introduces the Aerophibians natural predator, the orca like Leviicteans, who emit blinding steam and disorienting sonic blasts. It's also mentioned that the species has turned to piracy due to a lack of natural resources in their enviroment.
  • Multicultural Alien Planet: Many of the planets featured in "And Beyond" and the expanded universe have more than one sentient species of various tech levels.
    • Terradino is home to the Vaxasaurians, Pturbosaurians, and the Mulgogians. The subterranean Mulgogians are the most advanced of the three with a tech level comparable to that of Earth (give or take a century or two) while the rest of the planet is akin to the Stone Age but the Pturbosaurians consider themselves the supreme species due to being able to fly. Conflict between the two is common, while the Vaxasaurians are friendly with both groups.
    • Methanos is home to the Methanosians and the Xolbrine. The Methanosian live in the forests while the Xolbrine are limited to bogs. The species do not frequently interact though the Xolbrine are known to occasionally abduct and feed on young Methanosians. Their tech level is similarly primitive.
    • Sonorosia is home to two inorganic races in the Sonorosians and the Sanavox. The Sanavox inhabit the storm-ridden ruins of the surface while the Sonorosians inhabit old tunnel systems under the surface though both species frequently interact in friendly trade and cooperation. The creators of the Sonorosians, the Olimarans, departed the planet as it fell into desolate ruin before the Sanavox were accidentally created. While the planet under the Olimarans was highly advanced with a tech level of 13, the post-apocalyptic state it currently is in has reduced the tech level considerably, though the two species seek to restore the planet in the vain hope of the return of the Olimarans.
    • Planet Vegeta is the home planet of a race called the Tuffles, who traded their abundant plant resources with the dragonic neighboring planet of Zaka Chagg for metallic resources. Zaka Chagg's overpopulation meant a permanent population of Dragons and the eventual settling of a failed Kryptonian colony's population led to the evolution of a third species in the Saiyans whose power and technology helped create a utopian planet.
    • Krypton is a planet with the Tech Level 18 under the immigrant Kryptonians. The native Rrejjoe, who may or may not be sentient, are primitive animalistic (or outright animals) stone creatures whose ability to create a unique gem with energy-storing properties led to them being over-harvested by the Kryptonians.
    • The Anur system has several planets with sizeable populations of different sentient species: Anur Millgan is home to the aquatic Milit Lagish and the Sonarquids who frequently cooperate while Anur Transyl is home to many Theb Khufans, Ectonurites, and Loboans as well as the native Transylians. The planet was even stabilized by a multi-species collation centuries ago. The planet also used to be home to populations of the Vladat species who forcibly dominated the planet, but a multi-species coalition with the aforementioned species and other more isolated species in the system led to the Vladats extermination. Tech levels vary from planet to planet, with the fairly high-tech Anur Transyl and Anur Khufos contrasting with the techless Anur Ormerow and the isolated Anur G'rrnay whose tech level is comparable to Earth.
    • Kylmyys, the home plant of Necrofriggians (Big Chill), is also home to a deep-sea species known as the Thermoscorians, and the predecessor species known as the Eter' Caneic, which are now extinct. The two extant species don't generally interact, though some Necrofriggians may prey on the deep-sea species. The planet is very low-tech, with the Necrofriggians lacking society at all due to their anti-social behavior. It was at a higher tech under the Eter' Caneic, but they managed to kill themselves off by burning away the planet's atmosphere and the tech level has never recovered.
    • Aeropela itself is home to the Aerophibians, Jetray's species, a species dedicated to racing and thrill-seeking who work as intergalactic deliverymen for the Aero-To-Go company. Due to their planet's unique structure, its immediate outer environs are inhabited by the Leviicteans, a space-dwelling whale-like species that predate on the Aerophibians and live as pirates. While the planet is key to the intergalactic economy, it lacks an economy of its own and its tech seems to be entirely based on off-world technology tied to Aero-To-Go.
    • X'Nelli is home to a dozen species of Manzardills who all live together via a combination of shared religious beliefs in their creator god and their individual adaptations to specific environs of the planet. Along with running a planet-wide tourism industry, the Subter and Subtar species work together specifically in their underwater homes for exploration and navigation.
    • The Encephalonus system planets, I, II, III, and VI, are co-inhabited by all four native species, the Paraklept, the Valirectrac, the Limulequus, and the Cerebrocrustaceans, and led by the Cerebrus Caste, the inter-planetary government. While formed with moral intentions to avoid abuse, over the generations the rulers became corrupted and decadent, leading to abuses of the citizens, particualrly the non-Cerebrocrustaceans citizens of the system. The Paralkept in particular were encouraged to move in large numbers to Encephalonus VI as their paralyzing touch is a strong deterrent to Vicetopus attacks.
  • Mythical Motifs: The Encephalonus system has a Atlantis motif, though not in the form of the planets sinking for their hubris. Instead an earlier part of the legend, where Poseidon had multiple lines of kings co-rule the island who slowly lost their divinity, and thus goodness, over the centuries due to becoming less divine over time, is the part clearly echoed where Kusen's four children meant to rule the system as benevolent successors of his lost his inherent morality over time and become the very selfish, cruel, and abusive rulers he feared would replace him.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • In the "And Beyond" episode focusing on Legerdomain, the sorceress Cursecrafter alludes to what happens when certain inhabitants become too dependent on mana. She mentions that the descendants of those sorcerers have a never-ending hunger for mana, and even shows off a marking on her hand in the shape of a mouth, referencing Darkstar.
    • Charmcaster's young design is based on her appearance in the reboot
    • In the episode on speedster aliens the planet Kinet has a species known as Mollusparx which are based on the Molluscarx mentioned in the reboot's Alien Worlds episode on Kinet. Like in the reboot the spheres on a Kineceleran's feet are obtained from them but while with the Molluscarx the spheres are their pearls, the Mollusparx spheres are instead the synovial joints of their infants
    • The episode on Appoplexia features an Appolexian Plumber named Skraprr Byakko, who is a character from the Ben 10 comics
  • Named by the Adaptation: a few examples when it comes to species
    • Toepick's species are here reffered to as Terretnal Ogres

    • In the original series Ben's Necrofriggian children went unnamed but here they were all given names (Glacier, Kenko, Maxwell, Smoothie, Popfly, Slurpee, Cotton, Candy, Ishiyama, Jackie, Chillifry, Frosty, Snow Ball and Cube)
  • Proud Merchant Race: The Thep Khufans are this of the Anur system, leveraging their planet's rich deposits of corrodium (a powerful resource in the system) to become an economic powerhouse.
  • Planet of Hats: The Dragon mapmaker in 'Alien Force' was the only representation of the species in canon. In this series, Dragons have a species-wide goal of mapping the entire universe.
  • Related in the Adaptation:
    • The Saiyans are an off-shoot of Kryptonians who mutated from exposure to a combination of yellow sunlight and ki.
    • Terretnal Ogres (Toepick's species) are the descendants of Opticoids (Eye Guy's species) that were stranded on Anur G'rrnay.
    • Atomix is identified as a Prypiatosian-A, a relative of the Prypiatosian-B (NRG's species).
    • The Krakken from the original series is identified here as a Ganic Lagorge: An Apex creature native to Anur Millgan in the Anur System that is important to the planets' ecosystem by producing the mineral-rich black waters that are found across 91% of the planet.
  • Royalty Superpower: The Rulers of Krypton, the 'Gods' that are descended from the first God Rao, are the only Kryptonians with yellow sun-charged powers. The means of getting these powers are kept secret by them: preventing any other Kryptonians from leaving their planet and discovering the means of obtaining them.
  • Running Gag: The "And Beyond" side series has one in Horas suffering some kind of misfortune at the end, whether being destroyed or possessed.
  • Servant Race: The Sonorosians were originally created by the Olimarans (the weapon masters of Techadon) to serve them and left them on Sonorosia when the planet became uninhabitable for them.
  • Sequel Hook: The X'Nelli And Beyond ends with two for the second season of And Beyond.
    • V-04 being teleported, this time to Brainstorm's home planet of Encephalonus IV.
    • Addwaitya laying waste to X'Nelli.
    • Khyber collecting destroyed Horas units on Appoplexia.
  • She Is the King: In the "And Beyond" episode focusing on Legerdomain, Charmcaster is shown to be the king of Legerdomain.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Un-Reveal: A few And Beyond episodes, like Terradino and the Ages Orbit, mention that the focused species are not the only sentient lifeforms in their planet/system, though these other species are not elaborated on beyond this one point.
