In times of fear marked by a deadly plague, a young woman works hard to provide for her family. One day her village is attacked and her family slaughtered by knights. As she flees from the chaos, she meets a mysterious man who brings her to a hidden kingdom and proclaims her the Moon Witch. The woman must navigate her new status as conflicts, secrets, and hidden plots unfold in this unfamiliar world.
Volontés is a Japanese otome Visual Novel developed by LocaGame. It was released in Japan as 魔女と亡霊のヴォロンテ (Majo to Bourei no Volonte, lit. Witch and Ghost Volonte) on May 22, 2025 for the Nintendo Switch.
The English version was localized by Adventures Inc. via Kickstarter
and released on March 26, 2026.
The visual novel contains the following tropes:
- Ambition Is Evil: The reason Fiena suffers in the first place is due to Father Thomas' ambitions to rank up in the clergy. He made up a story about a red-haired witch and Fiena happened to fit the description.
- Burn the Witch!: The reason Meurtri Village is attacked. The knights were looking for a red-haired "witch".
- Covert Group: The Nouvelle Ere, a secret group in Ombrelle that aims to eliminate Sendria and spread Sihrik in Novandia. Also doubles as Church Militant.
- Doomed Hometown: The story starts when Fiena's hometown of Meurtri Village is attacked and the residents indiscriminately slaughtered by Molrois knights.
- Fantasy Counterpart Religion: The game has heavy religious themes and highlights the conflict between the Sendria Church of Novandia and the Sihrik religion of Ombrelle. This conflict is what caused Ombrelle to break off and isolate as a hidden island in the first place. Both religions are offshoots of the necromancy of Nil's time, which has since been banned in both religions due to the danger of the Fantomes.
- Greater-Scope Villain: Father Thomas incited the raid on Meurtri Village to get a promotion for eliminating a "witch"
- The Heretic: Followers of Sihrik are considered this in Novandia. Many such followers were persecuted by the Sendrian church and sought refuge in Ombrelle. Olivier hypothesizes Fiena's parents fell into this category.
- Magic Is Evil: The Sendrian Church specifically ties magic use with heretics, although any human with the right affinity can use magic. The magic used by Sendrian priests is instead called “the power of miracles”.
- Muggles: Those without innate magic abilities are called Gens. The Order of Lanywyr is mostly comprised of non-magic knights, while the Holy Order is comprised of mage knights.
- Multiple Endings: Happy, Plunder, and Tragic ends for each route. There are also multiple game overs and an additional Nil ending in Olivier's route.
- Older Than He Looks: Applicable to anybody who enters and exits Ombrelle due to time moving slower there vs the outside world. When Fiena returns outside after a year and a half, 18 years have passed outside.
- Pay Evil unto Evil: The Sendria Church commanded Melodie to curse King Corneille, which produces the first Fantome that terrorizes Ombrelle. Fiena learns necromancy in nearly all routes but in Olivier's route, she manages to summon all of the Fantomes that have multiplied over the story and unleash them in La Cite to terrorize and multiply across Novandia.
- Vengeful Ghost: Essentially what the Fantomes are. They are cursed souls unable to ascend. Being attacked by one turns the victim into a Fantome. The curse can only be lifted if the original caster is killed by the first victim.
- Yandere: Melodie in Ismail’s route, Olivier in Emmanuel’s route, and Florent in Olivier’s route. Especially disturbing in Olivier’s Plunder End when Florent doesn’t acknowledge Fiena as his adoptive sister.
- Year Outside, Hour Inside: The Grande Cloche which provides a barrier for Ombrelle from the outside world distorts space-time around it, causing time to move slower in Ombrelle than in Novandia.
