VS Cartoon Cat is a mod for Friday Night Funkin' directed by KenethYT, and is centered around the Slimyswampghost mythos by Trevor Henderson, alongside other fan creations based off of his works.

The story takes place in an Alternate Universe where Trevor's creations have breached into the real world and have killed the majority of his family, save for their daughter, Luna Henderson. This includes the iconic Cartoon Cat himself, who now resides in an abandoned mall.

This mall is where Boyfriend and Girlfriend end up after Monster dragged them there to be Killed Off for Real. Of course, the monster didn't account for other creeps in the vicinity, and this is where chaos truly started to unfold...

This mod contains the following tropes:

• Alternate Reality Game: After completing Week 1, a separate game that connects to the lore and Luna's time before the mod's present day has to be played to get the code needed to access the rest of the story.
• Apocalypse How: Due to Boyfriend's singing against the Cartoon Cat, Luna predicts that it'll cause The End of the World as We Know It. Fortunately, due to Boyfriend winning fair and square, it never comes to that, but it does leave Trevor's other creations on the prowl.
• Art Shift: Near the end of "That's All Folks!", the artstyle is changed to that of a classic cartoon from the early days, with Boyfriend's design changed to match. This same art style is used in its entirety for "Toon Swing" in Free Play.
• Bait-and-Switch Boss: Monster is set up to be the first opponent of the mod, being the one responsible for dragging Boyfriend and Girlfriend to an empty mall, but he gets ambushed and knocked out by Cartoon Cat, who then takes his place as the first opponent to rap battle Boyfriend.
• Bathos:
  • The premise of Week 1 is pretty serious, what with a toothy cat killing his creator Trevor Henderson and the entire Henderson family save for the daughter Luna (the players get to experience the horror by looking from Mrs Henderson and Luna's P.O.Vs.). Said cat then proceeds to cause reality to tear apart and cause The End of the World as We Know It... because a lemon-headed monster kidnapped two 19-year-olds and brought them to that cat's domain. And said 19-year-olds decided to challenge that Halloween-furry-who-is-actually-a-world-ending-abomination to a rap battle because they could. It's... as ludicrous as it sounds.
    Daniel: Alright, we secured the target^note Cartoon Cat without it noticing us. And it seems like it's uhh... I know this is gonna sound weird, but... It's in a rap battle with a blue-haired midget. And ex-rap star Daddy Dearest's daughter is there, too. We also found this humanoid creature with a lemon as its head^note shown with the Family Guy Death Pose. It looks a bit damaged. I don't think it'll be a problem for us.
    *unintelligible response from the other end of comms*
    Daniel: Understood. Well guys, go and get everything prepared. We'll get to work soon. We're gonna lose at least half the team... But it will all be worth it once this Felix the Cat knockoff is destroyed.
    Michael: The mission will fail.
    Daniel: Huh?
    Michael: Reality will begin to tear apart, and the whole world will go to hell.
    Daniel: Michael, not now.
    Michael: And it's all because of two idiots who challenged the Cartoon Cat into a rap battle.
    Daniel: Hey, calm down.
    Michael: CAN'T YOU SEE, DANIEL!? We've lost almost everything we knew about this monster ever since it killed Trevor and the entire Henderson family! And you still think we have a chance against it!?
  • Week 2's humor thrives on bathos. Luna is understandably panicking, running for her life from a 40-foot-tall siren monster out for her blood. Meanwhile, Boyfriend and Girlfriend, being too dumb to realize they are in danger, decide it's the perfect time to start a rap battle and crank up the volume. Nothing says "survival" like alerting a bloodthirsty monster to your exact location.
• Bittersweet Ending: At the end of Week 2, Boyfriend successfully baits Siren Head over an unstable bridge and knocks it and himself into a river, possibly defeating or injuring the abomination. He is saved, however, by Girlfriend and Luna, who have patched things up with each other after the distress beforehand, and the trio wing it together. Despite Cartoon Cat's threat being nonexistent for now, Trevor's other creations are still roaming the Earth, though Luna reasons that humanity can learn to live alongside them now. The Stinger a few years afterwards shows Luna being ready to take up her father's lineage, taking ownership of Trevor's creations to finally allow his soul to rest in peace.
• Conveniently an Orphan: Luna Henderson being orphaned by Cartoon Cat is what allows her storyline (i.e., her fleeing from home to the wilderness to avoid being killed by her father's creations) to progress; she doesn't need to justify leaving her family behind when her family is dead.
• Evil Brit: Monster is depicted with a British accent in this mod.
• Faux Affably Evil: Cartoon Cat is an always-grinning Felix the Cat look-alike who rap battles Boyfriend with gusto, but if Boyfriend loses, Cartoon Cat will happily kill the blue-haired rapper, the rapper's girlfriend, and the entire world. The reason why Cartoon Cat hasn't done that yet is that he finds Boyfriend's spunk entertaining and enjoys ripping people apart in the thousands of cat-and-mouse games in his mall.
  Cartoon Cat: (to Boyfriend) Well child, I'm sorry for trying to kill you earlier therefore breaking our little deal. However it seems our game has been interrupted by those sad saps over there... Every single year the same thing happens over and over again, it's starting to irritate me. I mean, what's stopping me from destroying this world and leaving? Surely not them. It's me that's stalling the inevitable! I don't want to destroy this place, at least not yet! I've had so much fun here. I love seeing humans slowly destroy their world while they turn a blind eye to it. And all the times they've invaded my territory, the thousands of games of cat and mouse I've played! Every one of them ended in the mouse being torn to pieces. So many memories!
  So, I'll let you choose between two options. Option 1. You have your third song, a great performance from both parties! I even plan to bring a few old friends along as spectators. However, if you lose, the rules change. Those rules? In 24 hours, everything around you disappears! Option 2. I'll grant you the mercy of dying instantly. No third song, you'll be torn apart instantly the old-fashioned way. This way I can take care of business in peace. Take your time and choose wisely...
• Get Out!: After Boyfriend sweeps all three rounds of the rap battle against Cartoon Cat, the cat has no choice but to let Boyfriend and Girlfriend go, as promised. Cartoon Cat grudgingly tosses the young couple out of the ruined mall, muttering, "That's all, folks! ...I guess," before sternly warning, "Don't you ever come back here again."
• Mirror Match: The second half of "That's All Folks!" pits Boyfriend against an eldritch cartoon version of himself, with a Girlfriend equivalent holding the real Girlfriend hostage. Overcoming these is what ultimately makes Cartoon Cat give up trying to stop the couple and just throw them out of the mall to deal with the other Henderson creations.
• Mood Whiplash:
  • Week 1 starts off with Monster, with his Soft-Spoken Sadist voice, presenting Boyfriend and Girlfriend the place he chose for their graves (an abandoned mall). Boyfriend challenges him to a rap battle like he usually does, but Monster is having none of it. Cue Boyfriend doing a Spongebob frown, complete with the "mmwup" sound effect.
  • Monster, having the couple cornered, is about to dig in. Suddenly, out come Cartoon Cat and his, well, cartoonishly happy voice.
    Monster: Third time's the charm! I've got you all alone now, no more games... It's time to finish what I've started. And no one will hear you screa—
    Cartoon Cat: Hey! I'm glad you like my property!
    Monster: Huh?
    Cartoon Cat: *sucker punches Monster in the face, complete with cowbell sound effect*
• Skewed Priorities: Whenever Boyfriend and Girlfriend encounter creepy monsters or humanoids, their first instinct is to rap-battle them with goofy grins on their faces, because who needs survival instincts when you can spit bars?
  Girlfriend: The sky is no longer red. Huh? Hey babe, look!
  *sees silhouette of humanoid*
  Girlfriend: How about we try to rap with that guy over there?
• Slut-Shaming: Downplayed. Luna calls Girlfriend a slut during their argument in the woods, but the insult has nothing to do with the latter's sex life. Rather, it is used to emphasize Luna's dislike of Girlfriend (and by extension, Boyfriend) for challenging Cartoon Cat, being oblivious to what they're dealing with, almost causing an apocalypse, and indirectly releasing cryptids that are chasing her down. Plus, Girlfriend's red dress shows off quite a bit of skin.
• Sore Loser: Cartoon Cat engages with Boyfriend's rap-battling shtick like he's having a jolly good time, but when the cat loses twice in a row, he becomes so salty and red-eyed that he grabs Boyfriend and tries to kill him.
• Suspicious Video Game Generosity: "EVILEYEOLD.json" lacks the mechanic that the proper "Evil Eye" has, but it more than makes up for it with its tripled length (to the point that the timer can't register the rest). And then shortly after the song's gone past the timer, things slowly glitch out and go From Bad to Worse gradually.
• Turn the Other Cheek: Girlfriend is understandably angry with Luna for attempting to stab her boyfriend and calling her a slut, but in less than a minute, she goes from being angry to simply messing with the kid, showing that Girlfriend doesn't bear Luna ill will. The end of Week 2 also has Girlfriend and Luna making up with each other.
• The Unfought: Subverted with Luna, who is the main character in a separate minigame and has her own plotline about hiding from Siren Head and the other Henderson creations, but she becomes the opponent of Week 2's second song, "Hideout", facing off against Boyfriend.
• What Happened to the Mouse?: Monster disappears from the plot after Cartoon Cat knocks him out. He is briefly seen unconscious in a cutscene before "Reruns", but his fate after Cartoon Cat kicks out Boyfriend and Girlfriend isn't revealed.
• What the Hell, Hero?: At the end of "Hideout", Luna calls out both Boyfriend and Girlfriend for not only rap battling her in the midst of danger but also for unwittingly luring Siren Head straight to their location with the noise, which almost kills her if not for Boyfriend challenging it to a rap battle as well.
