Vomitoreum (Video Game)
What has the Gods forsaken?

It came from beyond the clouds.
The Fogbringer. The Vomitoreum.
The Horn of Vomitoreum screamed for seven days...
There were many sacrifices, and failures.
But not you. You are the one, true Nephilem...

Vomitoreum is a retraux First-Person Shooter (with some Metroidvania elements thrown in) developed by indie studio Scumhead Games, one with an eldritch setting and graphics and visuals resembling the artworks of Zdzisław Beksiński, running on the GZDoom engine..

The Vomitoreum, the Fogbringer... a nigh-unstoppable, indestructible eldritch monster from the darkest realms of space whose hunger can never be sated, descends upon earth during the Medieval Ages, devouring everything in its way as a great plague of epic proportions seeped through the Vomitoreum's maw and infects the populace, turning men into monsters and forcing the Masons, the clerics who guards the living with their magic, to cleanse the lands with their Spells of Life in an epic battle that lasts for seven days.

But the Vomitoreum can't be stopped, for it shall return a year later... unless the Masons came up with a new plan. Project Nephilem, meant to create a monster far stronger than Vomitoreum, born via cosmic ash and churning of lost souls from the beyond. And the project yields results... you, the final product of Nephilem, as you travel across the land and venture into the underworld to slay Vomitoreum for good.

Contains similarities to Scorn, a later game also inspired by Zdzisław Beksiński's works but running on modern-day graphics.

The Ultimate Cure. A Warrior of the Masons.

  • Antagonist Title: "Vomitoreum", the name of an Eldritch Abomination entity who afflicted the entire world with its disease that turns living beings into unspeakable eldritch horrors.
  • Artificial Human: You play as one created from magic, a product of Project Nephilem, and as such you're the lone hero destined to defeat Vomitoreum.
  • Black Knight:
    • Fenrir "He Who's Plagued by Truth" is a tall giant with the appearance of a medieval knight, one who's corrupted by the Vomitoreum and a boss who tries smashing you apart with his poleaxe. Beware his Spin Attack that can reach you almost instantly!
    • Umadermadine, the lead worshipper of Vomitoreum and Final Boss, is another knight-based enemy.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Almost every single weapon has this, with the sole exception of the Eldritch Annihilator.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Downplayed by the Eldritch Annihilator which is the only weapon that ever uses ammunition, the very same Embyros also used for healing to be exact, making it a case of a weapon cast from medkits.
  • Darkened Building Shootout: More than one indoor stage, being set in caverns or forgotten mausoleums, is plunged in total darkness where you can only see enemies as a silhouette. In one of these you can't even see your hand onscreen! A particular standout is Void, an area so dark you need to rely on a Light Homonculus that lights the area, and it somehow houses an abandoned subway.
  • Dual Boss: Mildred and Natya, the "Whore Sisters of Concubath", a pair of Fat and Skinny demonic siblings serving Vomitoreum. Mildred the overweight one repeatedly tries to slice you up with her arm-blades besides sending a hail of rocks at you whenever she digs into the ground, while Natya can Beam Spam projectiles and Teleport Spam if she's shot at - it's best to get rid of Mildred first (since she pursues relentlessly and is quite acrofatic, catching up in seconds) before focusing your attacks on Natya.
  • Draconic Abomination: The first boss, Father Sergius the "Great Dragon of Umadermadine" has a vaguely draconic-looking form and head, but its body is completely deformed where the flesh inside its body has swollen through its chest area in horrendous boils (from which it will periodically pluck extra mooks as backup). It does breath fire like a normal dragon, and has spindly wings (that doesn't allow it to fly). The Great Dragon returns in the final stage, degraded into mook-level enemies in large numbers.
  • Eldritch Location: Expectedly, the entire game's setting looks like you're transported into one of Zdzisław Beksiński's artworks.
  • Equipment-Based Progression: Being a Metroidvania game, your character has to collect pieces of equipment in order to access newer areas, ranging from a hammer to dig through certain surfaces, Dash Boots, a Double Jump jetpack, a Morph Ball-like Fetus Ball for going in small spaces, an Acid suit to submerge within liquids.
  • Gas Mask Mooks: There are occasional human enemies in the eldritch landscape, Vomitoreum's worshippers who wears overcoats and gasmasks resembling WWII-era German soldiers.
  • Nuckelavee: Saint Adam "The First Infected" is a disturbingly grotesque version of a common Nuckelavee, resembling a skeletal humanoid figure fused behind what looks like a horse. Groin-first, looking like a man doing... things to his steed. Yes, really.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: You can collect 10 homunculi throughout the game, though they're mostly optional pickups. Mortis would give you his bow as a reward.
  • Heart Container: Health Tanks extend your lifebar by 100HP each, letting you eventually max out at 999HP. There are also Embyronic batteries that extend your number of healing items.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: As it turns out? Umadermadine, the great knight, was the one who unleashed the Vomitoreum upon humanity due to being disillusioned with the Church, serving as the game's Final Boss.
  • Insurmountable Waist-Height Fence: The limitation of the (GZ)Doom engine makes you unable to jump over linedef fences no matter how high you able to jump or dash.
  • Plague Doctor: All the Masons, being alchemists and scientists from the medieval ages, assumes the form of hooded plague doctors in metal avian masks.
  • Power Fist: The first melee based upgrade you can obtain is a Bunker Gauntlet obtained from the resident smith Agnar, allowing you to pummel enemies from up close and save on ammunition.
  • The Power of Hate: Eve's Monument was a human orphan abandoned and left for the dead after she was violated and stripped of all humanity. She was collected by an angel and accepted into the heavens, only for her leftover rage towards humans to manifest her into an Angel of Destruction and the source of the Infection.
"The fire of my hate will burn this world to ash."
  • Red Sky, Take Warning: As a result of Vomitoreum's takeover, the skies as seen in outdoor stages are crimson signifying humanity to be at its end of times.
  • Rewarding Vandalism: The Pilgrim Stones are scattered throrough the game world and can be destroyed, and destroying them all unlocks a room within Azure Kirkyard where the Eldritch Annihilator can be obtained.
  • Save Point: The game strips out Doom's manual saving, having you rely on the Masons to save your progress instead.
  • Secondary Fire: The player would find Petrification Bullets for the pistol and rifle that freeze enemies on hit and can be also shot at liquids to create ice platforms. Crimson Bullets can be found for the Shotguns that shoot homing projectiles.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: Eve's human form, an unnamed orphan girl left alone and hungry in the world, is introduced huddled in this manner. And then a knight offers to help her... only to violate her instead, causing her to assume the same pose again, but this time nude.
  • Was Once a Man: In Eve's flashback near the end, it's revealed she used to be an orphaned human girl, bitter and alone and violated by one of the Teutonic Knights, driving her into despising humanity. And then an angel descends from heaven and offers her a chance to join them; becoming the Queen of Angels, she would instead become the Vomitoreum's herald to infection cast upon humanity...
