24: The Game is a 2006 Third-Person Shooter (with some driving segments) Licensed Game developed by SCEE Cambridge Studio and published by Sony in Europe, Oceania and other PAL territories. The only exception is for North America, which was published by 2K Games for the PlayStation 2. The game was made thanks to a licensing deal with 20th Century Studios. The cast from the 24 series came back to do the voice acting and motion capturing. Sean Callery handled the music, based on the show while the game's script was done by Duppy Demetrius. The game's music was done at Nimrod Studio Orchestra and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London.
The game takes place between the aftermath of Day 2 and prior to Day 3, which is meant to answer things that were not shown in the previous season. The Counter-Terrorist Unit (CTU) is deployed on an operation to scope out a ship anchored at Los Angeles harbor. When a laser trap was accidentally activated, Jack gives the order for CTU tac teams to storm the ship. At the same time, an assassination attempt was reported against Jim Prescott, the Vice President of the United States. An earthquake takes place before the end of the game, forcing US military personnel off their guard at Fort Lesker.
Among those involved in the attack include Max, the arms dealer who survived the event of Day 2 and Peter Madsen, an ex-special forces operator who knows Jack back from his military days.
Despite the mixed reception from critics and gamers, the game was nominated by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences for "Outstanding Achievement in Story and Character Development" at the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.
24: The Game includes examples of the following tropes:
- A.K.A.-47: A lot of the small arms used have fictional names such as the RF Micro for the IMI Mini-Uzi and the AZ 7 Soviet for the AK-47.
- All Your Base Are Belong to Us: A running gag from the show where the CTU building's briefly taken over by Peter after using EMP so that he can break out of his own men, who was previously arrested by CTU.
- Bittersweet Ending: Kate's rescued while Max and Peter were taken out. Jack's shot by Max, but Chase evacs him for the nearest hospital to be treated.
- Bulletproof Vest: Some enemies wear ballistic vests near the end of the game. While one can just shoot them on the chest before they go down, it's much easier just to shoot them in the head to save ammo.
- EMP: A low-level EMP was used by Peter's mercenaries to shut down the CTU building's security system, allowing them to easily raid it.
- Hellish Copter: Peter's mercenaries use helicopter to get around and act as improvised gunships. Jack fights one as a boss and shoots it down.
- Hostage Situation: When the bad guy grabs a civilian for a human shield, you need to shoot them in the head to resolve the situation.
- I Have Your Wife: With Kim held hostage by Peter, Jack's forced to sneak into a building used by the NSA to get equipment to remove encryption from the data the latter needed to get.
- Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Peter raids Fort Lesker after an earthquake takes places in LA to raid it to get the plutonium stored there. He's responsible for arranging explosives planted underground at the focal points to detonate them, causing the earthquake.
- Optional Stealth: Some sections of the game, such as whenever you're playing Kim, would need you to sneak around enemies as you may not have enough ammo to kill them.
- Private Military Contractors: Peter and Max amass an army of hired mercenaries to help them carry out terror attacks in LA.
- Robbing the Dead: Searching the bodies of dead enemies allow you to get more ammo for your small arms in case you're going to run low.
- Serkis Folk: Most of the character movements in the game were done through motion capture.
- Starts Stealthily, Ends Loudly: The first stage started because a CTU tac team assaulter tripped over a laser trap, forcing Jack to start the ship raid.
- S.W.A.T. Team: Like in all 24 seasons, CTU has a tac team that serves as its own SWAT unit. In some levels, they help Jack and other CTU field agents by shooting at the bad guys.
- We Need a Distraction: CTU gets an anonymous tip that sarin's been used at the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. Turns out that it wasn't the case and Peter needed to do it to get most of CTU's agents/tac teams away so that an EMP attack can be used on the CTU building.
