Snoopy (Video Game)
It doesn't stay easy.

Snoopy is a 1984 licensed platform game for the Commodore 64, loosely based on the Peanuts newspaper strip. It was created by Radarsoft and programmed by C. Kramer.

The game stars Snoopy, who progresses through 20 levels of varying difficulty as he moves to the right side of the screen, facing obstacles from lasers to spikes to pits. After clearing 20 levels, the game loops and speeds up, and after several loops, progressing quickly becomes difficult.

This game contains examples of:

  • Difficulty by Acceleration: The game speeds up by 100% every loop, including moving elements, controls, and the music.
  • Flying Face: Flying skulls appear in level 5 and will kill Snoopy on contact.
  • Foregone Victory: Level 16, "No Inspiration", is completely devoid of obstacles and easy to complete even on the absolute fastest (or slowest) speed.
  • In Name Only: Only Snoopy's name and character point to this game being based on Peanuts, as nothing else is from the comics.
  • Kill Screen: If you somehow manage to complete 9 loops (humanly impossible without cheating, as after a few loops, some levels require frame-perfect precision), the speed will overflow, causing it to instead run in extreme slow-motion, taking many seconds to process one frame. While the game is technically still possible to play, it would take hours to actually finish the game again in this state, making it essentially unplayable (if the impossibly-fast earlier levels didn't already scare you off).
  • Laser Hallway: Level 9, "Lasers", and Level 10, "More Lasers," involve Snoopy jumping between lasers that fire from the ceiling and floor at set intervals.
  • No Ending: After completing a set of 20 levels the game simply loops back to the start with an increase in speed, with a Kill Screen after 9 loops.
  • No Plot? No Problem!: Why is Snoopy navigating such dangerous obstacles, and where is he going? Who knows, but it's up to you to help him get there!
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: Getting hit by anything or falling into a pit kills Snoopy, made more difficult by his unorthodox hitbox.
  • Public Domain Soundtrack: The music is a loop of the first couple of bars of "The Entertainer" in different waveforms.
  • Spikes of Doom: Recurring obstacles are moving triangular spikes that Snoopy must jump over.
  • Status Line: The status line lists how many lives you have, the game's publisher and programmer, and what level you're on. Every level has a descriptor alongside the number, such as "Beware, Snoopy" or "Another Level."
  • Unexpected Gameplay Change: Most levels simply involve getting to the right side of the screen, but Level 15 requires Snoopy to jump and catch a hat instead.
  • Writer's Block: Apparently the cause of Level 16 being blank, as it's titled "No Inspiration" in the status bar.
