Just like in the original game, our main character is Dave Miller, a teenager on a quest to rescue his girlfriend Sandy who has been kidnapped by the Mad Scientist Dr. Fred Edison. Together with his two friends (you have to choose two out of the six: nerdy electronics expert Bernard, musicians Syd and Razor, photographer Michael, author Wendy, and Surfer Dude Jeff), Dave has to break into the mansion of Dr. Fred where he resides with his family: his wife Edna, a Battleaxe Nurse, and their military-obsessed son Weird Ed. Upon breaking in, the protagonists find out that the mansion is also inhabited by bizarre non-human creatures: Green and Purple Tentacle (who were both created by Dr. Fred), as well as a sinister sentient Meteor...

The game provides examples of:
- Adaptation Expansion: Compared to the original Maniac Mansion, the game features some new puzzles and an extra ending.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Dr. Fred is not actually evil, just manipulated by the meteor.
- Magic Meteor: Just like in the original game, the main antagonist is a sentient meteor who manipulates Dr. Fred.
- The Man Behind the Man: The actual antagonist is the meteor, who manipulates Dr. Fred into kidnapping Sandy.
- Shout-Out: In the game trailer, Green Tentacle does a full-scale homage to Plan 9 From Outer Space, music and all.
