- After a fun night with way too many drinks, the booze took Robert to the woods, although waking up lost wasn't the only surprise for the night...
Living Dead Outbreak is a retraux-inspired First-Person Shooter/action game made by QUByte Interactive, inspired by George A. Romero movies and classic zombie-shooting FPS games popular in the 90s.
Robert, a young man inexplicably efficient with kicking ass and handling guns, returns past midnight after a drinking binge with his friends, hoping not to piss off his wife Linda for being late... but somehow, after taking a wrong turn due to driving while drunk and getting lost in some woods, Robert then stumbles into a cabin occupied by zombies. And after punching his way through a dozen or so undead, Robert uncovers entire armies of ghouls roaming the woods making a beeline towards the city...
A demo of the game was released on February 19, 2026, with the full game being released on March 12, 2026.
A Bad Night to Get Drunk...
- Ancient Tomb: The cemetery stage inevitably has a path in the chapel's entrance, that leads into a zombie-infested mausoleum.
- And Then John Was a Zombie: And Then Robert is a Super-Zombie Demon... Thing. Being affected with the Demon Heart's powers after killing the monster turns Robert into one of the tentacled zombies, with the bonus ability to Beam Spam energy bolts from all three of his limbs. The last of his assignments is to use his newfound powers to kill all zombies still alive and put an end to the apocalypse, leading to a Bittersweet Ending where a now-monstrous Robert decides to stay in another world to prevent the evil from returning.
- Blatant Item Placement: The game is surprisingly generous with it's ammunition and weapon pickup. While some instances are slightly justified (e.g. zombified militiamen drops bullets) there are still areas where pickups are just randomly floating about, conveniently near approaching hordes of undead. The last in particular grants Robert the best new weapon moments after it starts, and contains ammunition, scythes - the longest-ranged melee weapon - and assorted goodies within Robert's reach, even though that's the Demon Heart's realm where all the evil is spawned.
- Blood-Stained Glass Windows: Among the many zombie-infested locations, one of these is a church. With plenty of undead between the pews.
- Booze-Based Buff: One implied reason why the everyman hero Robert can kick so much ass, the alcohol in his system dulls the fear an average person would have when assailed by the living dead, allowing him to kick ass. However, after becoming sober halfway into the game, Robert can still continue being a badass. The liquor was finally sweating out of Robert's body!
He locked himself inside the church and could finally have a bit of peace...
Right? - Breakable Weapons: Unusually for these type of game, Robert's melee weapons will break after stabbing enough zombies, at which point they'll be automatically discarded and he needs to get a new one or rely on his fists. Then again, most weapons save for his fists can perform a One-Hit Kill on mook-grade enemies (not the powerful Elite Zombie, obviously).
- Cardiac Boss: The source of all these madness is... a giant, beating, floating, demonic heart. Whose arteries functions as Combat Tentacles, dragging Robert into it's domain and trying to pulverize Robert as the last boss.
- Elite Zombie: Most of the zombies are generic, lumbering undead. And then there's the giant skinless zombie towering over Robert, with disproportionately-sized arms on either side where it's left hand is bone-thin while it's right is a humungous claw covered in barbs that it uses to rip Robert apart. This super-zombie is a Recurring Boss fought at the end of more than one stage.
- Energy Weapon: Rather conveniently, after the demon heart drags Robert into it's realm, Robert then obtain the game's most powerful weapon, a laser rifle that vaporizes most enemies in one shot. Very convenient since the game's near it's end.
- Excuse Plot: Drunk guy finds zombies, starts taking names, kill the zombies' boss, end of plot.
- Henpecked Husband: Robert is implied to be one, where the opening narration claims "He better find a way home soon or his wife Linda is gonna beat him up!" ...and this is from a guy who slaughters undead hordes by the dozens with ease.Robert: [after getting abducted to the giant demon heart's realm] You're all gonna pay for interrupting my nightly beating FROM MY WIFE!
- Rise from Your Grave: Not all zombies are walking on the surface; Robert frequently stumbles into packs of zombies whose limbs simply bursts through the ground trying to grab him, but these limbs can be shot off like any regular enemy. These literally ground-breaking undead type appears aplenty outside of the graveyard, too (and can be identified whenever there's a suspicious cluster of holes on the floor - approach with caution and don't stand on these).
- Sinister Scythe: Some farmer zombies carries scythes as weapons. Robert can obtain a scythe from killing a farmer zombie or just find one as a pickup, where it turns out scythes has the longest reach among all melee weapons, can kill most lower-grade mooks in one hit, and target more than two undead at once (though it's still breakable like everything else).
- Space Whale Aesop: The ending screen throws in one of these in the closing narration.Moral of the story: Avoid getting wasted (at least on weekdays)
You never know when a living dead outbreak can start - Stylistic Suck: The game's 90s homage is very apparent, to the point where it deliberately integrated clipping errors in it's graphics - like a zombie getting stuck "in" the floor at one point (who disappears through the ground after it's killed) and enemies on stairs phasing through the surface when gunned down.
- Suddenly Always Knew That: Robert is introduced as this Ridiculously Average Guy who's drunk, and just happens to stumble into a stray zombie pack. Doesn't stop him from kicking all their asses instead of getting devoured on the spot, that's before he got his hands on firearms.
- Sword and Gun: As long as Robert is using a pistol that can be wielded single-handedly, keeping his left arm free, he can wield a lighter melee weapon (knife, ax, etc) in conjunction with firearms to kick all the ass.
- Zombie Apocalypse: This is the possible fate of the world if Robert failed to find what's causing the zombie outbreak and stop it. Turns out it's started by a giant demonic heart, but what summoned the heart is still a Riddle Of The Ages.
- The light rift was destroyed and all the monsters were gone...
