Half-Life: Field Intensity (Video Game)
"Remember: no witnesses."

Half-Life: Field Intensity is a Game Mod for Half-Life (1998) developed by Hazard Team, offering another view of the Black Mesa Incident through the H.E.C.U.'s perspective. The mod is notable for its high level of quality on-par with the original game and its expansions, and can even be seen as another unofficial Half-Life expansion.

Players step into the boots of H.E.C.U. Corporal Stefan Oldfield, a member of the first squads to enter Black Mesa. Overseeing your operation is your radio operator and old friend, Kevin. Your orders are simple: leave no witnesses. The execution, however, will be fraught with far more peril than anyone can have anticipated.

Field Intensity initially released on February 22, 2022, and has received several updates since. As of writing, it is currently on version 1.6, and can be downloaded from ModDB.

Field Intensity showcases the following tropes:

  • Action Bomb: One of the new weapons added in Field Intensity is the Explosive Snark. It behaves much like a normal Snark, but upon death will release a devastating explosion that is even a threat to Gargantuas.
  • Adaptational Badass: Some returning enemies gain a few new attacks to keep you on your toes:
    • Bullsquids can now spit a massive glob of toxin that inflicts a small poison effect.
    • Alien Slaves / Vortigaunts gain the ability to release a shockwave of energy at close range, similarly to the Houndeye and what they could do in Episode Two. They can also (on Hard Mode, only) revive fallen Vortigaunts.
    • Black Ops Soldiers can now throw flashbangs, distinguishable by their cylindrical shape.
    • Zombies now come in an HEV Suited variant, and are a lot tougher to take down (unless you aim for the head).
  • The Cameo: Stefan encounters almost every other Half-Life protagonist throughout his journey, with the notable exception of Gordon Freeman himself.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • "Hazardous Environment" is home to a few of them. The first is that Kevin overhears a Gamma Lab scientist mention the Lambda Team's plan to launch a rocket to stop the invasion, setting up the H.E.C.U.'s occupation of the launch site in "On a Rail". The second has Oldfield encounter an unused HEV suit. After a quick analysis, Kevin discovers that the suits use tracking devices, allowing the H.E.C.U. to track Freeman's movements throughout Black Mesa.
    • During "Birefringence", Oldfield takes part in the assault on the old Teleporter Lab seen in Blue Shift. Once his Engineer cuts through the door, however, a large explosion knocks him out. This is a fun nod to the strategy most players use, since the Engineer takes an incredibly long and obvious time to cut through the door, giving Barney plenty of time to set up a Satchel charge trap.
  • Downer Ending: Is it ever. Stefan gets put through the wringer throughout the second act, between being haunted by the suspected death of his friend on the radio, having to deal with a failed evacuation and the rest of his squad being massacred, then going through the alienating experience of passing through Xen. After returning to Earth, he fights his way through an increasingly hostile and lonely Black Mesa until he comes face to face with Kevin's corpse, and is left with no other option but driving out. After everything he went through, being wiped out by the atomic fireball that engulfs Black Mesa is practically a Mercy Kill.
  • Hostile Terraforming: Stefan personally sees Xen mass warping into the facility during "Weak Force".
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Nearly every weapon from both Half-Life and Opposing Force make an appearance across both of the game's acts, with the exception of the Gluon Gun.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Unlike in Opposing Force, Oldfield unambiguously receives his orders to silence the facility's personnel.
  • Mini-Mook: a new enemy in Field Intensity are miniature Gargantuas. They have all the deadly weapons of their bigger brothers, but are much smaller in comparison (though, they still tower over a human opponent), and their skin is not as bulletproof.
  • We Will Meet Again: Remarked by Stefan after scaring off the Kingpin at the end of "On the Track". Sure enough, the Kingpin returns for a rematch in "The Verge."
