EyeToy: Play (Video Game)
"12 CRAZY GAMES!"
Back of the American box
The first in the EyeToy Play trilogy and the first EyeToy game released for the PlayStation 2. The game was packed in with the EyeToy camera during its first release in 2003. EyeToy: Play is a London-developed collection of 12 games published by Sony. As with later games with the camera, you play the game by moving your body around with the camera watching for it to reflect what's going on in the game, and it will photoshoot high-scoring players who make the list. The games include dancing alongside the younger cast in "Beat Freak", partaking in fighting games of "Kung Foo", giving dirty windows the "Wishi Washi," joining a "Soccer Craze" where you try to put balls to the "Keep Ups", showing who's really the champ in "Boxing Chump," and the list goes on.

But this is not all the games are about; the green, mean Wonton is a maniacal monkey out to ruin your fun, and the Big Bad primate also has a platoon of cronies to help him invade your playtime. Such Mooks include the Robo Bros., ratmen, Ba-Boons, and other mooks who are determined to trash the party. Such games they intrude on include "Kung Foo", where they attack the player on sight; "Plate Spinner", where the Ba-Boons try to interfere with the efforts to keep the spinning plates intact; "Mirror Time", where Big Robo Bro tries to mess up your efforts to save Kieu by tricking you into freeing his Little Robo Bro; and "Slap Stream", where the ratmen kidnap QT and Yumi and risk them getting hit by the player. Now it's up to the player to fight off Wonton and his goons and save the games they try to ruin.

The game was later followed up by an EyeToy: Play 2 and later an EyeToy: Play 3 on the PlayStation 2, with the EyeToy continuing to be used for both games and other games with EyeToy in their name.

EyeToy Play toys around with the following tropes:

  • Big Bad: The main antagonist of the game is the fun-hating green Maniac Monkey Wonton and he alongside his cronies aim to ruin you fun, even resorting to kidnapping one or two of the girls.
  • Damsel in Distress: The three girls all end up in this role at some point.
    • In Mirror Time, it's up to the player to save Kieu after she was pulled into a Magic Mirror.
    • In Slapstream, QT and Yumi get kidnapped by Wonton's ratmen on their way to Kieu's costume party, so it's up to the player to defeat those dirty rats and ensure the two ladies are unharmed.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The old man is never called anything besides the "Oracle".
  • Evil Gloating: The ratmen exit the clouds in Slapstream to taunt their hostages, but this ends up making them vulnerable to being struck by the savior of the girls they've kidnapped.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Kieu is fond of pink flowers and wears their petals inside her hair.
  • Fun-Hating Villain: Wonton is the Big Bad of the game and is out to, alongside his minions, to ruin the fun of the main cast.
  • Green and Mean: Wonton is a green maniac monkey and is out to ruin the fun of the good guys.
  • Hostage Spirit-Link: Hitting the girls in Slapstream will cost you a life.
  • Maniac Monkeys:
    • Wonton is at least monkey-like in appearance and is out to destroy the fun of the main cast.
    • There are the Ba-Boons who help Wonton disrupt at least one game such as trying to ruin the disc-spinning efforts.
  • Mini Game Game: It is a collection of 10+ games designed to work with the EyeToy as it records the movements of the players.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Kieu is the bustiest of the girls and wears a midriff-baring shirt with no sleeves.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Kieu wears pink flower petals in her hair and a pair of wrist bands as well as pink sneakers.
  • Pulled into a Mirror: One of the games, Mirror Time, involved Kieu disobeying the Oracle when he told her not to look in a Magic Mirror and she gets sucked in. It's up to the players to free her by touching the mirrors with her face while avoiding touching the mirrors with Little Robo Bro in them.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: In the Mirror Time game, the villainous Wonton's minion Little Robo Bro got trapped in the Magic Mirror, but the goal for the player is to save Kieu while leaving the little robot trapped as freeing him equates to a penalty.
  • Stupid Evil: As the Oracle notes in Slapstream, the ratmen are not the clever scoundrels they think themselves to be, they always would emerge from the clouds to taunt their hostages leaving them open to being "slapped" by the player.
  • You Dirty Rat!: The ratmen of Wonton are actual anthropomorphic rats and will do his dirty work.
