Etrange Overlord is an Action RPG developed by former Nippon Ichi president Sohei Niikawa's company, SuperNiche, in collaboration with Gemdrops. It is published by Broccoli in Japan and NIS America internationally on March 26, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Steam. Character designs were handled by Shin'ichirō Ōtsuka, most well-known for his work on Re:Zero.

Étrange von Rosenberg has been executed. Accused of plotting to assassinate the king and conspiracy against the royal family, she is labeled a villainess and forced to march to the guillotine by her former fiancee, the prince of Edelstein, where she meets her gruesome end. Upon her death, she descends into Hell where she finds herself at the mercy of the demons who will make her suffer for her life of sin.

At least, that's what they thought.

Those very same demons soon find themselves on their hands and knees, begging for her mercy and a chance to fight by her side. It turns out Étrange is an incredibly powerful user of dark magic who easily decimated every demon who dared to make her submit. Furthermore, she is surprisingly calm about her descent into Hell. In fact, she sees it as the perfect opportunity to build for herself the life she always wanted. And so begins the tale of the one who will turn Hell into her own personal paradise — the gorgeous, elegant, and sweets-loving Étrange von Rosenberg!

The game is broken up into stages where Étrange and her party must fight off enemies from a top-down perspective, some of which have specific objectives beyond just fighting enemies. Key to victory are Lanes, magical conveyor belts on which can be found power-ups that boost abilities or devices like turrets to help turn the tide of battle.

This game provides examples of:

• Berserk Button: Étrange worships sweets; disrespecting them is the only way to make her angry.
• Bishōnen Line: The first demons Étrange meets look like the traditional depiction of the Big Red Devil. Upon giving them the names Cackie, Chuckie, and Chortie and making them her vassals, they become better-looking human-like demons as well as significantly smarter and stronger.
• Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Angelina. Her sweet angelic appearance hides a rather nasty and ambitious personality that is willing to get those who could oppose her killed. Étrange's false charges and execution were set up by her, all while acting sad that she will have to let go of her "precious honorary sister".
• Commitment Issues: When the idea of Étrange getting into a relationship comes up, Étrange rejects it as she feels that she would lose her freedom. While she was originally engaged to the Prince of Edelstein, it was purely for political reasons and a flashback reveals that her relationship with the Prince was very frosty, refusing to do what the Prince demanded of her. When humoring a potential candidate as a spouse, the only person who comes up is Sweetia. Unsurprisingly, when Cat-Smith reveals himself to be the former Overlord Guiltias and asks for her hand in marriage, she declines.
• Cutscene Power to the Max: In gameplay, Étrange fires off Dark Arrows as her normal attack and unleashes a swarm of meteors with her special attack, Meteor. While they are strong attacks that only get more potent after upgrades and Lane power-ups, it pales in comparison to what she's capable of unleashing in cut scenes, being able to duplicate her allies with Legion, increase their strength with Berserk, transform into a dragon, and many more powerful spells. Even Meteor is shown to be much more impressive in cut scenes as she's able to spam the move to pummel enemies and, at one point, a barrage of missiles.
• Defeat Means Friendship: With the exception of her closest companions (Cat-Smith, Sweetia, and Jewel), every one of her allies was at one point her enemy. Upon their defeat, they quickly join her side either due to sharing her love of sweets or fear/awe of her power. Luckily, said allies quickly grow fond of her as they spend time with her and even elect to continue serving her after she loses her power. Downplayed with Angelina. While she refuses to be a real sister to Étrange upon her defeat and requests to be executed, she takes Étrange's words to heart and swears to be a better person in her next life.
• Demiurge Archetype:
  • God turns out to be just the latest ruler of Heaven, and is still a child in angel years. Despite their sheer power, they were easily corrupted by an exiled demon lord and get trounced by Étrange's mecha army.
  • In the third act, Angelina turns out to have supernatural abilities rivaling Étrange's, and has turned Edelstein into a cult of personality. But for all her power, her worldview is disturbingly narrow. It turns out that she has reincarnated one hundred times, and her Soul Form is an Eldritch Abomination representing the aspect of The Judged. Despite harboring the power of a god, she is weighed down by the hatred and resentment of experiencing one hundred bad endings.
• Dub Name Change:
  • Cackie, Chuckie, and Chortie are known as "Heehe", "Kuuku", and "Hyaha" in Japan, named after their Japanese laughs.
  • Cat-Smith is known as "Nekotaro" in Japan. "Neko" is the Japanese word for cat and "Taro" is a common Japanese boy name, so "Cat-Smith" preserves the theme.
  • While Kera and Bera are slight alterations of their original Japanese names (Ker and Bero), Rosa is a significant change from her Japanese name, Su.
  • Overlord Doomaz is known as "Ahobon" in Japan, and in Japanese slang that translates to "rich idiot". The "idiot" part is maintained with his English name "Doomaz" (Dumbass).
• Easy Road to Hell: According to Doomaz, God's angels cherry pick dead souls based on whoever happens to fit their needs at the time, and when their quota is met, they casually throw the rest into Hell without appraising their morality. This is why Sweetia of all people was instantly sent to Hell.
• Family of Choice: Upon defeating Igancio, Étrange takes Igancio in as a little brother, a compromise from his original demand that she become his mother. Ignacio happily accepts and uses his technological prowess to make his older sister happy. Doomaz and even God would be added to the growing family as little brothers to Ignacio, though with more reluctance from Étrange.
• God Is Inept: Whenever God comes up in conversation, Étrange can't help but feel like He is just at fault for her situation as the lazy Overlord she is aiming to depose. After all, for all His omniscience and omnipotence, He seems to let a lot of really bad things slide. Her point is further proven when she arrives in Heaven and finds it being run horribly by an exiled demon. This is later lampshaded by Jewel who's unimpressed that someone with all His omniscience and omnipotence can just brush off the complaints against Him with essentially "I can't do everything".
• Hell Has New Management: Upon arriving in Hell, Étrange casually decides to take over, and quickly succeeds.
• Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Étrange is what happens when you take a complete psychopath, remove most their ability to feel hatred or anger, and replace the hole in their heart with love - and irresponsibly massive amounts of supernatural power. The sheer amount of chaos she unleashes is somehow overshadowed by how ridiculous yet idealistic she sometimes acts.
• Insane Troll Logic: Étrange's thought process is interesting, to say the least. She sees herself as a normal 17 year old girl, but her possession of advanced dark magic and aggressive behavior makes many believe she is a demon in disguise. Though she was executed on false charges, she sees herself as sinless and guiltless. And she continues to make more proclamations as the game progresses, each one earning her strange looks from her vassals. And when that happens, she assumes them to be impressed by her intellect.
• Magnetic Hero: Whether it is due to shared interests, fear of her, curiosity over her power, Étrange is able to draw some of the most unlikely people to her side. Including God.
• Miscarriage of Justice: Étrange is falsely accused of plotting a conspiracy against the crown, which led to her execution. However, when confronted by her allies on taking revenge or clearing her name, she reveals that she ultimately doesn't care about that. She's much more interested in her life in Hell than fretting over the past. It is only after reuniting with Jewel and her parents in Heaven and much urging from her allies that she decides to march on Edelstein.
• The Musical: At the start or completion of an area, the cut scene turns into a musical number, usually with Étrange singing an "I Am Great!" Song. Spotlights will even shine on the characters as these sequences play out.
• Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: A seemingly in-over-her-head princess, her pet cat, her maid, and three low level demons seem like the most unlikely army to conquer Hell, but said princess' sheer force of will and power take them very far. Their army would only get stranger as they soon recruit Hell's head flogger, a mercenary, a boy genius, three Hellhound girls, and a succubus princess. By the end, she manages to add the recently deposed Overlord and even God to her ranks.
• Single-Target Sexuality: Étrange notes that if she has to take a spouse for whatever reason, she'd choose Sweetia, and only Sweetia.
• Sweet Tooth: To say Étrange loves sweets would be an understatement. Whenever she sings, she makes sure to include a lyric about her love for them and even considers them to be the most important part in establishing her happy ending. Keeping her from sweets for too long makes her weaker. Luckily, thanks to her maid (appropriately named Sweetia) who is both loyal and capable of whipping up delicious confectioneries at the drop of a hat, she is never away from sweets for too long. Kera, Bera, Rosa, and Aria also love sweets and bond with Étrange over their love for them.
• Taking Over Heaven: Downplayed. Every so often, when God comes up, Étrange wishes she could punch Him but is ultimately focused on her life in Hell. When she finds out Jewel was sent to Heaven, however, she decides to take up arms against it to get him back. While she does not outright rule Heaven the way she does Hell and later Edelstein, the fact that God joins her side means she has a lot of influence there.
• Theme Naming:
  • Upon the defeat and submission of the three demons who tried to torment her, Étrange names the demons Cackie, Chuckie, and Chortie due to their tendency to laugh as a Verbal Tic. All three are named after synonyms of laughter (cackle, chuckle, and chortle).
  • Kera, Bera, and Rosa are named after the syllables of the Japanese pronunciation of Cerberus — Kero-Be-Rosu.
• Verbal Tic: Cackie, Chuckie, and Chortie in their original demons forms end their sentences with their Signature Laughs, "Hyeheheh", "Hyukyukyuk", and "Hyaha", respectively. Upon their transformation, however, Chortie is the only one to retain their laugh.
