BE-A Walker

Go To

Establish contact with the local population. Easy enough, right? Damn savages weren't interested in talking. They attacked with such madness that even the brave had their nerves rattled. Our technology proved useless against the furious savage horde. Their arrows pierced our armor like it was paper. Only walkers, our elite warriors, offered any resistance against the onslaught. But arrows found weak spots, penetrating cockpit shells and pilots died from the planet's poisonous atmosphere. Your brother's walker was immobilized. Arrows pierced its servo-drives. He couldn't move, but covered the remnants of our retreating detachment for as long as he could fight...
— Major R. Kessie in the game's introduction.

BE-A Walker is a 2020 Video Game first released in Steam.

In a future where Earth is no longer inhabitable due to the last war, humans plan on colonizing a planet known as Eldorado. However, not only the planet's atmosphere towards humans is poisonous, but they are being attacked relentlessly by its alien species, the Thuaaghi, with your brother being the last victim for them before you get to control your own Walker.

BE-A Walker contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Annoying Arrows: Downplayed. While most of the humans died from arrows, the BE-A Walkers are mostly resistant against them.
  • Arrows on Fire: The Thuaaghi would later use flaming arrows to damage the Walkers even more.
  • Black Dude Dies First: Major R. Kessie, while probably Ambiguously Brown, is the game's first human boss, and thus is the first one to die.
  • Driven to Suicide: After you kill Maria Novikova when you sided with Alice Chivington, in the final mission for her side of the story, General Garay mentions that Dr. P. Novikov went into the jungle without a spacesuit when he found out that you killed his daughter.
General Daniel Garay: Yes, that's right. I was informed that he went into the jungle without a spacesuit when he found out you killed his daughter. They say he took a few steps before the Eldorado atmosphere killed him. This is also on your hands, walker.
  • Full-Circle Revolution: After Operation Napalm, no matter what side you're on, half of General Garay's forces betray him to join Alice Chivington.
General Daniel Garay: Attention! The colony is in a state of emergency. Dr. Chivington and her followers have incited a revolt amongst the colonial leadership. Presently half of our combat force refuse to obey lawful orders. Dozens have been killed by the traitors already! This senseless loss of human life was for the sake of dying savages. Dr. Chivington's started a war jeopardizing the colony. The mad scientist calls foolishness humanity and hides her wild mood swings behind a guise of morality. Now for the first time humanity rages war itself on Eldorado, and at we should all be focused on mankind's very survival.
  • Gatling Good:
    • One of the secondary weapons that you can equip to your Walker is a machine gun.
    • Maria Novikova/Dr. Novikov will use a machine gun as their weapon for their boss fight, with the latter saying that just because he has a science degree doesn't mean he can't use one.
  • Genocide Dilemma: In Operation Napalm, you can either choose to side with Alice Chivington to save the Thuaaghi, but at the cost of betraying humanity, or continue working with General Daniel Garay to destroy them.
  • Laser Cutter:
    • The second weapon type for the first slot of your Walker is a Death Ray, unlocked in Operation Napalm, which is a slow recharging, fast overheating, but strong weapon that can kill soldiers in a one blast.
    • Major R. Kessie will use a handheld version of the Death Ray to use against your Walker in his boss fight.
    • The rival Walker pilot will also use a pair of Death Rays for their Walker in their final boss fight.
  • Laser Sight: The primary weapon will use a blue laser sight for the closer lane and a yellow laser for the further one to show which side will be fired on next.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: The other weapon type for the third slot of your Walker.
  • Route Boss: While Major R. Kessie will always join whoever you didn't side with thus serving as the first human boss either way, siding with Alice will result in you fighting against the chief Thuaaghi of sector B-03, Maria, and General Daniel Garay in his personal Walker, in that order, while siding with General Garay will have you fighting against Dr. Novikov, the very same chief Thuaaghi, and Alice Chivington with her stolen Walker.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The BE-A Walkers and Thuaaghi are based on the AT-STs and Ewoks from Star Wars. Equipping your Walker with Cannon AC-2000 and Blaster LG-56M will give it the closest resemblance to an AT-ST though.
    • The fight between humans and Thuaaghi is like a reversed version of the war between humans and Na'vi from Avatar. The Thuaaghi being taller than the humans is also similar to the Na'vi.
    • Eldorado is based on Endor Star Wars Episode 6: The Return of the Jedi due to its forest nature and some of the villages shown, and Pandora from the Avatar film series due to having a similar poisonous atmosphere towards humans.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: What Maria says to you in the final mission for General Garay's side because you killed Dr. P. Novikov:
Maria Novikova: After my father died, I didn't know how I could ever speak to you again. I knew he was to blame for his own death, but I couldn't forgive you. I still can't.
  • Uncertain Doom: After you take down the rival Walker, which is the Final Boss, it's unknown what happened to the pilot inside. It's even more obvious with General Garay if you sided with Alice since she is the last person who isn't Garay to survive because of Dr. Novikov's serum, so it's hard to tell if General Garay died from the contaminated atmosphere or not after his Walker got heavily damaged, especially since Maria is dead by the time it happened.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Major R. Kessie can be considered this to whoever you sided with:
    • If you sided with Alice Chivington, he chooses to continue working with General Garay due to the fact you betrayed the human race. Dr. Novikov also says that Alice really counted on him.
    • If you sided with General Garay, he joins Alice and says that the epidemic is only an excuse to exterminate the Thuaaghi, despite the player's brother saving his life and that he was the one who ordered the delivering of the death rays in the first place.
