Creator Backlash: Crew member Bernie Petterson didn't really enjoy his time working on the show, due to multiple instances of the crew often clashing with each other.
"It was… quite an experience. The show was put together by a bunch of ringers who were top-notch in their field…and also me. I wasn't quite such a star, and I still had a lot to learn, so I was given a kind of minor job on the show. Which made me a little sad, at first. But then I quickly realized that I had dodged a bullet. Because things didn't go as planned. For starters: we were all great friends! We were going to start a show together and everything was gonna be AWESOME! Right? Wrong. All of the top-of-their-field ringers fought like crazy. Best friends became worst enemies. There were arguments, fights, burning resentments…strife. It got kind of ugly. I wasn't really up on their level, so the arguments raged above my head. But it made me very sad. Eventually it ended with a whimper, and I was kind of shaken."
Cross-Dressing Voices: Otto is voiced by Pamela Adlon, who often voices little boys (i.e. Bobby Hill, Milo Oblong — in fact, Otto's voice is closer to Milo Oblong's than Bobby Hill's) or, in the case of Recess and Pepper Ann, girls who look or act like boys (Spinelli and Margaret Rose "Moose" Pearson).
Some episodes have the show's creator Dave Wasson doing some voice work, including random civilians and animals like Mrs. O'Leary's Cow, Billynote the kid who got crushed by the piano in "The Clownfather", and a pterodactyl.
Dueling Works: With Clone High, another animated comedy about historical figures acting in ways you wouldn't expect. Funnily enough, Dave Wasson happens to work on both shows (he's the creator of Time Squad and an uncredited character designer for Clone High).
Keep Circulating the Tapes: Most fans today gain access to the show through illegal downloading from torrents and pirating sites. The series has only received one official DVD release in the United Kingdom (containing the first three episodes). It also isn’t available for streaming like most of the other Cartoon Network shows (past and present). If copyright strikes haven't taken them down yet, one might be lucky to find the entire series on YouTube or dailymotion every so often. The show did appear on Cartoon Network's website as part of its 20th anniversary in 2012, but only in clips, not full episodes. Dave Wasson's website had a Time Squad episode up ("Billy the Baby" — possibly because Wasson considers that episode his magnum opus), but no other full episodes (as of 2020, that website is no longer active).
In April 2020, Cartoon Network briefly added the first episode ("Eli Whitney's Flesh-Eating Mistake" and "Never Look a Trojan in the Gift Horse") to their app for viewing. Soon after the same episode was released on a wide range of other streaming sites, including Apple TV, Hulu, and Sling TV. This, however, was only temporary.
It wasn't until March 2025 that the series was finally available to stream on the Australian version of Max, albeit using the PAL prints and having some scenes being censored.
For reasons unknown, "White House Weirdness" was supposed to air after "Repeat Offender" but was replaced with "Ladies and Gentlemen... Monty Zuma!". It has been speculated that because of the stringent censorship about mocking the U.S. government that was prevalent after the September 11th attacks, depicting The White House as a haunted house would have been in bad taste.
"Floral Patton" and "Orphan Substitute" (the final two episodes) were also held back because Cartoon Network was concerned over complaints about "Orphan Substitute"'s depiction of George W. Bush. However, Cartoon Network aired both episodes as part of a Thanksgiving weekend block in 2003 and some overseas Cartoon Network channels did air the episodes in reruns with no censorship done to it.
Screwed by the Network: The series has a mysterious history about what exactly went wrong. What little records of the show's ratings we have state that Time Squad did rather well for itself, gaining numbers like 5.0 on their premiere nights on the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays block. Buck Tuddrussel's voice actor, Rob Paulsen, has mentioned that Time Squad was a show that got canceled simply because it was in the line of fire during a corporate shuffle. Perhaps the AOL/Time-Warner merger has something to do with it? What's also known is that after getting renewed for its second season in early 2002, the unexpected news broke out that it was canceled. From then on, Cartoon Network had made it their business to run the show into obscurity. They eventually started misplacing new episodes and kept the show on a handful of hiatuses. By 2004, they had given the show a final blow by sending it to the death slot of the early morning hours where it ran for two years alongside Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
The Shelf of Movie Languishment: Season 2 wrapped up production in 2002, but the final four episodes of that season didn't air until 2003.
Shrug of God: When asked on Tumblr by a fan on how Otto became an orphan, Carlos Ramos admitted that he never thought of what placed Otto in the orphanage to begin with. However, he went on to state that he would have focused more on Otto’s backstory and status as an orphan if the show was renewed for more seasons.
The series was originally ordered as a single season of 26 episodes, before being split into two separate 13 episode seasons.
Word of Gay: On the Talkin' Toonspodcast, Mark Hamill and Rob Paulsen crack jokes about how "there was no ambiguity with regard to [Larry's] sexual preference." In fact, Paulsen has made references to Larry's behavior in other episodes of his podcast.
(the main reason isn't known, but it can be speculated that the content would have pushed things a bit too far such as showing two naked people and the religious reference). Also: Tommy Chong (from the stoner comedy duo, Cheech and Chong) was going to be the voice of Adam, but Dave Wasson rejected the choice for being too obvious.
