- The coffee scene turns real melancholy when Vincent and Neil talk about their personal lives; Neil can't afford to have one, and Vincent's is falling apart because he's Married to the Job. They even casually talk about recurring nightmares, knowing exactly what the other one is talking about.Vincent: I have this reoccurring dream. I'm sitting at this big banquet table: all of the victims of all the murders I've ever worked are sitting at this table, and they're staring at me, they have these black eyeballs because they have eight ball hemorrhages from their head wounds, and there they are, these big balloon people, because I found them two weeks after they've been found under the bed. The neighbors reported the smell, and there they are, just sitting there.Neil: What do they say?Vincent: Nothing.Neil: No talk?Vincent: No. They got nothing to say. We all just look at each other.Neil: I have one where I'm drowning. And I gotta wake myself up and start breathing or I'll die in my sleep.Vincent: You know what that's about?Neil: Yeah, having enough time.
- Charlene, without a word, only a simple hand gesture, warns Chris to stay away, and in essence saying goodbye to him forever.
- And before that, Drucker convincing her to identify Chris if he appears, or else her son Dominic would be taken to adoption and have a very difficult life in later years.
- When Neil sees Hanna coming after him and abandons Eady, leaving her completely speechless and broken.

- Lauren's attempted suicide in Vincent's hotel room. The consummate professional, he walks untouched through the death and destruction of modern urban crime with studied detachment. But in Lauren he has a true innocent he can save, binding her wounds and rushing her to the hospital, declaring "Not you baby, not you, those other assholes can kill each other all day long, but not you".
- Donald Breedan's character arc. He just got out on parole and found a job in a restaurant, only for his boss to be a complete jerk who overworks him and steals his pay while threatening to report him. Then Neil proposes him to be Trejo's replacement as the runaway driver in the bank heist, which gets Donald killed in an anticlimatic way after the heist. The poor man only wanted to be a good citizen, but couldn't escape from his criminal past because of a very rotten society.
- Hanna is called to a murder committed by Waingro. He is already exasperated by the gruesome scene, but then the victim's distraught mother pushes her way through the cordon. Hanna restrains her, sparing her the sight of her daughter's battered corpse, then hugs her as she collapses in tears. For all his Rabid Cop tendencies, Hanna is nevertheless a compassionate man, and he clearly feels the woman's pain.
- Afterwards, when Vincent goes back home and Justine asks him what happened, the both of them get into it about Vincent not sharing anything about the job with her, although Vincent is adamant that she doesn’t want to know about many of the terrible things he has seen during his police career and that he has to hold in a lot of his exasperation and anger about all the brutal crimes and death he has witnessed to stay sharp and calm on the job. It might make Vincent seem very closed off and secretive, but sadly he feels this is the only way to keep going in a very mentally and emotionally challenging profession.
- Neil attempting to comfort a critically wounded and emotionally distraught Trejo before giving him a mercy kill.
- Det. Hanna and Justine comforting each other after Lauren's suicide attempt. They manage to reconcile after their previous fight, all the while admitting that their marriage won't work.
- Many of the casualties in the climactic bank heist. Seeing Bosko get taken out with a bullet to the neck (one part of his body that's not protected by his Kevlar) is particularly startling.
- It's kinda sad seeing Cheritto getting shot in the head. It's the only way this would have ended for him, but still kinda sad... If you're not screeching in anger at him for taking a young girl hostage and USING HER AS A HUMAN SHIELD!
- The guards killed in the armored car robbery. Especially the one who infuriates Waingro, his terrified expression makes you feel horrible when Waingro shoots him in the face, and this forces Neil to execute the second guard, and Cheritto to kill the third guard.
