Spiritual Successor in Video Games.

Video Gaming itself

  • The first Video Games (and arcade games in general) can be seen as a Spiritual Successor to various carnival games such as the claw game, shooting ranges and Pinball as you spend little money for one game that is quickly over and in the case of pinball you aim for a high score. It also helps that the only business experience Nolan Bushnell had before founding Atari was from maintaining these at a carnival. However, they're more a spiritual successor to the earlier electromechanical arcade games, at least some of which had a similar cabinet design to those first video games.
  • Modern live-service games can be thought of the spiritual successor to the "episodic" development model that was tried during the mid 2000s. The idea was instead of spending several years developing a game, spend less time to develop only smaller chunk of what was planned. Then use the revenue from previous episodes to fund and develop future "episodes." However, most live service games are now Gacha Games, being funded by people spending money to gain gacha tickets, but otherwise, the development model appears to be what episodic development would've been: shorter, continuous development cycles to drip feed players the content.
