Hallo aus Berlin ("Hello from Berlin" in English) is an educational series made by The BBC and the Goethe-Institut that teaches pre-teens and teenagers basic German. It aired on BBC Schools TV and ran from September 19, 1996, to March 27, 1997, for ten episodes.

The show's live-action segments have six teenagers and others showing their experiences living in Berlin, with animated skits featuring the characters Rolli and Rita in between and a song at the end of each episode. One of these songs, "Was ist dein Lieblingsfach"^note What is your favorite school subject?, due to the trippy visuals and Rolli and Rita's dance moves, caused this otherwise obscure show to experience a sudden rise in popularity in the earlier part of The New '20s.

Troping ist mein Lieblingsfach

• The '90s: Pretty obvious from the fashion and technology featured in the series, not to mention everything being priced in Deutsche Marks.
• Ash Face: In "Essen und Trinken", Rolli looks into a frying pan while melting butter for cooking pancakes, but it explodes and turns his face black. This later happens to both Rolli and Rita in "Ferien und Feste" when they get struck by lightning at the beach.
• Crash-Into Hello: Rolli and Rita first meet when they crash into each other in a tall building during the first episode.
• Does Not Like Spam: In the Rolli und Rita sketch of "Essen und Trinken," Rita asks Rolli if he likes pancakes. Rolli says that he does, but his hesitation and the absolutely disgusted expression on his face says otherwise. Rita doesn't notice this and starts making pancakes anyways.
• Dreadful Musician: Although Rolli and Rita can sing quite well in the song portions of each episode, in their sketches they are hilariously bad at it. In the episode "Freizeit," they sing and play instruments in a music store so badly that it causes destruction, and in the episode "Ferien und Feste" they sing along to the music on their portable radio very poorly.
• Dub Name Change: The show, in addition to teaching German, was adapted into Spanish and French. In Spanish, Rolli Schmidt and Rita Weiß are named Julio Pérez and Julia Blanco, respectively, while in French they are named Juju Martin and Juliette Leblanc. Unique to the French dub is the implication that Juju is just a nickname, as his teacher calls him Julien. Rolli and Rita also have a mutual friend named Johnny, mentioned in the Rolli und Rita sketch of "In der Stadt," who is named Juanjo in Spanish and Jeanneau in French.
• Lovable Jock: PE is Rolli's favorite subject, and in "Gesundheit" he says that he loves football (soccer to Americans). In the removed Rolli und Rita sketch from the episode "Unser Berlin," Rolli is seen kicking around an empty can and narrating it like a sports commentator before Rita approaches him.
• Made of Explodium: Rita's pet snake Zischer detonates after Rolli asks it to add multiple numbers at once.
• Mood Whiplash: The other episodes are pretty silly and upbeat, but the final episode "Unser Berlin" shows some clips of the Nazi era and discusses postwar troubles and the Berlin Wall.
• Passionate Sports Girl: Esther likes playing sports, especially track and field.
• Piano Key Wave: In the Rolli und Rita sketch of the episode "Freizeit," after the two play the keyboard horrendously, the keyboard starts bouncing and the keys start waving on their own.
• Sarcastic Clapping: After Rolli spectacularly fails at bowling in the episode "Gesundheit," Rita sarcastically claps for him and says "Very good. Bravo." before stepping forward to take her own turn.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In the Rolli und Rita sketch in "Familie", after Rita's snake accidentally destroys Rolli's living room, they hear Rolli's mother coming, prompting Rita to leave.
• Series Continuity Error: Within the episode "Familie"; when trying to piece the broken photo frames back together, Rolli notes two separate halves to be of his brother and sister. Later in the same episode, during the song "Das Ist Meine Familie", he says he has no siblings despite establishing earlier that he had two.
• Smoking Is Not Cool: More like "Underage Smoking is Not Cool"^note Before 2007, the smoking age in Germany was 16; In "Schule", Arno (who is 14) is caught smoking in the school bathroom and has to sweep the smoking corner as punishment.
• Token Minority: Esther is the only non-white member of the main cast.
• Theme Tune Roll Call: The opening has all the live-action characters greeting the viewers with "Ich bin [Name]".
• Vox Pops: Every episode except the final one features kids and adults on the street being asked questions relating to the episode's topic such as their favourite foods, what they want for their birthdays, etc.
