There's really no way to prevent it. No matter how careful you are, regardless of one's dedication to personal cleanliness, they're going to get in eventually. And for most ponies, it's a moment of deep gross-out, followed by scrubbing down their entire pantry, kicking out far too much of what's in it, and ending with a regretfully expensive shopping trip to replace what was lost.
But this is Rarity. The situation was unacceptable. And her intention was to take out the problem at the source.
Now if she can just find a way of explaining that to the jury...

- A Fool for a Client: Rarity has a lawyer, but insists on taking the stand herself to explain her reasons. In fairness, this makes sense because she very specifically is trying to get the jury's sympathy. Still, her lawyer tried to talk her out of it.
- Loophole Abuse: Equestrian law allows a jury to let off a defendant who committed a crime for reasons they consider something anypony would have to do — known as ‘the sufficiency clause’. (The most frequent example given is that if you see somepony having a heart attack through their home’s front window and the door is locked, then the cause for breaking in is sufficient.) This is Rarity's defense, as she thinks surely they'll understand how disgusting weevils are. Twilight has to subtly magnify the weevils, but once the jurors see them crawling over their food (and once they get back from running and screaming), they let Rarity off.
