The gang refuse Caine’s newest horror-themed adventure, and, seeking a refreshing change of pace, spend the day working as employees in the fast food restaurant Spudsy's... with the normally meek Gangle as the manager! Gangle gets a major confidence boost when she receives a happy mask that will never break, allowing her to finally assert herself. But as the monotony of the 9 to 5 grinds them all down, she starts to crack in ways her new mask can't fix.

Tropes featured in "Fast Food Masquerade" include:

• Abstaining from Rudeness: Gangle becomes leader of the group for a day after Caine gives them the "adventure" of being employees at a Burger Fool. Jax, as her subordinate, can't insult or bully her like he usually does without facing punishment from "corporate" (Caine). His attempts at snark are all met with either a reprimand from Gangle or no reaction from the other Circus members.
• Added Alliterative Appeal: In the French dub, "The Curse of the Violent Psychopath Butcher", the title of the adventure originally planned by Caine, was translated into "Cauchemar chez le cruel charcutier carnassier" (literally "Nightmare at the Bloodthirsty Cruel Pork Butcher's") – pronounced Cau-che-m-ar chez le cruel cha/ar-cutier carnassier, or translated into phonetics : \koʃ.maʁ\ʃe\lə\kʁy.ɛl\ʃaʁ.ky.tje\kaʁ.na.sje\ . That's 3 repeated phonemes in only 6 words.
• Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Jax got one from the robo hands after he finished watching the training video and was pushed back out to get back to work.
• Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Well, Stupid Sauce in this case, but this trope is nonetheless still in effect with Ragatha, who goes from a polite, inclusive Nice Girl to a lazy, grumpy and barely functioning worker who alienates her fellow Players with her behavior.
• Ambiguously Gay: While intoxicated, Ragatha bitterly remarks that Pomni prefers to flirt with Gummigoo than to hang out with them, and that she'd like someone to flirt with her. It's not clear if Ragatha is hurt that Pomni prefers to befriend an NPC over her, and that she is also lonely on the romantic plane in a general way; or if she believes that Pomni is ditching work; or if she is specifically jealous because she believes that Pomni flirts with somebody else. Ragatha then starts to talk to the Gloink Queen with a large smile, nothing of what she says is heard.
• Ambiguous Gender: The rude NPC customer who demands a stupid burger from Pomni. Their design is just one of the faceless art mannequins and their androgynous voice could belong to either an Obnoxious Entitled Housewife or a Bratty Half-Pint. Given that they're one of Caine's creations, he probably didn't bother to actually assign them a gender or age.
• Ambiguous Situation:
  • Jax plays baseball with Ragatha and Gangle at the start of the episode, and he accidentally hits the ball right at Gangle's mask, breaking it. He admits that he actually didn't mean to do that, and both his expression and tone of voice suggest that he's actually pretty surprised. Whether he was actually just willing to play ball and truly didn't mean to hit Gangle, or if he was just being a lying jackass like usual, is a bit hard to tell.
  • Although the episode leans into the idea that Gummigoo has no memory of his previous encounter with Pomni, his body language following Pomni saying his name could be taken as subtle signs that he at least noticed some familiarity with Pomni, or just a typical unsettled reaction.
  • Gangle's depressed expression and the eeriness of the scene before Pomni snapped her out of it by offering to lock up and let Gangle go home early. It's clear she was not okay and was depressed and miserable working as shift manager in fast food all day as it brought memories of her giving up her dreams as a comic artist. Given her expression, it's unknown if she was about to break down in tears or worse, abstract before Pomni snapped her out of it by offering to lock up in her place and cheer her up a bit.
• Amusing Injuries: Jax shoves Ragatha into a boiling deep fryer, where she is left for about an entire minute onscreen, and she comes out no worse for wear with the exception of a single bandage on her right cheek, which she has taken off by the time of her very next shot after the first and only one wherein the bandage appears. In contrast, a single shot of "Stupid Sauce" to the eye renders her practically incapacitated for the rest of the episode.
• ...And That Little Girl Was Me: While attempting to "re-educate" Jax, Gangle goes on an unhinged rant about an aspiring manga-loving webcomic artist forced to give up their dreams and accept working in fast food. The end all but explicitly states she's talking about herself.
• Anti-Climax: It's set up early on that any of the employees who perform poorly will receive a punishment from Caine. In the end, it seems as though Gangle is actually gonna be the one to receive a poor performance rating, due to clocking out early and having a manic episode after her shift. Indeed, Caine calls her out on this, only to give her a B+ review anyway, the same rating everyone got, meaning no one ends up getting punished.
• Arc Number: The number 57 shows up again.
  • In the background of Zooble's room, there is a die showing a 5 next to two stacked dice showing 6 and 1.
  • A hot dog with mustard is advertised as costing $57.57.
  • Caine got two toy cubes forming the number 57 on the shelf in his office.
  • The registration of car parked outside at breakfast is MR 57 AMH.
  • Pomni hears that Orbsman's order was (apparently) a "number 57" from the menu. His spoken dialogue can be heard as "the classic number 57 value meal".
• Armor-Piercing Response: Gangle gets this twice, each time with an audible "TINK!" in the background to symbolize her happy facade suddenly cracking.
  • When she tries to motivate Jax into being a model employee with a "can-do attitude", he says something that causes her to try The Ludovico Technique on him:
    Jax: I like you better when you're sad.
  • Since she's still too high off of Stupid Sauce, Ragatha is unable to carefully watch her words as Gangle prods at her to keep making burgers:
    Ragatha: No offense, but you're kind of annoying when you have your happy mask.
• Art Evolution: The scene of Jax returning from his "Employee Reevaluation" is slightly changed from when it was first showcased in "POMNI WAKE UP TIME TO GO ON AN ADVENTURE". In particular, the scene has more of a darker color scheme and the window in the teaser depicts an interior area of Spudsy's, while the final product simply shows an outdoor parking lot. The hand that pushes Jax back to work is also noticeably bigger and doesn't pat him on the head for as long compared to the teaser.
• Asset Actor: Among the denizens of Spudsy's are Orbsman, Gummigoo, Max, Chad, and the Gloink Queen as well as her spawn, tying into Caine's habit of reusing NPCs for certain adventures mentioned back in the second episode.
• Attack of the Monster Appendage: A giant pair of gloved Four-Fingered Hands grab Jax and pull him away for additional employee "training" when he proves to be non-compliant. Afterward, one hand pushes him back to his work post and gives him a pat on the head.^note The animators actually used the hands from Kinger's model, resized.
• Bait-and-Switch:
  • After Jax points out the clock on the wall might be broken since its been stuck on the same time all day, Gangle starts going on a rant (taken straight from The Lighthouse as a Shout-Out) that implies Spudsy's might actually inflict some kind of Time Dissonance... and then Gangle's wristwatch goes off, making her realize the clock actually is just broken.
  • The NPC customer who orders the Stupid Burger does so in a way that sounds like a Bratty Half-Pint making fun of the restaurant in an extraordinarily immature way. It soon becomes clear that they really are ordering something that's on the menu.
• Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Jax openly states his distaste for Orbsman, Gangle promptly berates him... for not waiting until after the customer has left.
  Gangle: [quietly; strained] Never say you hate the customer while the customer is still here. [casually walks away while looking at Jax] We wait until after hours for that.
• Bait-and-Switch Comparison: Near the end of the shift, Zooble tells Gangle that when Ragatha comes off, she may need a designated driver. Gangle mutters why they're asking her, for she has to close the place. That's before Zooble clarifies that they are the one driving Ragatha home, and was asking when Ragatha's work shift ends.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: The players asked for a normal adventure with no trauma or violence, which Caine was happy to oblige. But going through a mundane and boring adventure means there is nothing distracting them from the fact they are still a dysfunctional mess who have no idea how to work together as a team. Gangle in particular was the one who OK'd the fast food suggestion, yet ended up becoming so put upon and stressed out that she eventually reaches catatonia until Pomni snaps her out of that state.
• Behind the Black: Gangle goes out the back door and does a muffled Cathartic Scream... then the camera suddenly turns to reveal Pomni was standing there watching her, having gone out to take out trash.
• Beneath the Mask: Pun aside, this seems to be a Central Theme in this episode regarding the metaphorical masks the characters wear and how circumstances force them to reveal their true emotions underneath.
  • Gangle gets a new happy mask from Zooble which she accepts. At first, it seems to work, with Gangle acting surprisingly more confident and cheerful than she usually is. However, this new mask turns out to be only skin deep, and (audible, yet invisible) cracks begin to show as having to deal with both the responsibilities as a manager and also negative comments from Jax and Ragatha who didn't like her any better that way. Pomni tries to reach out to Gangle when she sees how upset she is, but Gangle chooses to brush her off and keep acting like nothing is wrong.
  • Ragatha is normally kind and caring to her friends, but getting a dose of Stupid Sauce causes her to lose control of her inhibitions, becoming quite lazy and rude to them. She says things that she normally suppresses, such as how she finds Zooble to be a grouch, claims Gangle is annoying when she is wearing her new happy mask, and even admitting to Jax that she doesn't want him to hate her, but still does hate him.
  • Jax tends to act like a cocky and playful troll, bullying and taunting the other players because he thinks he can get away with it. However, being forced to work under his usual target Gangle and forced to play by the rules working at a boring fast food restaurant grinds him down until he starts acting more cynical and worn-down. He doesn't bother bullying the others like he normally would, passes by Ragatha (lying on the ground) careful not to step on her and even starts to act cordial with Pomni upon being driven to his wit's end, which throws her off.
  • Zooble presents a detached and cynical attitude to the other players, but this episode shows they are more caring and considerate than they let on. They try to help Gangle by giving her a new Happy Mask, has a concerned look on their face as they watch Gangle walk off after hearing a hurtful comment from Ragatha, sticks around the adventure longer then they have to so they can help an intoxicated Ragatha get home safely, and then at the end of the episode where they reach out to Gangle who has isolated herself from the others out of fear of driving everyone away, only for Zooble to reassure her that they want her around which cheers her up more genuinely.
• Beware the Nice Ones:
  • Gangle uses her authority as manager of Spudsy's to make everyone follow her demands, with Jax facing the major brunt of it. She threatens to have Caine subject people to a punishment for mediocre performances at the end of the day to try and get Jax motivated, and when that isn't enough, she has giant hands drag him off to a secluded space to try and recondition him with employee re-evaluation videos.
  • Normally sweet Ragatha yells at Jax for breaking Gangle's mask again at the beginning of the episode.
• Bizarre Taste in Food: Justifiable, as Caine is an AI and so only has theoretical knowledge of human food, and generally when it comes to reproducing it, he lets Bubble cook. Pause the video; the posters advertising the dishes show strange variations of dishes actually offered in McDonald's-like fast food restaurants, like a hamburger called "The Slab" that is made of a huge pile of minced meat between two buns and sold for only 31¢, or an ice-cream machine that produces "ice bean".
• Black Comedy: Jax drops Ragatha head-first into a boiling fryer. Player invulnerability aside, it is as painful as it sounds. But Jax and Gangle completely ignore her for a long while, and the scene cuts off.
• Blithe Spirit: Gangle's new sturdy "happy" (read: manic) mask lets her act like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl to the rest of the cast, and a major Deconstruction of one; all her enthusiastic efforts to manage everyone else's roles as employees causes Jax and even Ragatha to admit that they find this energetic side of her to be more annoying than helpful. This "happy" mask reveals her to be much less mentally well than she appears and drains her until she can no longer keep up the façade by the end of the adventure.
• Bottle Episode: Most of the "adventure" takes place in the same few rooms of a fast food restaurant (largely the kitchen and the parlor), forcing the gang to confront each other and the mundanity of their situation.
• Breaking Old Trends:
  • The trailer for the episode doesn't contain the traditional Leitmotif for the show in any capacity. Even the trailer for the pilot had one.
  • The adventure's title ("An Honest Hard Day's Work at Spudsy's Restaurant Chain") doesn't have as much Added Alliterative Appeal as the last three. It's also not the title of the episode like the last two.
  • This episode marks the first time Caine's adventure is denied and another one is requested.
  • This is the first episode where a cast member other than Zooble doesn't participate in one of Caine's adventures, with Kinger choosing to opt out so that Caine can force Zooble in.
  • Caine appears in person during an adventure that's not in-house for the first time, acting as the upper manager of Spudsy's who receives Gangle's reports and evaluates the players' job performances after the shift ends. Before that, he was entirely absent during most of "Gather the Gloinks!" until he came to intervene in Pomni getting into the void and take care of the abstracted Kaufmo and injured Ragatha, he had a stained-glass window made in his image in the Candy Canyon Kingdom, and he provided offscreen narration and instructions at the initial path selection part of "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor".
  • The episode's adventure is the first time Pomni isn't separated from the main group and given a particular focus. She also tries to give a small heart-to-heart talk to help Gangle, but the latter immediately turns it down, showing that there will have to be other ways for the characters to develop and/or confront their issues from now on. It's also the first episode where Pomni doesn't lose her mind or have some sort of breakdown.
  • Jax finally gets something resembling a Pet the Dog moment in this episode when he asks how Pomni's doing, though it comes after he's reached his wit's end having to put up with Gangle.
  • Jax doesn’t break the fourth wall in this episode.
  • This is the only episode where there is no swearing. This might be a partial reason for the episode getting labeled as "made for kids" by YouTube in late March 2026.
• Break the Haughty: Jax is unable to break Gangle's new mask in this episode, and after being given the power of a fast food manager, Gangle holds the idea of enduring a serious punishment from Caine over his head if he doesn't do a good enough job. When he tells her he prefers being around her when she's sad, Gangle sends him to a dark restraining space and subjects him to a (presumably) traumatizing employee training video she somehow made in less than a day.
• Breather Episode: Invoked. After Pomni asks to not do another horror-themed adventure, Caine abides the request to do something more "normal", resulting in the cast working at a fast food restaurant. Compared to the previous adventures, there's much less excitement and the adventure actually follows the job without any major hitches. It's deconstructed when the dreary and monotonous nature of the job fails to distract them from their personal baggage, leading to the players (except for Pomni) quarreling among each other and Gangle getting increasingly driven to her breaking point.
• Brick Joke:
  • When Caine pulls the suggestion box off the wall to decide the day's adventure early in the episode, causing it to spring a leak for no reason, Jax backs out of the way as the water forms a puddle where he was standing. At the end of the scene, Jax is the last one to step into the portal to Spudsy's... though not before slipping on said puddle and landing flat on his face.
  • When Jax pointed out that the clock is broken, Gangle goes on a rant about the never-ending shift before realizing that the clock is broken. Later when it was time for Jax to leave, the clock looks different meaning that Gangle did replace the broken clock.
• Brutal Butcher: Discussed but ultimately Averted. When Caine tells the players that they'll be going on the "Curse of the Violent Psychopath Butcher", which features "human meat stuck to the walls", Pomni asks that they at least do an adventure that is not horror based, given what she suffered from last episode. Zooble agrees with her after hearing what happened.
• Brutal Honesty: Thanks to the effects of the Stupid Sauce, Ragatha isn't mindful enough to filter her thoughts when she's around others. She frustratedly claims that Pomni would rather spend time with an NPC than with the rest of the human players, calls Zooble out for their grouchiness, notes confusion at how she feels like the more responsible person in the group overall yet got passed over to be manager, and even says she finds Gangle's new Happy Mask side annoying right to her face. She even lampshades the trope after that last one:
  Ragatha: Wait, is that mean to say?
• Bullying a Dragon: Defied by proxy when Gangle calls Caine to request horrible punishments for any Spudsy's employee who doesn't do a good job, which was done specifically in response to Jax trying to cause trouble during the shift. This gets it across to him that he should really know better than to set off Caine just because, even indirectly.
• Burger Fool: The episode's adventure takes the circus players, minus Kinger, to the riveting world of minimum-wage fast food labor, menial tasks, pushy bosses, demanding costumers, and soulless corporate branding. Gangle's motivational video, where she goes on a less-than-hinged rant about giving up your dreams of creativity because wage labor is all you're actually good at, implies that she was stuck in a similar dead-end service job in real life.
• The Bus Came Back: What Ragatha said at the end of "Candy Carrier Chaos!" about Caine sometimes reusing NPCs comes full circle here with Gummigoo and his buddies Max and Chad coming back, though they sadly don't remember Pomni from the previous adventure. The Gloink Queen also returns as a "vehicle" driving past Spudsy's, hilariously enough as a near literal example with Jax wondering if the Gloink Queen can be called a bus.
• But Thou Must!: When Zooble attempts to yet again avoid going on the day's adventure, Kinger offers to sit out this time. Caine then drops Zooble down a Trap Door, forcing them into join the others.
  Caine: You can shut up now!
• Butt-Monkey: Despite Gangle's stress as manager and Jax's misery as an employee, the Oscar for most abused victim in this episode goes to Ragatha. She gets into a fight with Jax for his bullying ways yet again after trying to teach Gangle how to throw a softball, she's tossed into a fryer by Jax with no one lifting a finger to help her, and she gets high on Stupid Sauce through no fault of her own, leaving her in a drunken stupor for the rest of the episode.
• Bystander Syndrome: Gangle reprimands Jax for shoving Ragatha into the deep fryer, but makes no effort to pull Ragatha out of the boiling oil.
• Call-Back:
  • Pomni describes the events of the previous episode's adventure to Zooble, with Zooble exasperatedly asking Caine why he thought that would be something they're interested in.
  • In the last episode, Kinger told Pomni that even if he ends up forgetting about their heart-to-heart moments and regresses back into insanity, the most important thing is that she'll be the one to at least remember, and that she should cherish whatever memories they've made. Following that advice, she ultimately decides to let Gummigoo leave, facing the idea that he's truly forgotten about their encounter and prioritizes the time she's spending with the rest of the cast.
  • Another thing Kinger advises Pomni during the previous episode is to cherish and appreciate the people around you, and that the worst thing you can do to someone is make them feel unwanted and unloved. Pomni further practices Kinger's advice by offering to close the shop in place of Gangle when noticing her depressed and overwhelmed state, allowing her to end the adventure early and get rid of the plastic mask. Also, when Gangle separates herself from the others out of fear that her attitude while wearing the plastic mask made everyone else not want to talk to her anymore, Zooble reassures her that they still like talking to her, it's ultimately not a big deal that new mask didn't work, and invites her over to the couches so they can enjoy her current drawings. Both of these moments of kindness from her fellow players reassure Gangle that she has people who care about her within the Circus, which improves her mental state.
  • Like her time with Gummigoo and Kinger, Pomni sits down with Gangle in an attempt to open up and comfort her. Gangle, however, defies this by putting her new comedy mask back on and going back to work.
• Cathartic Scream: During her break time, Gangle removes her manic mask and unleashes a muffled shriek, then notices that Pomni is also there disposing of the restaurant's garbage.
• The Chains of Commanding: Caine decides to appoint Gangle as the manager at Spudsy's as she worked as a fast food shift manager in her pre-Circus life, a role Gangle did her best to fulfill with confidence. However, a combination of the tediousness of the job and having to deal with uncooperative employees like Jax and Ragatha pushes her to the breaking point.
• Character Development:
  • Pomni has become much more confident compared to the last three adventures, being the only player who's not broken by the dead-end job, having the courage to seek closure with Gummigoo, and confronting Gangle about the latter's issues and offering to close up shop for her to allow Gangle to rest for the night.
  • Gangle is slowly reduced to a manic-depressive wreck throughout the episode, but the emotional support that Pomni and Zooble provide does give her just a little more confidence in herself after all is said and done, especially once she gets rid of the unbreakable comedy mask the latter gave her at the start which turned out to do more harm than good for her. She takes responsibility for leaving her shift early due to almost reaching her Despair Event Horizon during Caine's performance review of her, and the episode ends with her having more appreciation of those who care about her, accepting Zooble's invitation to rejoin and share her art with her friends.
• Chekhov's Gag: At the start of the episode, Ragatha tries to teach Gangle how to pitch in softball with an underhand technique, which ends up breaking her Comedy Mask when Jax (maybe accidentally) smacks the ball into her face. When Gangle clocks out of her shift at the end, Gangle uses an overhead throw to get rid of her new plastic Happy Mask by tossing it far into the night sky.
• Comically Missing the Point:
  • As a manager, Gangle chides the gang for infractions like insulting patrons or possibly huffing paint. But less so for doing these things to begin with; she has more of a problem with the fact that they didn't bother waiting to do such on their own time, like during after-hours or with an approved break.
  • Then there's this conversation between Gummigoo and Chad:
    Chad: Aw, wait — I forgot to ask for a kids meal toy!
    Gummigoo: You're not a kid.
    Chad: Oh yeah! An adult toy then?
    Gummigoo: ...Ehh, I don't know about that one, mate.
• Commonality Connection: Gangle and Zooble have a bonding moment over their inability to feel comfortable with themselves and how it's represented in their avatar gimmicks. This is what lets Zooble find a new mask for Gangle to test out, sourced from their box of parts.
• Company Cross-References: There are a few references to Murder Drones, the Glitch Productions show that preceded The Amazing Digital Circus.
  • A third book on the shelf in Caine's upper management office is titled "Massacre Droids".
  • In the German dub, the Gloink Queen refers to three of her children as Uzi, V, and Cyn.
• Continuity Nod:
  • When Gangle calls Caine early in the episode, his desk has drawings of bees on it that look quite similar to the one he drew for Zooble in "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor".
  • During the "Lunch" cutaway, Gummigoo and his crew are shown to have arrived at Spudsy's in the same syrup truck they were driving in "Candy Carrier Chaos!" It also still has the spikes embedded in it from the pursuit that happened in their debut.
• Crying Wolf: When Jax knocks Gangle's comedy mask off in a game of baseball, he immediately and sincerely says it was an accident, but this doesn't register with Ragatha, who reads him the riot act over it. Given all the times Jax has bullied Gangle and the others, it's hard to blame her for assuming the worst.
• A Day in the Limelight: Gangle is the focus of this episode as the manager at Spudsy's, and conveniently, with a new mask to apparently go with it. We get a glimpse into what life could've been like for her since she used to be a shift manager in her original life at one point, and some of her backstory and insecurities are on display. One of the more notable cases of this is when she goes off on a tangent about how unrealistic a career in making a manga-inspired webcomic would be so as to encourage an unenthused Jax to focus on his minimum wage job.
• Death of Personality: Gummigoo evidently has no memory of Pomni, which is a given considering that Caine was just reusing his asset for the adventure. Although, it turns into a bit of an Ambiguous Situation given his reaction and body language following Pomni saying his name without being told what it was, making it unclear whether he vaguely remembers Pomni or is just flat-out confused.
• Deconstructed Trope: This episode deconstructs the Breather Episode. Unlike the first three, the adventure this time is something much more mundane — working in a Burger Fool fast food restaurant. It happens after Pomni requests they avoid something crazy after the last adventure, and spurred on by Gangle asking if they could specifically do "something normal". However, the dreary and monotonous nature of the job fails to distract anyone from their personal baggage, leading to the players quarreling among each other, becoming hostile, and driving Gangle to her limit.
• Despair Event Horizon: Near the end of the episode, Gangle nearly crosses it after the mundane adventure she asked for put her under so much pressure (not helped by the other players being uncooperative for whatever reason). Luckily, Pomni notices her depressed state, and offers to close the restaurant herself so Gangle can have time to rest.
• Didn't Think This Through:
  • Zooble decides to try out a spatula-shaped arm to work the grill, only to immediately burn their hand on the grill because with the arm connected to their body, they can still feel pain from it. When they next appear, they're holding a real spatula in their spatula hand.
  • Gangle was more than happy to take on the role as shift manager for the fast food adventure, and it's even implied she was the one who wrote it in the suggestion box as she wanted a "normal" adventure. She gets her wish but slowly becomes miserable as the experience just reminds her that she hated working in fast food (as it reminds her she gave up her dreams of becoming a webcomic artist) and becomes depressed from the experience to the point it's implied she was about to abstract had Pomni not snap her out of it.
• Does This Remind You of Anything?:
  • Whatever is in the Stupid Sauce causes Ragatha to act high and/or drunk, which are usual violations while on a job for ethical and safety reasons. As people who have worked in the service sector can attest to, especially in fast food, there's typically at least one stoner who's high on the job, and Ragatha exemplifies the frustrations that come with it.
  • Gangle wears a new plastic mask in this episode. While wearing it, she acts very chipper, to the point of mania.
    • How she acts with the mask feels a lot like someone trying a new antidepressant medication that ends up not working for them. A lot of her behavior is reminiscent of someone experiencing the energy-boosting effects of antidepressants but not the mood-boosting ones which makes her at first seem like she's doing better when internally she feels worse than before. Zooble's line towards the end of the episode calling the mask a bust and telling Gangle that they can try something else also feels very reminiscent of assuring someone they can try a different medication to find one that works.
    • The mask allows her to appear happy. However, it's made abundantly clear that it does nothing to help her actually stay sane. When she steps outside, she takes off the mask and screams in frustration. Thus, the mask can easily be read as a metaphor for neurodivergent people who have to "mask" to present themselves as something they're not to the outside world.
  • Once time passes to the point of closing, everything around Gangle goes dark around her, to the point that even closing her eyelids sounds and feels heavy to her. This is a G-rated way to show someone with suicidal thoughts.
• The Dog Bites Back: After all the bullying she suffered from Jax in previous episodes, Gangle takes advantage of her new, indestructible comedy mask by finally standing up to him, bossing him around the place, and giving him many exhausting tasks. She also makes sure that he can't pick on the other employees by threatening to sic Caine on him if he does, or underperforms for any other reason, preventing him from causing trouble with anyone else, either. And when he bluntly tells her that he likes her better when she's sad, she forcibly puts him through a "reevaluation" process that thoroughly traumatizes him.
• Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Discussed by Zooble when Jax sees Zooble taking their job seriously, saying that they don't want to be punished by Caine for doing a poor job. When Jax argues that Caine won't do anything malicious, claiming it's "not in his nature", Zooble points out that the only thing holding Caine back is that he likes the players, and warns Jax not to push it. Given that Zooble was brutally honest with Caine in the previous episode that nobody likes his adventures which nearly caused him to destroy the entire circus, they know that Caine has a much nastier side to him and would rather not upset him at the risk of suffering a Fate Worse than Death. Granted, Caine's actions didn't appear to be malicious or by design, with the effects of his Freak Out on the circus appearing to be far more like a computer glitch than any sort of threat, but given the extent of his control over the place, who's to say he wouldn't purposely cause terrible things to happen to those who genuinely displease him?
• Double-Meaning Title:
  • "Masquerade" can refer to a mask party, and can also mean keeping up false pretenses, fitting for a Gangle episode.
  • Although the English usage of the word "masquerade" comes from the French "mascarade", and that both are etymologically related to the French "masque" (mask), the title of the French dub is Bas les masques au fast food. "Bas les masques", literally "put down the masks", was historically the term used to mean the end of a masked ball, the moment when participants were forced to reveal their faces, and is now the equivalent of the English expression "drop the act". Literally, it refers to Gangle throwing away her new comedy mask by the end of the adventure, and metaphorically, it is about how Gangle is forced to drop her false positivity if she wants to heal.
• Do Wrong, Right:
  • Gangle tells Jax not to insult the customer while they're still ordering at the restaurant, then quietly adds that it's better done after hours.
  • Zooble asks Gangle to confront Ragatha since she's been acting weird and claims she might've "huffed paint or something". Gangle mostly takes offense due to Ragatha not waiting for a designated break to huff paint on her own time.
• Drunk Driver: Discussed by Zooble when they tell Gangle that Ragatha's going to need a designated driver (that being them) when she goes home from work due to her still being high off of Stupid Sauce.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: This episode shows that the Gloink Queen loves her Gloink children and is a normal mother to them. She also has names for all of them, though the only ones actually named on-screen are Blumby, Skethers, and Leotthew.
• Everyone Has Standards:
  • Jax actually outright admits him smashing Gangle's comedy mask at the start of the episode was a genuine accident on his part, though as usual he isn't actually all that apologetic for it. Furthermore, he becomes so agitated and numbed from Gangle's orders that he ends up turning to Pomni and asking how she's doing, showing he actually is able to care about others are more than just victims for his merciless jackassery to some degree.
  • Zooble wondered what the Mildenhall Manor adventure looked like and when Pomni explained what she and Kinger have been through, Zooble was not pleased.
    Zooble: [to Caine] Why did you think I would like that?
  • While Gangle was the one to request to Caine to have a horrible punishment awaiting any employee who does a lousy job, she only did it to get back at Jax for being a Jerkass and likely was getting payback for all the times he bullied her in the past. When she sees Ragatha under the effects of the stupid sauce and not being able to properly work, she did try to help and encourage her to work since she truly didn't want her friends to get in trouble and might have regretted lumping them in together when she tried to use Caine to spite Jax.
• Eye Scream: Ragatha gets an eyeful of Stupid Sauce. It ends up making her, well, incredibly stupid as it takes hold.
• Eye Take:
  • After Ragatha starts tripping from the Stupid Sauce in her eye, she looks at a horrific vision of Gangle with a Nightmare Face and stares back with eyes wide open. This is then partially subverted when Ragatha's high makes her laugh it off right after.
  • When Gummigoo tells Chad he shouldn't be asking for a kid's meal toy since he isn't a kid anymore, Chad agrees and thinks it'd be better to ask for an adult toy instead. Gummigoo's (and Pomni's) eyes briefly widen upon hearing this before he shuts that idea down too.
• Fictional Counterpart:
  • Spudsy's is an obvious stand-in for McDonald's. Notably, its logo specifically uses the color scheme and design elements of McDonald's as it was in 1995, befitting the show's '90s computer game inspirations and aesthetics.
  • Albert Spudsy, the founder of Spudsy's, is represented in a cardboard cutout artwork with an identical aesthetic to Colonel Sanders in the logo of KFC.
• Foreshadowing:
  • When Ragatha gets high on Stupid Sauce, she sees a dark world with Gangle displaying a Slasher Smile. It shows what Gangle will become over the course of the episode under the pressure of managing a fast-food restaurant and what this environment evokes to her on a more personal level.
  • In Gangle's training video, she guesses the viewer has dreams of becoming a webcomic artist, only to mock that dream for being unrealistic. Even without the knowledge of her hobby from Gooseworx's Q&A, it's easy to see she was psychologically projecting her own issues for a moment. In the end, it's shown that Gangle is a great artist.
• Foul Fast Food: Spudsy's is a jab at the price standards and food safety of fast food restaurants. The hamburgers cost about half a dollar or even less, there's a hot dog with apparent "extra bread" at a price of 57 dollars, and a single pickle box costs 70 dollars. The restaurant sells Stupid Burgers, hamburgers with a sauce that acts as a G-Rated Drug. One of the other hamburgers, The Slab, is apparently made from human meat, and the Sour Cream in a Cone is a batch of expired sour cream "left out to aerate for 30 hours". The kitchen's fridge can only be set at the temperature of 5.8ºC, which is in the temperature zone where bacteria can grow in the refrigerated food.
• The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: In-Universe. While Gangle's training tape initially just seems to be a Show Within a Show, when the tape asks Jax if he's smiling and he answers with "no", the tape reacts with "Why not?" showing that it was somehow listening to him, and then the tape attempts to perform reevaluation on Jax while grabbing him with robotic limbs and forcing him against the screen to make eye contact with the Gangle on the screen — who is looking right at him.
• Freeze-Frame Bonus:
  • Jax, fittingly, didn't write his name on his tag. Instead, it says "I don't care".
  • Caine's bookshelf has a few books of interest, including four on Gloinks, as well as books titled "Egg", "XDCC", "MATPAT THEORY", and "MINDFREAK" (presumably named after the A&E series starring Criss Angel). He also has a few "cool bees" drawn onto some of the papers on his desk.
  • On Pomni's cash register, there's a sticky note with login credentials for the restaurant's Point-of-Sale system. Another sticky note with the same message can be seen in the drive-thru section where Jax works in.

  • When Gangle calls Caine, on her telephone, he is nicknamed "Da BOSS". His desk also has drawings of bees on it, which looks a lot like the one he drew for Zooble in "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor".
  • When Ragatha prepares the Stupid Burger, behind her is an extremely tall hamburger called Mega Mega Stack mostly made out of patties with a few occasional ingredients in between.
  • There's a picture of buff Ragatha on the bulletin board.
  • Written on a whiteboard in the workplace is a series of numbers for "veg delivery", reading "3214568987".
  • The C&A logo can be seen on Caine's computer, and on several boxes of ingredients in the restaurant kitchen.
  • Caine hung three frames depicting Utah Teapots in his office. He also has one of those teapot on his shelf.
  • When Caine gives Gangle a "performance evaluation" at the end, he hangs her picture with the rest of the gang's. They all got B+ ratings... except for Kinger, who got an A+ despite not even being involved in the adventure. And for some reason, he's riding a bull in his photo.
  • There are a few specific references hidden in Caine's glitching, including a Walk Like an Egyptian-style pose, the memetic "Family Guy death pose", a T-pose, and a pose based on Caine's introduction in episode 1.
• Funny Background Event:
  • When Gangle castigates Jax for insulting Orbsman when he's still physically present in the restaurant, Orbsman moves his whole body to turn in an awkward, rigid manner to watch Pomni move away from the cash register, slightly knocking the register ajar and clipping through the table.
  • While Gummigoo and his friends sit down at a table and Chad realizes he forgot to ask if he could get a kid's toy with his meal, Pomni can be seen slowly crawling up to the crew on all fours to carefully observe them. Just as Gummigoo also shoots down Chad's suggestion to get an "adult toy" instead, Pomni also reacts with a raise of her eyebrows before continuing her approach.
• Gibberish of Love: Pomni slips into this when she meets Gummigoo again.
• Gone Horribly Right:
  • Zooble gives Gangle the plastic happy mask in the hopes that it can help Gangle with remaining positive and not have it constantly broken by Jax. Unfortunately, having a nigh-indestructible happy mask forces Gangle into Stepford Smiler territory when dealing with rising stress levels and difficulties with managing Spudsy's, with her mental health degrading and nearly going off the deep end were it not for Pomni's help. Zooble lampshades this at the end, remarking that the new mask was a "bust".
  • In lieu of Caine's initial horror-themed adventure, both Pomni and Gangle influence things to instead have Caine suggest a more "normal" adventure, that being to work in an ordinary fast-food place. Unfortunately, just because Spudsy's restaurant chain is normal doesn't mean that it's easy, as everyone involved finds out the hard way as they're pushed to their limits in trying to run the restaurant properly, all while dealing with their inner demons.
• G-Rated Drug: In-universe, Stupid Sauce nominally is not a drug, the use of which is presumably not allowed in the Circus. In practice, the primary effects (sedation and Loss of Inhibitions) more resemble alcohol or cannabis than an intelligence decrease. The orange mannequin customer even states that they order the Stupid Burger that comes with the Stupid Sauce all the time and how they're addicted to it, visibly twitching as if they were going through withdrawal. Jax outright calls Ragatha "drunk" when under its effects, and Zooble and Gangle initially wonder if she huffed paint.
• Have We Met?: Gummigoo has this reaction when he makes a surprising reappearance at Spudsy's with his mates. But much to Pomni's disappointment, he does not remember her and acts a bit creeped out by her familiarity with him.
• Head Desk: After Jax clocks out, he walks to his car, enters it, and then immediately slams his head on the steering wheel.
• Hero of Another Story: Kinger has no role in the episode whatsoever other than showing up in the intro to hear Caine's new adventure prompt. Somehow, still, in the end, he receives the highest grade of all of them (an A+) and is depicted riding a bucking cow at a rodeo.
• Hey, You!: The customer who orders a Stupid Burger calls Pomni "little jester", even though Pomni is wearing a name tag. It’s possible the customer’s addiction to Stupid Sauce has made her too dumb to read.
• Hidden Depths:
  • If dialogue from this episode is to be believed, it seems that Gangle, who was characterized in prior episodes as The Eeyore and an Extreme Doormat, wanted to be an anime-influenced comic artist, only to deem that desire unrealistic for reasons unknown. The ending shows that Gangle is nonetheless a talented artist even after joining the Circus, with the last line of the episode being Zooble telling her that they always like what she draws.
  • It's also shown throughout the episode that for all of her emotional problems — especially when she tries repressing them — Gangle has rather effective leadership skills once she's allowed to make use of them. She says early in the episode that she had prior experience as a shift manager and turns out to be surprisingly competent at the job despite her dislike of how it previously got in the way of her above-mentioned artistic ambitions. The fact that she's been given managerial authority over her usual tormentor, Jax, for once certainly helps.
  • While under the effects of "Stupid Sauce", Ragatha drops her doting motherly demeanor and begins subtly insulting Jax, Gangle, and Zooble. She even complains about Pomni flirting with Gummigoo and claims she'd like to be flirted with like him, suggesting her friendship with Pomni is just a pretense to curry favor with her. This suspicion is reinforced when Gangle tells Pomni that she likes Ragatha, but after a while, it's hard to know if Ragatha is sincere.
• Hidden Disdain Reveal: A small one, but Gangle's drawing at the end of herself, Pomni, and Zooble doesn't contain Ragatha—expressing that she doesn't really consider Ragatha a friend or at least not someone she is close to.
• Hope Spot: During "Fast Food Masquerade", Gummigoo and his bandit gang get reused as customers for the adventure. Pomni's taken aback and tries to reach out to him, but he's rather confused and put off with how she begins acting around him, growing further bewildered when she manages to say his name when he never actually gave it during this scenario. It's kept ambiguous as to whether this is truly the same Gummigoo, if his memory was wiped, if he somehow secretly remembers but keeps it to himself, or any combination thereof, but Pomni sees him head off again with a somber note regardless.
• Hourglass Plot: This subtly happens with Ragatha and Jax's usual roles, due to the circumstances. Ragatha is normally kind to everyone and the one who checks on or worries about Pomni, while Jax is the Jerkass who always tries to make trouble and picks on Pomni whenever they interact. In this episode, Ragatha's contact with the Stupid Sauce causes her to express her thoughts in an unusually rude, unfiltered way and act uncaring and apathetic, while Jax gets too worn down by Gangle's behavior as manager to keep up his typical mean attitude and ends up sincerely asking Pomni about her well-being (something Ragatha always does).
• Humanizing Moment: Downplayed. While there have previously been a few hints that he’s a deeper character than he appears to be, all have been very brief and it's easy to just view Jax as a one-dimensional asshole up to this point. Which is why it's so shocking for Pomni (and the audience) to see him actually check up on her towards the end of their shift at Spudsy's.
• Human Piñata: One card from the suggestion box Caine reads aloud is for an "adventure" where Zooble gets turned into a piñata and the other players all take turns beating them up. Jax laughs and says that one was his idea.
• Hypocrisy Callout: When Zooble tries to warn Jax against pushing Caine too far, he snarks that's rich coming from them, seeing as their active refusal to participate in adventures is what drives Caine up the wall more than anything.
• Hypocritical Humor:
  • When Pomni awkwardly tries interacting with Gummigoo, Gangle scolds her for weirding out the customers... all the while acting extremely over the top and comically unhinged while doing so, even crawling on the ground similar to what Pomni did, leading to Gummigoo looking more uncomfortable and weirded out than he was when Pomni was interacting with him.
  • The Gloink Queen swallows six mannequins whole, then scolds three gloinks for making one mannequin suffer.
• I Coulda Been a Contender!: The training video Gangle subjects Jax to has her mention that dreaming of being a webcomic artist is unrealistic and unachievable. Judging by her doodling at the end of the episode and the start of the previous one, she may be referring to a failed attempt at getting a webcomic off the ground before she got into the Circus. It's not stated what caused this dream to crash.
• Idiot Houdini: Despite being causing a lot of problems for everyone during the Spudsy's adventure while under the influence of Stupid Sauce, Ragatha doesn't receive any punishment for her actions from Gangle nor Caine. The most that happens is that Zooble acts as her "designated driver" to get home, and even then that's mostly done out of concern for Ragatha's well-being.
• I'm a Humanitarian: Implied to humorous effect. One of the menu items of Spudsy's detailed in the Wacky Watch website's rebrand for the episode is The Slab, which is a hamburger filled with "carefully curated human meat".
• I Never Told You My Name:
  • Pomni ends up accidentally saying Gummigoo's name while talking to Gangle within earshot of Gummigoo, even though the Gummigoo that Pomni encounters in this adventure is different from the one she met two episodes prior and Gummigoo hadn't told Pomni his name. Subtly, Gummigoo recognizes this when it happens but doesn't get the chance to say anything.
  • Averted with Orbsman, who doesn't show any surprise when Ragatha recognizes him and addresses him by name, simply agreeing with, "That's right, it's me, Orbsman!" Of course, it's unlikely that Orbsman learned as much as Gummigoo about the true nature of their reality, and so he likely didn't need to have his memories erased.
• Innocent Innuendo: When Chad gets mildly upset about forgetting to ask for a kid's meal toy and Gummigoo reminds him that he's an adult, Chad instead wonders if he should ask for an adult toy. Gummigoo is reasonably disturbed about this.
• Insane Troll Logic:
  • The reason why Zooble's participating while Kinger gets left behind is because he offered to "sit [this one] out" for them, even though none of the players are supposed to take designated breaks from adventures and it's never been an established standard in the first place. Caine rolls with it so Zooble is forced to finally join everyone else. The Freeze-Frame Bonus at the end indicates Caine gave Kinger his own adventure.
  • An NPC makes it to the register and doesn't want to order anything, as he's currently eating a bowl of cereal. He and everyone in line behind him get eaten by the Gloink Queen before we can find out what his logic is, but it's clearly a doozy.
• Inspiration Nod: In the Russian dub, the Gloink Queen refers to three of her children as Gorrister, Benny, and Nimdok, referencing I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, which was a major inspiration for the show.
• Instant Wristwatch: During the scene where Jax asks Gangle if the wall clock is broken because it hasn't moved, a watch suddenly appears on Gangle's left arm for her to look at and realize the wall clock really is broken at the end of her existential rant.
• In-Universe Catharsis: Despite the stress and becoming a Stepford Smiler as shift manager, it's obvious that Gangle was enjoying her newfound power over Jax, who couldn't retaliate against her after she convinced Caine to punish any employee who does a lousy job. It's obvious the one thing she enjoyed was getting back at Jax for bullying her during the series and that for once, he couldn't push her around.
• In Vino Veritas: While under the effects of Stupid Sauce, Ragatha is much more brutally honest than usual, saying that Pomni is flirting with Gummigoo and that she would rather hang out with NPCs than the other players with a hint of bitterness in her voice, before mentioning how she wishes somebody would flirt with her. She's also moved by the Gloink Queen's motherly parenting philosophy, comments on how she "miss[es] her horses", tells Gangle she feels like the more responsible person deserving of the managerial position and how her Happy Mask personality makes her annoying right in front of her, and confesses to Jax that while she hates him, she strangely doesn't want him to hate her.
• Irony: In this episode, Pomni, the most anxious player of the group, is the most well-adjusted character when set in a mundane, slice-of-life adventure (and although she has a few minor hiccups of her own, she manages to get some closure from them relatively quickly). On the other hand, the other players, who were more used to Caine's crazy antics to entertain them, spent most of the episode quarreling with each other or bored out of their minds, with Gangle nearly crossing a Despair Event Horizon. Even Pomni herself lampshades how the whole day felt weird.
• Jerkass Ball: Despite the previous episodes having Ragatha act as a kind and compassionate caretaker to her friends, Ragatha getting a dose of Stupid Sauce made her rather rude and apathetic, especially to Gangle, in this episode. Justified in that Ragatha is shown to be a Stepford Smiler, implying that her lowered inhibitions are causing her to voice her usually bottled-up criticisms of people.
• Kids' Meal Toyinvoked: Discussed in-universe when Chad mentions that he wanted to get a kids' meal toy with his order. When Gummigoo points out that Chad's not a kid, the latter then wonders if he can get an adult toy. A rightly perturbed Gummigoo responds with, "Don't know about that one, mate..."
• Know When to Fold 'Em: After Caine uses a trapdoor to force Zooble into the Spudsy's adventure, they resign themself to participating, especially after Gangle asks Caine to create an end-of-day punishment for the bad employees.
• Lampshade Hanging:
  • When Gangle forces Jax to watch a training video on how to become a better employee, he wonders when Gangle had the time to make it.
  • Pomni has noticed the pattern of her emotional talks with the other inhabitants of the digital world, quietly saying that "we're doing another one of these" when she interrupts Gangle's breakdown while taking out trash.
• Laser-Guided Karma: While a lot of the players have a bad time in this episode, the Spudsy's adventure is precisely calibrated to make Jax as miserable as possible, since his coping mechanism is entertaining himself by bullying others. He can't torment Ragatha because she's too addled by Stupid Sauce to register what he's saying, he can't bully Gangle because she now has the authority to retaliate, and Pomni, Zooble, and even the NPCs are off-limits because abusing the restaurant's employees and customers will bring down Gangle's wrath as well. He's stuck doing menial chores and furiously watching a broken clock until his shift is up, and can only muster a single weak wisecrack before limping out the restaurant and slumping over in his car.
• Laughing at Your Own Jokes: When Ragatha hazily calls Zooble a "grunch" by accident, she chuckles at her own mispronunciation.
• Leitmotif: The latter half of "Someone Real" — the theme that plays in "Candy Carrier Chaos!" as Pomni and Gummigoo escape the dev rooms — is played again during Gummi's scenes, but is also heavily remixed into an upbeat electronic version as Gangle runs across the parking lot near the end of the Episode.
• Let's See YOU Do Better!: When Zooble wonders why on Earth Caine thought they would like the prior adventure from Pomni's traumatic description of it, Caine irritably responds that maybe they should suggest a better adventure. Zooble then reveals that the Circus does have a suggestion box, but Caine ignores it.
• Literal Metaphor: Whenever someone complains about Gangle's new personality while wearing the new happy mask, a "crack" or "tink" sound could be heard. While her real mask/face doesn't have a crack shown, her true feelings start slipping through the plastic one due to stress, as if representing how fake the replacement really is while she tries to remain positive. She later admits to Caine in the team's performance review that she "cracked under the pressure".
• Look Both Ways: Gangle ends up unknowingly running into a truck while distracted by herself throwing her mask away, something Caine lampshades while conducting her performance review.
• The Ludovico Technique: In the middle of the episode, not only is Jax being uncooperative with Gangle's orders again, but he also outright tells her that he prefers seeing her sad. Her response is to give him more "training", sending him to a dark room strapped to a chair as he's forced to watch bizarre video sequences to recondition him into a "model employee".
• Made of Indestructium: Downplayed to a realistic degree. The mask Zooble gives to Gangle is made of plastic, and thus significantly more durable than her other masks, letting it withstand whatever antics she'll get up to. Unfortunately it's also deconstructed, since it ends up becoming a literal Mask of Sanity.
• Mandatory Line: Kinger's sole line has him suggesting to Caine that he Opt Out of the adventure so that Zooble can take his place. He's not seen for the rest of the episode, though he apparently went on a solo rodeo adventure while the Spudsy's plot was taking place.
• Mask of Sanity: A literal one in this case. Zooble gives Gangle a comedy mask that won't break like her previous ones thanks to it being plastic. Gangle seemed to enjoy wearing it, but throughout the episode, it's proven to not so much make Gangle happy but force her to pretend that she is, which has dire consequences.
• Mood-Swinger: Gangle's new mask makes her hyperactive and enthusiastic, but also allows her to dip into moments of stern disciplinary action as manager, and later causes her to express breaking points of depression without using the tragedy mask. She quite literally calls her energetic side a "manic episode" to Jax at the start:
  Jax: Why would you do this?
  Gangle: It's called a "manic episode", and you're gettin' three more seasons! HAHA ha ha, anyway.
• Mood Whiplash:
  • When Jax, in frustration, asks Gangle if the clock is broken because it hasn't moved, she starts letting out a mentally unwell and existential rant about how maybe their shift will last forever... and then her watch goes off alarming that their shift is over, so the clock really was just broken.
  • Near the end of the episode, Gangle throws away her mask and triumphantly jumps for joy... only to be hit by a truck.
• Mundane Utility: Subverted. Zooble attempts to use their ability to swap their right arm for a spatula-shaped arm in order to flip burgers. Unfortunately, the spatula arm still burns when placed on the grill, forcing them to grab (with the spatula hand, amusingly enough) and use a regular spatula instead.
• Mystery Meat: One of the items at Spudsy's is "Real 'Meat'", priced at only $0.31. It says it's real, but the quotation marks around "Meat" call that into question. The Spudsy's "official website" on The Wacky Watch claims the meat is actually human flesh.
• Mythology Gag: Jax states that Pomni has apparently always wanted a unicorn horn, and Gangle says that Pomni would look good with one, leading to Pomni responding with, "Well, it's possible," before being interrupted by Caine. It's a clear reference to Gooseworx's various "Pomni's catchphrase" comics released in the time between the series' initial announcement and "Candy Carrier Chaos!"'s release.
• New Job Episode: Employment at a fast food restaurant is the premise of Caine's latest adventure.
• Nightmare Face: The first thing Ragatha sees after she gets hit with Stupid Sauce is a vision of Gangle slowly turning her head around with a creepy toothed grin. This only brings out a guffaw as the Stupid Sauce kicks in fully.
• No Antagonist: Aside from Gangle temporarily adopting the persona of a Mean Boss and controlling the adventure, it really is "normal" as promised, and nothing too drastic happens. The only threats are the mundane boredom and Gangle's depression, not doing well to the crew's sanity. Even Jax himself is significantly less antagonistic compared to how he was in "Candy Carrier Chaos!" (albeit partially due to threat of punishment).
• Noodle Incident:
  • There are no details given about the adventure Orbsman came from before Pomni's arrival, beyond the fact that Ragatha is amicable with him while Jax apparently hates him.
  • Somehow, Gangle was able to make an employee training video within the few hours she's been at Spudsy's.
    Jax: When did you make this?
  • The Gloink Queen apparently taught the way she reproduces to Pomni, and she appears to be traumatized by things she didn't need to know.
  • While everyone else was working at Spudsy's, Kinger was apparently having fun at a rodeo.
• No OSHA Compliance: Spudsy's uses Stupid Sauce as a condiment, which is a substance that might as well be a psychoactive drug so strong Ragatha gets high from just a drop of it in her eye. Though considering Caine's track record, it's surprising nothing else is more dangerous than the deep fryer.
• Nothing Is Funnier:
  • Tearing the Suggestion Box off the wall suddenly causes a water leak that Bubble plugs up with his tongue, despite plumbing being completely unnecessary in the Digital Circus. Then as Caine sticks his tongue out, Bubble's tongue retracts in response, implying they're using the same organ or programmed to be connected for some reason. Neither of these are brought up again for the rest of the episode.
  • Aside from the introduction video, the rest of Gangle's "employee reevaluation" process for Jax isn't shown to comedic effect.
  • We never see what Kinger's adventure was like, only that he rode a bull during it. Gooseworx lampshaded this trope on Tumblr, noting that she thinks it's funnier if we don't know what happened during it.
• Nothing Is Scarier:
  • All that's shown of Jax's supposed training involves giant disembodied hands dragging him away and mechanical ones holding him against a chair so he's forced to look at a sequence of flashing masks. He returns to work looking utterly traumatized, and his behavior for the rest of the episode is a huge case of OOC Is Serious Business.
  • The sequence of darkness surrounding Gangle as she's faced with closing the restaurant alone. Her eyelids begin feeling heavier, a droning noise increases in volume, and a wide angle lens slowly zooms into her blurring face as she frowns, indicating she's at her emotional breaking point. Whether she would've had a panic attack, Abstracted on the spot, or something else entirely isn't exactly clear. Whatever it could've been, it was definitely going to be bad.
• Not Me This Time: A variant. Jax once again breaks Gangle's comedy mask at the start of the episode, but this time immediately says it was an accident. It's unclear if he's telling the truth, but his status as a Card-Carrying Jerkass suggests that he is. As he himself points out in his subsequent arguement with Ragatha, if he had actually meant to do it, he would not only have admitted so up front, he would have done so proudly.
• Obnoxious Entitled Housewife: Parodied by the Gloink Queen. She enters the establishment by devouring the line of people ahead of her before loudly declaring her order for three-hundred cheeseburgers to feed her young. She has to tell her Gloinks, each individually named, to stop harassing another NPC customer (as they're repeatedly pummeling him at rapid pace). Pomni doesn't mind since it's a step up from the previous NPC that had nothing to order, while Ragatha is too Stupid Sauced out of her mind to care.
• Offscreen Moment of Awesome:
  • Zooble somehow managed to finish all 300 burgers for the Gloinks quick enough to avoid the Queen becoming irate, though Pomni was forced to listen to the Queen ramble an uncomfortable amount about Gloink biology in the meantime.
  • Kinger manages to get an A+ from his own adventure. The only thing we see from it is a photo of him bullriding.
• Oh, Crap!: Jax's response to Gangle's training video declaring that it's time for his "employee reevaluation". We don't see this process past the beginning, but he's left with a Thousand-Yard Stare upon being returned to work.
• The One Guy: With Kinger opting out of this adventure, Jax is the only male player participating in it.
• Only Sane Man: Zooble is usually this anyway, but it's made even more apparent in this episode. Out of all the players, they're the one actually doing their job normally and correctly without making a scene. Jax hates his job and doesn't bother trying to work since he'd rather goof off by throwing Ragatha into a deep fryer. Ragatha herself attempts to work but accidentally gets high off of Stupid Sauce which causes her to act, well, stupid (read: high as a kite) and not do her job properly. Gangle is clearly going through a lot of her own spiraling depression during her time as manager and acts pretty unhinged at times while trying to stay positive. Even Pomni gets too caught up with encountering Gummigoo again, all the while acting extremely awkward around him in their interactions, though she at least comes back to her senses when she finally moves on from him. Jax even lampshades this.
  Jax: [to Zooble] So, you're just like... actually doing the job.
• OOC Is Serious Business:
  • Jax is deprived of a sad Gangle in this episode, and so he finds himself out of his element when the normally submissive and agreeable character takes on a more assertive role as his manager.
    • He's surprised when Gangle is not only unfazed by his stunt of throwing Ragatha into the deep fryer, but also contacts Caine directly and asks for there to be a punishment waiting any employees that do a bad job. He weakly asks why Gangle would do this, which she quickly and literally answers with mania. For most of the scene, Jax is stuck in Stunned Silence as Gangle gives him a list of things to do.
      Jax: This is really weird...
    • Since he usually likes to act as the chaotic comedic relief character of the group, he's taken aback by Gangle's ability to somehow have an entire employee training video at the ready for reconditioning any unmotivated workers. When Gangle in the recording actually responds to him answering that he's not smiling, combined with the system suddenly grabbing and restraining his body, Jax worriedly asks if anybody can see what's happening to him despite frequently pretending to "break the fourth wall" in episodes before and after this.
    • Jax eventually becomes so demoralized by the adventure that he acts uncharacteristically cordial towards Pomni, something she's visibly surprised by and suspicious of. He doesn't even have anything demeaning to say when he's called to do the dishes, just casually saying he'll see her later.
      Jax: [dejectedly] How you doin'?
      Pomni: Everything's been... [notices the discomforting change in Jax's behavior] I'm doing fine...
      Jax: Wish I could say the same.
  • After Ragatha tells Gangle that the latter is "kinda annoying" when she's happy, the hitherto manic, mood-swinging Gangle's order to Zooble to help Ragatha is disturbingly calm as she slowly walks away. Zooble is left looking visibly and understandably concerned.
• Out of Focus:
  • Kinger doesn't participate in the episode's adventure, with Caine having given him an adventure of his own entirely offscreen. It's justified in that his Mandatory Line is his open offer to sit out the work shift at Spudsy's in exchange for Zooble participating in his place.
  • Downplayed with Pomni, but she has less screentime in this episode than the previous ones, and relatively fewer scenes put her at the center of the viewers' attention. She still gets to play a notable role in trying to help Gangle sort out her bottled-up stress, and eventually succeeds at that near the end by suggesting for Gangle to clock out and go home to rest while she closes up for the night.
  • Bubble has the least amount of screen presence in this episode, with his sole appearance being to plug the water leak coming out from where the Suggestion Box was. He doesn't even get any lines.
• Overly Pre-Prepared Gag: Gangle's disciplinary "employee re-evaluation" process consists of giant hands dragging Jax into an isolated dark room with a chair for restrainment and a CRT television playing videos made by Gangle for training new hires of the Spudsy's chain. Jax questions when and how she could've made all this and found the time to set everything up, especially when the video asks if he's smiling and predicts he'll say "no".
• Pet the Dog:
  • Assuming Jax is being truthful, he didn't mean to break Gangle's comedy mask with the ball and seemed perfectly fine with just batting alongside her and Ragatha. It's hard to tell because, well... it's Jax but it's implied he's being honest for once.
  • At Pomni's request, Caine agrees to look at the players' suggestions and send them on a more "normal" adventure instead of another horrifying, potentially trauma-inducing one like in the previous episode.
  • While it might be just a result of soul-crushing boredom and agitation from Gangle's behavior, Jax shows some sort of interest in somebody else's well-being when he talks to Pomni later on and even gives her a sincerely friendly goodbye, indicating that he is capable of empathy to a degree. Pomni isn't receptive, being familiar enough with Jax at this point to be rightly suspicious. Later, he's seen cordially interacting with her and Kinger.
  • Caine apparently gave Kinger a wacky adventure to change his mind after the horror and the old traumas he had to go through in the previous episode.
  • Despite the fact that most of the players did a less than perfect job, and the threat of giving a punishment should they fail, Caine ended up giving everyone a passing evaluation and thus sparing them of whatever horrible "punishment" he was going to give them.
• Phlebotinum-Induced Stupidity: True to its name, Stupid Sauce temporarily reduces the intelligence of NPC or Players who drink it. Some splashes in Ragatha's eye when a customer requests it on his burger, rendering her completely inebriated for the rest of her shift.
• Psychological Projection: During Jax's "reevaluation", Gangle, in the video tape, mentions an unrealistic and unattainable dream of being a comic artist that was crushed. While it's directed at Jax, it's made very apparent (especially during the ending) that said dream was Gangle's before she ended up in the Circus.
• Remember the New Guy?: Orbsman makes his proper debut in this episode as one of the customers at Spudsy's, but Ragatha and Jax recognize him. Justified, however, in that Caine reused Orbsman from a previous adventure like the other NPCs who appear in this episode. It just so happens that said previous adventure took place before Pomni's arrival, and thus before the start of the series.
• The Reveal:
  • Zooble's room is shown for the first time.
  • In this episode, it's revealed that before she got stuck in the Circus, Gangle used to be an aspiring comic-book artist who wanted to make a manga-inspired webcomic, only for her dreams to be crushed by unknown circumstances, possibly related to her earlier reveal that she was a shift manager in the past just as she is designated in the adventure.
  • This episode also reveals that the mask she wears doesn't change her emotions, it only makes her look happy, and when she really needs to change her mind, it only becomes an inconvenience.
  • In the same vein, Ragatha states that she misses her horses while under the influence of the Stupid Sauce, indicating that she may have owned some. Combined with the mention of tea parties and dancing lessons, assuming there's any truth to it beyond being a quote from Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure, would indicate that Ragatha came from a wealthy upbringing.
• Riddle for the Ages:
  • Who wrote the suggestion card that inspired this particular adventure? No-one explicitly takes credit for it, and while Gangle's reaction affirming that it sounds "normal" could be seen as implicitly confirming it was her idea, it would be odd for her to suggest an idea based on an experience that clearly made her miserable in her pre-Circus life. Relatedly, no-one takes credit for the previous suggestion of an adventure in which Jax can't speak, though it's implied to be part of his mutual sniping with Zooble. Not to mention that the suggestion box was installed a long time ago and never checked until now, so there is also the possibility that it was written by one of the Abstracted former players.
  • Did Gangle make the "training video" that Jax was forced to watch? The way Jax was forced by disembodied hands into a dark room with a video that seems to respond to him would be a feat of reality warping usually reserved for Caine, and Gangle, who hates this job herself, would have little reason to make such a video.
• Rule of Symbolism:
  • The fact that Gangle constantly wears a Tragedy Mask that never breaks, under Comedy Masks that never last long and are constantly destroyed. It's not that those masks actively control her mood; this is her trying and failing to look happy through her depression. The new Happy Mask she gets from Zooble is a stand-in for medication and other methods used to address it, which provide some benefit yet fail to entirely work out after a time.
  • Pomni later asks Gangle if she's ever considered getting any help or advice from Ragatha. Even as the person assigned with the entire swappable-mask-gimmick for her avatar, she explains Ragatha's constant chipper attitude makes it difficult for Gangle to tell how genuine she is at times. It's more blatant in some of the other dubs, where her dialogue has her wonder if Ragatha uses figurative "masks" of her own.
  • Right before closing, Gangle's entire world looks dark around her, and she hears a horrible Drone of Dread in her head. Many people who went through depression will tell you that the world feels the same way, especially when they reached their breaking point.
• Rule of Three: Gangle's mask makes a cracking noise three times across the episode, each more severe than the last, which occurs whenever someone challenges her forced optimism, intentionally or otherwise: first when Pomni reminds her their job isn't real, making Gangle feel she lacks authority; second when Jax says he likes her better when she's sad; and third when Ragatha (in a drunken stupor) calls her annoying when she's happy.
• Running Gagged: Played for Laughs in the episode's trailer. Not only have Pomni and the previous episode trailer's narrator been "released" from the meat freezer they were teleported to (Pomni in the trailer for "Candy Carrier Chaos!", and the narrator in the trailer for "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor") thanks to Gangle and Jax, but apparently, everlasting peace was achieved with no one teleported anywhere ever again.
• Scary Teeth: When Ragatha accidentally gets some Stupid Sauce in her eye, she has a hallucination of Gangle with a nightmarish face that includes a mouthful of sharp, fanged teeth in a wide Slasher Smile. She's momentarily unsettled before being hit by the full effects of the sauce.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
  • Once again, Zooble attempts to skip the Spudsy's adventure, but gets forcibly dropped into said adventure and resignedly participates to avoid being punished by Caine.
  • When it's officially time for him to leave, Jax, without a second thought, walks out of the restaurant and bluntly drops how much he hated this adventure.
• Scully Box: In-Universe. Pomni grabs a nearby box and stands on it to reach the cash register more easily.
• Selective Enforcement: Gangle is (understandably) much harsher to Jax than she is any of the other employees under her, giving him the particularly nasty jobs. When Jax is having a quiet moment during a lull she insists on him finding busywork (with the classic "Got time to lean, got time to clean" phrase) while ignoring that Pomni and Ragatha are similarly unoccupied with no customers.
• Self-Inflicted Hell: It's heavily implied that Caine was expecting the players to go crazy with the fast food adventure, and didn't really expect them to treat it like an actual job so their misery is kinda their own fault.
• Ship Tease:
  • When Pomni notices Gummigoo's return as he walks up to her, trying to order food, she's almost always stammering when she's around him. Ragatha, high off of "Stupid Sauce", even refers to Pomni's interactions with Gummigoo as "flirting" when Gangle asks where she went, and wishes she would be flirted with.
  • Ragatha noting Pomni talking with Gummigoo seems tinged with jealousy, since she complains Pomni would rather talk to an NPC than talk to them. She also complains about how nobody ever flirts with her.
  • Zooble seems especially close to Gangle, doing their best to help her out with her problems. They give Gangle the more durable comedy mask at the beginning of the episode in the hopes of making her feel better, and bashfully waves it off when she thanks them. Later, Zooble visibly shows concern for Gangle after an intoxicated Ragatha's comments get under her skin and cause her to go sadly stand in the corner. Then in the ending when Gangle assumes everyone does not want her around after the way she treated them and acted, Zooble reassures her that they don't hate her (well, except for Jax) and encourage her to bring her artwork along since they enjoy seeing whatr she draws, which greatly cheers Gangle up.
  • A drunk/high Ragatha tells Jax that she hates him, yet doesn't want him to hate her, before asking if it's weird to feel this way. Jax simply brushes this off.
• Shoo Out the Clowns: Kinger sits out of the Spudsy's adventure, meaning less comic relief for a rather gloomy episode.
• Shout-Out:
  • Ragatha's explanation of how to throw a baseball to Gangle ("wind your arm backwards in a big circle, release right at the bottom, and follow through") is a reference to the The Twelve Principles of Animation.
  • Caine quotes the notorious Minecraft with Gadget line when he says, "You can shut up now!"
  • When Zooble falls through a trap door, a honking noise plays akin to the "bad egg" chute in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
  • The fanfare when the work day starts is an homage to the map intro music from the first Mario Party 1.
  • Orbsman looks like something out of Ballz or possibly Ecstatica, keeping with the 1990s aesthetic of the series.
  • In Caine's office, one of the books on the shelf says, "MATPAT THEORY" on the spine. It's worth noting that, at the time this episode came out, on another MatPat-affiliated channel, Film Theorists, two videos about TADC were published before MatPat himself retired and a third one between his retirement and this episode.
  • Another book on Caine's shelf is titled "MINDFREAK", presumably after Criss Angel Mindfreak.
  • Jax's reaction to Gangle's first manic episode, "This is really weird", is taken from Andy's reaction to the Camel's Disney Acid Sequence from Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure.
  • The "Stupid Sauce" happens to be Bright Pink.
  • The scene where Gangle turns around with a Nightmare Face is a reference to the iconic first zombie encounter from the original Resident Evil 1.
  • The start of Jax's "employee reevaluation" involves him being shoved in front of a screen that has Gangle's mask flashing repeatedly on it, interspersed with pure white frames, alongside a series of simple tones — all heavily reminiscent of the Silver Shamrock commercials from Halloween III: Season of the Witch.
  • Ragatha calling Gangle a "grunch" is a nod to the Pilotredsun video "Grinch's Ultimatum".
  • When Gangle tries to tell Ragatha that a poor performance could lead to her getting hurt, a stoned Ragatha directly quotes Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure: "Hurt nothin'! I've been hurt enough! Packages landing on my head, tea parties, dancing lessons..."
  • In the French Dub, replying to Gangle who recommends her to work faster to prevent her from "winding up with her head under water"^note "finir la tête sous l'eau", a French expression meaning being in a rush and behind the schedule at the same time, Ragatha complains she already has her head underwater, can't eat after midnight, or walk under bright lights, à la Gizmo.
  • Gangle quotes the "How long have we been on this rock?" scene from The Lighthouse almost word-for-word when Jax is complaining about the broken clock.
  • The serial format on the license plate of Jax's car is labeled 1138.
  • When Caine glitches out, two of the poses he makes are references to a particularly notorious costume of himself from a content farm video and the other to the memetic Family Guy "death pose".
  • Some of the foreign versions use the three named Gloinks to add even more shout-outs:
    • Both in the French dub and sub, they are called Riri, Fifi, et Loulou, which correspond to how Huey, Dewey, and Louie are named in the French translations.
    • In the German dub, three of the Gloinks are named in the subtitles as Uzi, V, and Cyn.
    • In the Russian dub, their names are Gorrister, Benny, and Nimdok.
    • The Polish dub names them Tytuś, Romuś and A'Tomuś.
• Spinning Clock Hands: During the Time Lapse, the clock in the room turns at a fast pace until a hour has past.
• Stealth Pun: When Ragatha gets hit with the Stupid Sauce, she acts like she's inebriated or high. You might say she was on the sauce.
• Stepford Smiler:
  • Gangle accuses Ragatha of being insincere, and she is much more prone to complaining while high.
  • Gangle herself getting a more durable comedy mask turns her into this as she desperately tries to put on a confident cheery demeanor even when nobody seems to like her that way.
• Superficial Suggestion Box: This episode provides the quote for that page. As lampshaded by Zooble, Caine had put out a suggestion box for future adventures, but hasn't ever checked it once until now.
• Sure, Let's Go with That: Kinger offers to sit out on the Spudsy's adventure so Zooble can "take his place". When Zooble protests that's not how it works, Caine goes along with it to force Zooble to participate and gives Kinger a solo adventure while the others are busy.
• Surprisingly Happy Ending: After going through the emotional wringer all episode, Gangle receives much-needed comfort and reassurance from Zooble that she has at least one genuine friend in the Circus and is convinced to share her art with the rest of the group.
• Take That!:
  • The episode pulls no punches when representing what it's like to work in the food service industry and service sectors; the customers are mostly comical versions of what employees might have to deal with, members of the cast each represent a certain archetypical coworker in fast food environments, and Gangle finds the whole thing such a miserable experience that she's brought to her lowest psychological point when nearing the end of the adventure, despite (and arguably because of) her position as the manager. It's rather telling how the violent and chaotic fantasy adventures Caine came up with in previous episodes have never broken most of the cast's spirit like this mundane scenario from the Suggestion Box.
  • One of the job responsibilities listed on The Wacky Watch promo site mentions "Ensure ice cream machine is broken at all times", something McDonald's franchises have become infamous for because they cost so much to repair.
• The Tape Knew You Would Say That: Exaggerated with the training video that Gangle shows Jax. When the Gangle in the video asks, "Are you smiling?", Jax responds with a blunt, confused "Uh, no". Cue the Gangle in the video staring at the camera and responding with a quiet, emotionless "Why not?", followed by Jax being brought right up to within inches of the TV by mechanical arms as Gangle declares that it's time for his "reevaluation"...
  Jax: Uh, no- nobody can see this, right?!
• That Came Out Wrong: When Chad is upset that he didn't ask for a kids meal toy, Gummigoo tells him that he's not a kid, causing Chad to instead suggest he buy an adult toy, causing Gummigoo to react with, "Don't know about that one, mate." Considering what "adult toy" usually means...
• This Is Gonna Suck: Jax suspects the Spudsy's adventure is going to be terrible simply due to potentially mundane boredom. It gets worse when Gangle starts asserting her authority, something Jax isn't prepared for.
• Throw the Dog a Bone:
  • After all the psychological and emotional trauma she endured in the previous episodes, Pomni gets off relatively easy this time, growing confident enough to have closure with Gummigoo and helping Gangle through the latter's depression.
  • Despite promising a punishment for the unruly employees, Caine gives everyone a "B+" on their evaluation (except for Kinger, who's given a "A+" despite being on a completely different adventure) and nothing happens to them after an already bad day. While Ragatha remained barely functional in the episode and Jax refused to work altogether, by some Caine's standard they all did a good job, disproving Zooble's concern.
  • Somewhat deconstructed with Gangle in this episode. She gets a replacement Happy Mask that's made of more durable materials and won't break as easily, letting her feel 'normal' for much longer than she's used to. It also lets her be more assertive than usual, allowing her to slip into her manager persona much more easily. While this change lasts for most of the episode, the upsides to the mania she feels with her new mask are only fleeting, since comments from Jax and Ragatha are still able to chip away at her sanity without completely breaking her. She's brought to her lowest point when she's left with closing Spudsy's for the night, with her new mask having an even worse look of anguish than anything her Tragedy Mask has shown to be capable of, and she's only saved from a breakdown when Pomni lets her know she has her back. She ultimately considers the mask a bust and fears her behavior actually made things worse with the others, but at least Zooble assures her that isn't the case.
• Time Lapse: The last hour of Ragatha's shift, with Zooble helping her clean the kitchen... and doing most of the work while Ragatha keeps being high on Stupid Sauce, eventually passing out. Zooble ends up carrying her away.
• Too Much Information: When the Gloink Queen comes to Spudsy’s for the second time, she (for some reason) gives Pomni a detailed explanation on how Gloinks reproduce, which leaves Pomni feeling disgusted.
• Took a Level in Dumbass: A literal example with Ragatha. Thanks to accidentally getting high on the appropriately-named Stupid Sauce, she spends much of the adventure stumbling around, saying silly things and alienating her co-workers all as she delays work orders and makes a fool of herself. Even after returning to the circus, it's shown that she's still under the influence of Stupid Sauce, lying on the couch upside down while everyone relaxes normally.
• Took a Level in Jerkass: Aside from the previously mentioned Ragatha, Gangle is shown to be far more biting and domineering, due to being put into a position of power as the manager of Spudsy's. While it's not as noticeable with Jax and Ragatha due to the former's Jerkass behavior and the latter's Stupid Sauce-Induced Idiocy, her behavior toward Pomni is certainly jarring, where she openly snaps at her for neglecting her post and doubting her authority.
• Took a Level in Kindness: Very heavily downplayed, but still prevalent with Jax, who, thanks to Gangle's domineering authority over him, can't act out or annoy anyone without the hammer being brought down on him. This results in him ignoring a stupified Ragatha and acting outright civil to Pomni during the dinner rush.
• True Companions: Zooble is this to Gangle, since although (or because) they don't sugarcoat what they say the way Ragatha does, their acts of care towards Gangle are well and truly sincere. This exchange at the end says it best about these two:
  Gangle: I don't deserve a friend like you.
  Zooble: Well, you've got one.
• Twitchy Eye: Gangle's manic mask barely hides how she's crumbling under the pressure. Key moments include Pomni almost questioning her authority as manager in front of Gummigoo, and Jax and Ragatha's comments about not liking her toxic positivity.
• Ultra Super Death Gore Fest Chainsawer 3000: Caine doubles down on the previous day's horror theme with "The Curse of the Violent Psychopath Butcher" and starts describing a gruesome scenario before the players cut him off and request something else. For extra Refuge in Audacity, it's the first adventure title in the series that isn't alliterative.
• The Unintelligible: Downplayed. Orbsman has heavily distorted, rubbery speech that's hard — but not impossible — for the characters and audience to make out.

• The Un-Reveal: Gangle calls Caine and suggests setting up a punishment for anyone doing a terrible job in the episode's adventure. Since all of them seemed to finished fine (with Caine giving everyone who participated a "B+" while the absent Kinger gets an "A+"), they all avoid whatever punishment Caine might have planned in the end, if indeed he actually had one lined up at all.
• Unsatisfiable Customer:
  • Subverted and Parodied. During breakfast hours, a Mannequin customer walks up to Pomni and submits their order for a Stupid Burger, calling her a "little jester". The inflection in their voice makes it seem as though they're being purposefully rude and insulting as they demand they make sure to add the Stupid Sauce, but it's mainly since they didn't get the sauce the last time they ordered the "Stupid Burger", which is apparently a real menu item at Spudsy's and frequently ordered by said customer. Their tone just happens to be the way they naturally talk.
  • Exaggerated and Parodied again during the Lunch Rush. Another Mannequin holds up the line seemingly because they haven't finished their order, but Pomni's question reveals they haven't actually given an order at all. When prompted, they politely decline as if it was a friendly offer, since they're satisfied with the bowl of cereal they brought with them. No reason is given for why they're in line to begin with before the Gloink Queen enters and demands they make three-hundred cheeseburgers for her children.
• Unwitting Instigator of Doom: One of the first mannequin customers orders a "Stupid Burger" and emphasizes that they really need the sauce that comes with it in order to feel its effects. Ragatha, in her haste to serve the customer in question, accidentally squirts some of it in her face, which results in her being completely drugged out for the rest of the adventure.
• Vanity License Plate: After Jax clocks out on his shift, he walks to a car with the license plate reading "JAX.001".
• Villains Out Shopping: The customers that show up include antagonists from previous adventures, specifically the Gloink Queen and her spawn from "Gather the Gloinks", and the gummy bandits from "Candy Carrier Chaos!" Aside from the Gloink Queen eating an entire line of default NPCs and the awkwardness of Gummigoo's reappearance, they're fairly typical customers.
• Visual Pun: Gangle puts on a literal mask of forced positivity that Zooble gives her when her comedy mask breaks again, which causes major friction between her and everyone else. It's only when she removes this mask that things seem to improve.
• We Are Not Going Through That Again: Caine's next adventure was going to be another horror-themed adventure called "The Curse of the Violent Psychopath Butcher", only for Pomni to interrupt and stop Caine before he can finish describing or send them to that adventure, not wanting a repeat of what happened last episode.
• We Want Our Jerk Back!: Inverted. Jax and Ragatha both admit to Gangle that they prefer her acting constantly depressed and submissive rather than the forced positivity and Mean Boss tendencies she adopts as a Spudsy's manager. Downplayed in that Jax is simply a jerk in general who would naturally take more pleasure in a Gangle who's more of a pushover, and Ragatha was high on Stupid Sauce, making her uncharacteristically lazy and apathetic.
• When She Smiles: After she leaves Spudsy's and puts off the mask, Gangle appears to be genuinely happy with her normal face, and it's way more comforting to see than her usual comedy mask.
• Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Ragatha's left with a very wide, panicked eye for a moment after her Stupid Sauce-induced hallucination of Gangle with a scary mask.
• You Are Not Alone:
  • Noticing Gangle's trudging through a depressive mental haze when she's seeing the restaurant close out, Pomni steps in to offer closing the store in her place so she can leave early and get some rest, adding that it's fine if she doesn't want to be stuck alone.
  • Zooble joins in with cheering Gangle up at the end of the episode. While she's distancing herself from the group, Zooble assures her they still enjoy her company and that they can figure things out some other time since the new mask didn't pan out, inviting Gangle to join the rest of the group.
    Gangle: I don't deserve a friend like you...
    Zooble: Heh, well, you've got one.
• You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!:
  • Jax has this attitude twice towards Gangle. First is when Caine sets up a fast food restaurant adventure based on Gangle going for whoever suggested it, thanks to Pomni's suggestion for a normal outing, especially after last episode; plus, Gangle is appointed manager in charge of the gang. The second is when she calls Caine to ask for a possible punishment in case anyone (mainly Jax) slips up by the end of the work day.
  • Zooble tries to once again skip out on the adventure, but Kinger volunteers to be left out in their place, much to their confusion since that's not how it's supposed to work. Unfortunately, Caine accepts this reasoning and automatically drops them down a trapdoor into the adventure.
    Caine: Great idea, Kinger! It'll be nice to have you back on board, Zooble.
    Zooble: Wh— Are you kidding me?! I'm not just gonna be forced into this stupid adventu—
    Caine: You can shut up now!
    Zooble: [descending and echoing] AAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUGH!!!!
  • After spending an unprecedented amount of time watching the training video, Jax glances at the clock on the wall and notices it hasn't moved at all.
    Jax: Oh, are you KIDDING ME?! Hey, Gangle! I think the clock's broken.
