Rip Van Kitty

When Garfield falls asleep at a picnic, he dreams that he wakes up 20 years later to see how people and technology have changed.

Grabbity

When Roy learns about gravity, he plays a trick on Wade by convincing him that the law of gravity has been repealed.

The Big Catnap

When Jon gets a box of cookies from his mother that she only makes once a year, he tells Herman the Mailman stories of the past times Garfield conned him out of them. When Jon finds out that Garfield is asleep, he is determined to make sure he stays asleep so he can finally eat his cookies.

"Rip Van Kitty" provides examples of

• 20 Minutes into the Future: Garfield has a dream where he wakes up in the then-distant year of 2009^note this episode aired in 1989, which is depicted as a Jetsons-like future with flying cars and ultra-modern houses.
• All Just a Dream: The end of this episode has Garfield wake up from his nightmare in which food is simply a pill. He is glad to wake up, and Jon hands him a pill to eat... Garfield runs away screaming. Double subverted when Jon reveals it was just a vitamin he had to take before eating his real food.
• Comically Missing the Point: When Garfield decides to go fishing and use Nermal as bait, this exchange occurs;
  Jon: Garfield, that's a cruel thing to do!
  Garfield: Yeah, probably make the fish sick.
  Jon: If you keep doing these things, Nermal will stop visiting us!
  Garfield: Promises, promises.
• Food Pills: Garfield falls asleep and has a dream where he wakes up in the future where all food is in pill form, much to his chagrin. When he wakes up and sits down for his lunch, Jon serves him a pill on a plate causing him to run away in a panic.
  Jon: What's wrong with taking a daily vitamin tablet?
• Or Was It a Dream?: Subverted when Jon hands Garfield a small pill after saying it's lunchtime (Garfield had dreamed that he was visiting the future, when all food was processed into similar pills). The cat runs off panicking to find a cheeseburger, and Jon reveals that the pill is just a vitamin.
• Picnic Episode: This episode involves Garfield taking a nap and having a Dream Sequence while he, Jon, Odie, and Nermal are having a picnic.
• Planet Looters: This episode includes an alien race that descend on defenseless planets and eat all their food; in a development that even the characters remark on as obvious, they turn out to look an awful lot like Garfield.
• Rip Van Winkle: Garfield takes a nap and (dreams that he) wakes up 20 years later to see how technology and people have changed. Nermal hasn't aged at all, however, to Garfield's horror.
• Tempting Fate: when Garfield hears that the Zizzabottawittawottaboinkboinkthreebians, an alien race of short creatures that sleep twenty-three hours a day and deplete the food supply of a planet in their one hour awake, are coming to Earth. Garfield thinks aloud as their ship descends:
  Garfield: Gosh—short, lazy, and they eat an entire planet's worth of food. I wonder what they look like?
  (The ship opens, and countless aliens that look exactly like Garfield begin emerging from it)
  Zizzabottawittawottaboinkboinkthreebians: I'M HUNGRY! WHERE'S THE LASAGNA? (etc.)
  Garfield: I think we all saw that one coming, didn't we?
• Time-Passage Beard: In Garfield's dream, he, Jon, Odie and Binky have grown long, gray beards.

"Grabbity" provides examples of:

• Believing Their Own Lies: Roy tricks Wade into thinking the law of gravity has been repealed. After Orson tells Roy what the world would be like without gravity, as well as seeing Booker danging upside down by the ribbon of his kite, he starts to believe that there's no gravity.
• Coconut Meets Cranium: This episode ends with the apple variant; an apple falls on Orson, then a bunch of apples do.
• Fur Is Clothing: Lanolin is shown hanging some wool suits on a clothesline in this episode.
• Got Me Doing It: Roy constantly refers to "gravity" as "grabbity". When Orson explains how important gravity is to Roy, he accidentally says "grabbity" before correcting himself.
• Gravity Is Only a Theory: Roy makes Wade believe the Law of Gravity (or rather, "Grabbity") has been repealed. Wade then becomes afraid of floating off into space.
• Kite Riding: The Worm invokes this trope when Booker wants to fly his kite. The Worm ties the ribbon of Booker's kite to Booker's foot, and when the kite goes into the air, the ribbon pulls Booker up.
• Malaproper: Roy mispronounces "gravity" as "grabbity", hence this episode's title.

"The Big Catnap" provides examples of:

• Big Eater: This short begins with Garfield eating a lunch with one serving from each of what he considers the four basic food groups; pasta, a cheeseburger with fries, chocolate cake, and more pasta.
• Body Paint: A flashback shows that Garfield conned Jon out of his cookies by painting himself yellow and pretending he has the Bolivian Cookie Fever, a disease that causes the victim's body to turn yellow and can only be cured with a large quantity of cookies. Garfield's ruse is exposed when Jon catches Odie tracking yellow paint in the kitchen.
• Don't Wake the Sleeper: When Jon finds out that Garfield is sleeping, he decides not to wake him up so that he can finally have his cookies. Despite all the loud sounds around him, such as a parade playing their instruments, Odie barking, and the TV playing an ad for a car race, Garfield doesn't wake up. Jon goes to the park and it seems like he's finally going to get to enjoy his cookies, but when he takes a bite of one, this wakes Garfield up and he rushes to the park to eat the rest.
• Downer Ending: For Jon, at least. This episode revolves around him trying to enjoy his mother's cookies delivered to him once a year. Garfield steals them once again, and Jon goes insane trying to think of a way to finally eat them next year.
• Pet the Dog: After finishing his lunch, Garfield checks his schedule and sees that "Annoy Mailman" is next on it. However, he's feeling tired, so he decides not to bother Herman and instead takes his nap. Sure enough, Herman is expecting Garfield to attack him, but to his surprise, it's Jon who does it instead, as he was expecting a package of cookies from his mother.
• Rule of Three: Jon shows Herman three flashbacks of the past times Garfield conned him out of his cookies. Last year, Garfield painted himself yellow and tricked Jon into thinking he had the Bolivian Cookie Fever, two years ago, Garfield tricked Jon into talking on the telephone so he could eat his cookies while he wasn't looking, and three years ago, Garfield used the door of an abandoned safe to trick Jon into hiding the cookies in it.
• Whole Episode Flashback: This episode has Jon show Herman three flashbacks of the times Garfield conned him out of his cookies.

The Quickies provide examples of:

• Be Careful What You Wish For:
  • In the Quickie preceding "Grabbity", Booker and Sheldon want to play on a seesaw, but since they both weigh the same, Orson suggests that they both sit on the same end while he sits on the other end. When Orson sits on his end, Booker and Sheldon slide down to him, wishing they could go up instead of down. Roy overhears and jumps onto the now-empty end, launching all three of them into the air.
    Roy: I love to make children happy.
  • In the Quickie following "The Big Catnap", Garfield and Odie have come in from the rain. Since they're dripping water everywhere, he orders them to dry off, and they do so... on him.
• Downer Ending: The Quickie following "The Big Catnap" gives one to Jon. It's a rainy day and Jon is trying to relax, but Garfield and Odie have come in from the rain and have splashed him. He then trips over a puddle and gets himself locked outside his house.
  Garfield: He's a proud man, Odie. He won't let us see him cry.
• Fat Flex: In the Quickie preceding "Rip Van Kitty", when Jon is Flexing Those Non-Biceps, Garfield gives himself a Heroic Build before saying "Bet you didn't know you can flex fat".
• Seesaw Catapult: In the Quickie preceding "Grabbity", Orson, Booker, and Sheldon are all sitting on one end of a seesaw. Roy jumps onto the other end, launching all three of them into the air.
