Basic Trope: Someone who's trouble, but hot.
- Straight: Big Dumb Bully Bob is often regarded as a thuggish troublemaker by many people, but he's viewed as a really cute guy by our protagonist, Nerdy Bully Alice.
- Exaggerated: Bob is Hated by All, but only a few crazy people (according to society) see Bob as the handsome devil he really is.
- Downplayed: Bob has a Face of a Thug (and possibly even the demeanor of one too), but even that kind of face does tend to attract women on account of All Girls Want Bad Boys.
- Justified: Bob, just like Alice, is an outcast, with a terrible home life. Not only does she like him for how hot and/or cute he is, she feels she has a better chance with him because of her outcast status as well.
- Inverted: Bob is a Lovable Nerd who's nice and affable but rather homely looking, and thus not very cute.
- Subverted:
- Bob seems to be a legitimate thug, but as it turns out he's not really a crook or even a small-scale delinquent, just some guy with a frightening appearance.
- Bob, despite his muscled frame and cute face, ruins it with his general personality being off-putting and awkward (not even in the cute way, but in the creepy way); he's nowhere near cute in any sense of the word.
- Double Subverted:
- But push his buttons, and you'll see why people genuinely fear him when he's done with nearly snapping your neck.
- But after noticing this, Bob decides to clean his act up; while he can't really be considered a genuine nice guy, he's still considered cute now.
- Parodied:
- Bob is a Badass Adorable delinquent who, due to being in his teens (not 18 and above), is often condescended to for being a youngster in spite of his massive, burly body and every other sign that would make others initially take him for a veteran brawler in his late 20's.
- Bob is some kind of ridiculous Jim Stark parody (or more like a Bizarro-style parody), from his green jacket in contrast with Jim's red, to wearing a tank top in contrast to Jim's t-shirt, to having a much longer and bigger pompadour (even bigger than Elvis Presley's pomp!) in contrast to Jim's short quiff, to even the way he's initially told of in which he's seemingly just a Nice Guy only to be revealed to be an arrogant, stuck-up, brutish thug.
- Zig-Zagged: People's perception on Bob, such as his reputation or his looks, wildly vary from person to person.
- Averted: Bob isn't considered hot, but he's not considered trouble either.
- Lampshaded: "Well, aren't you quite the James Dean-wannabe yourself."
- Invoked:
- Bob watches Rebel Without a Cause one day and decides, "Screw it, I'm gonna style myself like Jimmy!"
- Alice, being an outcast herself, sees Bob as somehow on her level, and thus she decides to tell him that they can be Lonely Together since they're both considered "trouble".
- Exploited: Bob puts this act up so he can balance his normal life and his Secret Identity, seeing that if nobody's gonna try to get to form relations with Bob, then they won't worry about him suddenly disappearing for about a few days before popping up randomly again.
- Defied:
- Bob decides he's not gonna be a complete dick forever, even if it makes him look like a brooding bad boy. He cleans up his act and starts being a generally affable person to be around.
- Alice decides that, regardless of how "cute" he is deep down, Bob is still a ruthless, brutal thug and thus more trouble than he's worth, and subsequently avoids him.
- Discussed:Bob: "Well, think I should style myself like Jimmy? Y'know, Jimmy from that movie I just watched a week ago. Don't you know Rebel Without a Cause? That movie."
Charlie: "I dunno Bob, it might be tempting to look like a brooding bad boy, but it's probably gonna make you look like a complete thug."
Bob: "Ain't I already a good-for-nothin' thug? Hell, I even consider myself one'a those big oafs that small guys like Jimmy beat up just t'make 'em look better." - Conversed: "Bob really gives me James Dean vibes. From the way he dresses, to the way he styles his hair, to especially the way he broods in the corner."
- Implied: Bob, despite being a known Jerkass, often has his fans, specifically from the opposite sex (though that doesn't mean gay guys are turned off by him).
- Played for Laughs: Bob comes across less like a James Dean kind of guy, and more like a Tommy Wiseau kind of idiot constantly ranting and raving about people (who may or may not be named "Lisa", "Mark", or any similar names) tearing him apart or whatever.
