Basic Trope: Toilets and related bodily functions used as a source of (usually lowbrow) humor.
- Straight: Bob farts, and it’s Played for Laughs.
- Exaggerated:
- Every single joke is derived from toilets and related bodily functions.
- Bob farts. Alice poops her pants. Bob experiences diarrhea. Alice then farts so much that both Alice and Bob die.
- Downplayed:
- Bob makes a fart joke, though no actual farting is shown.
- Bob does a Potty Dance outside of a port-a-potty, which is Played for Laughs.
- Justified: Bob suffers from flatulence issues.
- Inverted: Detectives find Bob’s mutiliated corpse in a bathroom; the bathroom is there, but the humor is not.
- Subverted: Bob's farting is treated more as a Moral Event Horizon crossover.
- Double Subverted: But then becomes a funny anecdote later on.
- Parodied:
- Bob's fart is so bad, it manages to kill someone.
- Alice and Bob are 2 toilets who do stand-up comedy.
- Alice laughs at Bob farting so much that she farts too. Charles laughs at Alice farting so much that he farts too. Ad infinitium until methane emissions across the world have spontaneously increased.
- Zig-Zagged: Some jokes in the work revolve around bathroom humor, but others don’t.
- Averted:
- Lampshaded: “Great, just what we need: a fart joke."
- Invoked: Bob farts, and everyone starts laughing at him.
- Exploited: Before fighting the Big Bad, Emperor Evulz, Bob tells him a fart joke. Evulz finds it so funny that he cancels his plan, or at the very least is distracted enough to get defeated.
- Defied: Nobody laughs at bodily functions, and the people who carry out said bodily functions leave the room to do so.
- Discussed: "You don't seriously find fart jokes funny, do you?"
- Conversed: "Fart jokes: they've been done to death!" "Maybe so, but they're funny!"
- Implied: Bob eats several burritos. It's never shown, but it's implied that the results weren't pretty.
- Deconstructed: After age 7 or so (perhaps earlier for girls, who are expected to be more polite and refined than their Spear Counterpart), this sort of stuff is seen as immature, rude, and disgusting.
- Reconstructed: There are times when it's OK to joke about this stuff, and times when it's not. As long as everyone knows which it is, no one will be offended.
- Played for Laughs: Bob farts a tune of some sort in a crowded elevator, and everyone inside starts singing along, only to keel over from the gas.
- Played for Drama:
- Bob gets a kick out of farting for people's amusement, but it embarrasses and disgusts his girlfriend, Alice. He must choose between his love or the attention she gets.
- Bob experiences Potty Emergency while at work, ending in Potty Failure. This results in him getting fired and losing the only source of income he had.
- Played for Horror: Bob’s farts are Played for Laughs at first, until it turns out that flatulence is the first signs of a zombie virus. People start being paranoid as the sound of farting is now associated with the possibility of becoming “one of them”.
