Playing With / Spit Out a Shoe

Basic Trope: A character is eaten, and something on them was spat out.

• Straight: Emperor Evulz's dragon, Fluffy, eats Action Girl Alice, spitting out her Combat Stilettos when he's done.
• Exaggerated: Fluffy spits out all the equipment Alice had with her.
• Downplayed: As Alice is being eaten, she is kicking her legs and one of her shoes falls off and out of his mouth right as she gets swallowed, but it isn't really focused on.
• Justified:
  • Fluffy thinks her shoes tasted bad.
  • Fluffy couldn't eat the shoes at all, or at least it would be inconvenient to him.
  • Alice's equipment is indigestible. Wouldn't you have a terrible time eating leather and metal?
  • While Fluffy was eating Alice, she was kicking around and struggling, so her shoes came off in Fluffy's mouth.
  • One of Alice's shoes got caught in Fluffy's teeth, and he had to spit it out.
  • Fluffy is smart enough to know what a stiletto heel can do to his gullet and thus doesn't want to risk it.
• Inverted:
  • Fluffy eats Alice, but spits her out, minus the stilettos.
  • Alice kills Fluffy and has a feast with the Five-Man Band with the meat they harvest from him. Upon finishing, Alice spits out a bit of a scale that had been left in her portion.
• Subverted:
  • Fluffy eats Alice and appears to be trying to cough something up. However, it turns out to be just a burp.
  • Alice turns out to be still alive inside Fluffy's stomach, even after he spits her stiletto out, and says "You couldn't have let me keep that? Now my sock is getting all slimy!"
  • Or, she removed her shoe and, from Fluffy's stomach, crammed it back up through its throat hole so that Fluffy would cough it out and Emperor Evulz would think she was dead. Later, she beats up Fluffy from the inside.
  • Fluffy eats Alice, spits out her shoes, and then goes to eat the other heroes. But then he stops with a funny look on his face, and Alice slices his belly open with her sword, devil horns, or even blows him up. She then emerges, covered in blood and slime, says "Looks like he should've learned to chew his food", and then picks her shoes up.
• Double Subverted: Her shoe is expelled from Fluffy's mouth when he burps.
• Parodied:
  • Alice's shoes are made specifically to be dragon-proof.
  • Fluffy eats Alice and punctuates this by burping her up in her entirety.
• Zig-Zagged:
  • Fluffy eats Alice and spits out her shoe, then picks it back up and tries to eat it again, but spits it back out.
  • Fluffy rejects varying personal effects from most members of the Five-Man Band, but he eats Bob and everything he was wearing and carrying. On the other hand, he spits out part of Stacy's body but eats all her equipment and clothing.
• Averted:
  • Fluffy does not eat Alice.
  • Alice is nude when Fluffy eats her, so he does not spit out anything afterward.
• Lampshaded: "I guess Fluffy doesn't like heels."
• Invoked: Alice chose clothes that would be hard to eat.
• Exploited: The other heroes fight Fluffy with Alice's regurgitated shoe.
• Defied:
  • Fluffy tries his hardest to swallow everything he eats.
  • Even after Fluffy spits Alice's shoes out, she refuses to stay down, and induces him to barf her back up.
• Discussed: "That dragon has gone and eaten Alice!" "But not her favorite shoes! Maybe he has some weird standards."
• Conversed: "Why do they always pick clothing for monsters to spit out? And is it supposed to imply the victim was digested? Digestion isn't that fast! Wait, perhaps it just… fell off in the struggle?"
• Implied: Alice enters Fluffy's den. When the den is revisited, there's no sign of Alice, but her signature Combat Stilettos are lying there.
• Deconstructed: Alice's shoes can't do anything that she did for the team, being inanimate objects, so they are only good as Tragic Keepsakes.
• Reconstructed: Alice's shoes are only mostly useless: Bob discovers later that she wrote plans in them for how best to proceed without her.
• Played for Laughs:
  • Fluffy eats Action Girl Alice and spits one of her shoes out. Afterward, Alice talks either from inside his stomach, or sticking her head out of his mouth, "Hey, Fluffy, you clearly have no taste in footwear!" And then he just swallows her again.
  • Fluffy eats Alice then spits out a shoe… and then her other shoe… And then her hair clip… and then her handbag… and then her dress.
• Played for Drama: Alice is a beloved character known for her unique taste in footwear. When she gets devoured it's treated as a Surprisingly Sudden Death. After the monster burps up her shoe, which has all the hallmarks of her fashion sense, it's treated to a lingering Dead Hat Shot accompanied by sad music, showing that she's been Killed Off for Real.
• Plotted a Good Waste. Fluffy threatens to eat Alice and spit out her shoes for her partners to see, but never makes good on that threat.
• Played for Horror:
  • Fluffy not only spits out Alice's shoes, but her bones as well!
  • Alice is grabbed in a Vertical Kidnapping with lots of Helpless Kicking as she's swallowed. Her friends run over to check on her but can't find her. Then her shoe is burped up and lands in front of her friends as a Jump Scare.
