Evil Sounds Raspy

Go To

Basic Trope: A villain has a raspy voice.

  • Straight: Master gangster Edward Evil has a scruffy, sandpapery voice that makes him sound sinister.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Edward Evil's voice has a guttural rasp which is subtle enough that it sounds sinister only to those who know his true nature beyond his facetiously charming personality.
    • Edward Evil is an Affably Evil criminal with a raspy voice.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Edward Evil's voice is very raspy when we first hear him speak, but when he clears his throat, his voice sounds perfectly normal.
  • Double Subverted: It soon turns out that Edward Evil's voice is naturally very raspy, as clearing his throat works for only a short period of time.
  • Parodied: Even though Edward Evil has a blatantly untrustworthy surname, people trust him without hesitation; but the second they hear him speak, they know that he is evil.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Edward Evil's voice sounds perfectly normal.
  • Lampshaded: "Good lord, Edward Evil's voice really makes my skin crawl."
  • Invoked: Edward Evil's voice usually sounds perfectly normal, but he speaks with a much raspier tone when threatening someone.
  • Defied: Edward Evil actively attempts to get the gravel out of his throat so that nobody will suspect that he is evil.
  • Discussed: "I don't know if he smokes, but Edward Evil has the raspiest voice I've ever heard."
  • Conversed: "Edward Evil is the meanest man I've ever seen." "And his voice is scratchier than sandpaper."
