Palworld

Go To

  • Unlike Pokemon, Palworld is intended for a much more mature audience, and while this manifests in both the setting and the plot, the Pals themselves are the primary source of terror in this universe. The islands where these mysterious beings call home is a savage and untamed alien landscape filled with unknown dangers, and the Pals themselves are a lot closer to intelligent wild animals than friendly monster companions. As a result, Palword can get away with saying the quiet part out loud for stuff that Pokémon could only imply, including the fact that Pals are more or less living weapons with deadly superpowers, and Pal Tamers are hardened survivalists just trying to live another day in a land where the only law is survival of the fittest. Some specific examples of scary Pal info found in the Paldeck can easily give players more than a few nights of restless sleep, such as:
    • #19 Daedream. It's a mischievous little imp that floats around at night and looks pretty cute as far as demonic monsters go. It also has the power to trap anyone it likes in an endless dream until they wither away and die, basically making it an almost child friendly version of a succubus. The worst part? It deliberately makes sure that its object of affection is trapped in eternal "happy" dreams, meaning it probably unintentionally condemns its best friends to a horrible fate not through malice but simple misguided affection thinking it's doing a good deed for them instead. That's just terrifying.
    • #21 Nox. Despite being one of the cuter Pals, this tiny creature harbors a horrific Berserk Button in that it does not like having its shed hair removed from a person's bed. Those who don't leave the hairs alone are subjected to a "never-ending-night" as punishment. What does this fate entail? Endless sleep? A literal permanent eclipse of the sun? Having their souls sucked? Simple death? It's deliberately kept vague so as to let the mind of the Pal Tamer fill in the blanks themselves.
    • #23 Killamari. At first glance, Killamari is a rather cute creature for one with such a horrible eating method... Then you unlock the ability to use one as a glider, and you'll see the utterly horrifying case of Lamprey Mouth on the underside, after which you'll understand very quickly how this thing can suck the brains and other organs out through their prey's skulls. Worse still, using Killamari as a glider puts you exactly where it wants you, with your head under its brain-sucking mouth.
      • Even worse is that it's Paldeck entry sheds a bit more light on what having their organs sucked out through their head actually does to the victims. The implied state of their corpses is... not pretty.
Paldeck Entry: It wraps itself around an enemy's head, sucking out their insides. Pal mummies are occasionally found, but these are in fact Killamari victims.
    • #38 Hangyu. There's no beating around the bush with this one: Hangyu's literal purpose is to kill, and it primarily served as an exceptionally brutal executioner in ancient times, where it would horrifically murder condemned criminals with its bare hands that are strong enough to rip through bones like they're made of twigs.
Paldeck Entry: Its gigantic arms can rip apart even iron. As a particularly cruel form of execution, serious criminals would be strung up in a public square, and a Hangyu would rip the skin from their bones.
    • #153 Splatterina. Compared to other Dark-type Pals, Splatterina is the cruelest creature in the game so far. According to its Paldeck entry, each has its own unique way of butchering its prey. Apparently, there have been some who have dismembered other parts of their unfortunate victims, meaning that they're still alive to feel the pain.
Paldeck Entry: It has an uncontrollable urge to tear its prey apart. Each individual has their own meticulous order for dismemberment. If caught by Splatterina, pray that your head is taken first.
  • Amione is an adorable pair of sea angels/cliones that look like they're designed by Sanrio, and are inseparable. Most of their animations are adorable to look at... and then there's their eating animation, which reveals that they have a Flower Mouth at the top of their heads, not unlike a real sea angel.
  • The oil rigs. For those who are unprepared, they will be shot down by a powerful laser beam if they attempt to use a flying mount to reach it. It's even worse if they don't have a surfing mount or if they can't get to shore quick enough before the laser hits them and knocks them out. The sound of the laser charging will freak them out before they realize it's coming from the rig. The Feybreak rig ups the stakes with the inclusion of an attack chopper as its boss, which will obliterate you if you're not careful.
  • Bjorn Seligsson's second and third diaries shed some light on what happened on the islands in the past, and it isn't pretty. Thousands of years ago, Bjorn's ancestors, the civilization responsible for the ruins scattered across the isles and the towers, faced something that almost wiped them out. According to Bjorn, the sky shattered as his ancestors fled for their lives, and some tried to stand their ground and fight back. The fighting got so bad that all the Legendary Pals on the islands got involved... and they still couldn't kill it. In the aftermath, Frostallion and Frostallion Noct sealed the islands in eternal winter and night, as noted in their bios; this act turned the region into the Closed Circle and Eldritch Location it is today, causing it to vanish from the map and preventing anyone or anything from (easily) entering or leaving. "The Paladin" split himself into Paladius and Necromus, ashamed of his failure and vowing never to show mercy again. Jetragon simply disappeared, while the others seemed to seal themselves away in various places. And the worst part? This thing's still there. Somewhere on the Palpagos Islands is a sleeping monster that could destroy the islands and the world if it wakes up again, and that time might be coming soon, as Bjorn thinks Jetragon's return is because it sensed the coming of that day.
    • As of version 1.0, it's revealed that he's right. The calamity, named Astralym, is waking up and intends to finish what it started; as the Final Boss, it's up to you to stop it before things get out of hand. Moreover, this thing's presence is indirectly the cause of Victor's increasingly-inhumane experiments - whatever the Tree and the Towers sealed, he feared that it had to be extremely powerful, and he needed a weapon that could stop it.
  • The Predator Pals. They are Alpha-sized Pals roaming around the world and are insanely powerful and are uncatchable. If you are unprepared and under-leveled, you may not survive fighting these creatures. The worst things about them are the sounds you hear when you're near them and they're not marked on your map. Unlike the bosses, you won't know where these things are and you might be running for your life if you're unfortunate enough to encounter one you can't win against. In the full release, Victor Ashford has studied them, and noted that they're low on the energies he detected in normal Pals. In other words, they're starving and they won't relent until you either put them down or become their lunch.
  • If you win against a bunch of hostile human NPCs, should you hang around a bit, a bunch of non-hostile Pals will approach their bodies, and if you listen carefully, you'll hear a munching sound, similar to when your Pals eat food... and soon the corpses disappear. Remember when the first NPC you encounter mentioned Pals eating humans? It's a dog-eat-dog life in Palpagos.
  • The island of Feybreak. While the other islands have some inhabited areas and ruins of deserted villages, there is hardly any trace of human life on Feybreak. The closest area you surf to is an ashy wasteland where you find blood-red pools, and you can find an abundance of Pal Souls everywhere in Feybreak. The grass itself is unusually colored with the first area being red grass and the arctic land where Bjorn’s tower rests has blue grass. You also run into several aggressive Pals in this area. This raises the question of what happened to the people who lived here, and if the Pals here were already aggressive or if something caused them to become aggressive towards humans.
