Chase This Light (Music)
"Will they breathe our air again?
Who will sing their blues for them?
"

I'll accept with poise, with grace
When they draw my name from the lottery
And they'll say, "All the salt in the world couldn't melt that ice."
I'm the one who gets away
I'm a New Jersey success story
And they'll say, "Lord, give me a chance to shake that hand."
—"Big Casino"

Gotta Be Somebody's Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: "Dizzy" gives a big one on the bridge:
You said you'd never have regrets
    Jesus, is there someone yet
Who got their wish; did you get yours, babe?
  • B-Side: "Beautiful Is" and "Open Bar Reception" were released as UK B-sides to "Big Casino". They were also released as international bonus tracks along "Be Sensible" and "Distraction" and their cover of "Take 'Em As They Come" by Bruce Springsteen.
  • Call-Back: "Dizzy" has one for the Futures album cover:
I tried, but it rang and rang, I called all night
On a payphone, remember those from another life?
  • Design Student's Orgasm: The album cover is basically the feather of a peacock front and center, so it can easily give this effect.
  • Either/Or Title: "Electable (Give It Up)".
  • Fading into the Next Song: The title track to "Firefight".
  • Gratuitous Panning: The intro to "Carry You".
  • Lighter and Softer: Compared to Futures, the previous, Chase This Light is a much poppier album by comparison, while still retaining some of the darker elements from it.
  • Lyrical Cold Open: The Title Track.
  • Lyrical Dissonance: The uplifting instrumental of "Feeling Lucky" is accompained by lyrics that describes a bunch of the misfortunes that the narrator has been dealt with.
  • Mythology Gag: "Big Casino" is named after Jim Adkins' previous side project Go Big Casino in the late 90's. Of note, "Carry You" originated in those Go Big Casino sessions.
  • Non-Appearing Title: "Big Casino" and "Let It Happen".
  • One-Word Title: "Firefight" and "Dizzy", as well the international bonus track "Distraction".
  • Title-Only Chorus: Partially applies to "Electable (Give It Up)", with a repeated "give it up" being the main chorus.

I'm alone in this
I'm as I've always been
Right behind what's happening
She's all lost in this
She's all like she'll always be
A little far for me to reach
