I can't help but imagine what things might be like...
"Alternate Realities
" is a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan-song written by Round Trip (best known for My Little Pony in a Nutshell) and performed by various artists, most prominently Ashley H, MuseScript, ChordKey, YeahButThenDragons, and Sparkle Chord. The song is about Twilight Sparkle wondering what it would be like if each of her friends became the Princess of Friendship instead of her. Each verse explores one of these realities.
This music video contains examples of:
- Adaptational Job Change:
- The premise is about Twilight imagining her friends as Princesses (including the males) and what they would do for the country if they're in charge.
- In Princess Pinkie Pie's Equestria, Mr. Cake and Mrs. Cake work as her personal chefs in making sweet foods.
- Alien Sky: Princess Pinkie Pie filled her Equestria's sky with glitter because she thought it looked cool.
- All-Loving Hero: As in canon, Princess Fluttershy is this. Her reign focuses on environmental preservation and giving homes to animals who need one.
- Animation Bump: While the characters are still stick figures, the animations are more slick than in the Nutshell series, and the ponies are constantly bending their knees.
- Creator Cameo: Round Trip voices Shining Armor's only line.
- Edible Ammunition: Princess Pinkie Pie won a war against Changelings by firing cupcakes out of a cannon.
- Funny Background Event: During Rarity's verse, she gives dresses to various ponies... and Smolder.
- The High Queen:
- Though the official title is "Princess", all of Twilight's friends in her imagined scenarios are this.
- Princess Rainbow Dash has turned the Royal Guard into a legitimate military and oversaw the invention of travel and communication technologies, like bullet trains and email.
- Princess Fluttershy focuses on preserving the environment and building animal shelters.
- Princess Rarity uses her business knowledge from running the Carousel Boutique to improve Equestria's economy, allowing everyone to afford better homes and better clothing.
- Princess Applejack expanded Equestria's trade and improved the country's infrastructures such as plumbing.
- Princess Pinkie Pie, in addition to making Equestria's skies super glittery for the Rule of Cool, used baked goods to win a war against the Changelings.
- Ironically, Twilight herself is this. She's the ruling Princess of Equestria, she's a kind, friendly mare who rules her country well and inspires her subjects despite her (often crippling) anxieties and self-doubts. It helps that her friends are always there to support her in times of need.
- Though the official title is "Princess", all of Twilight's friends in her imagined scenarios are this.
- Humble Hero: The song begins with Twilight saying that she's no more qualified to run Equestria than any of her friends.
- Laser Blade: All of the Royal Guards were armed with "magic laser swords" in Princess Rainbow Dash's Equestria.
- Modest Royalty:
- Twilight is both this and a Humble Hero. Despite being the sole ruler of one of the most powerful countries in the world, Twilight doesn't think highly of herself and even doubts that she can rule well. The song is essentially her imagining what Equestria would be like under her friends' rule and how better they would be as Princesses.
- Princess Fluttershy is shy, struggles to talk to people, and doesn't understand why people address her with royal titles. But she always strives to help her subjects as well as the various animals that live in Equestria, with Discord's support.
- Role Swap AU: The song is about how the other members of the Mane 6 would rule Equestria if they were the Princess of Friendship instead of Twilight.
- Rule of Cool: Princess Rainbow Dash's reign is full of this, giving the Royal Guards laser swords while overseeing the invention of bullet trains and email. Princess Pinkie Pie also makes Equestria's skies glittery for no other reason than because it's cool.
- She Is the King: Gender-Inverted and Played for Laughs at the end, which mentions "Princess... Shining Armor?", "Princess Spike", and "Princess Dad" (Night Light).
- True Companions: As in canon, the Mane Six are this. Twilight's imagined scenarios of her friends as benevolent Princesses shows that she regards all of them highly. When Twilight has a mental breakdown at the end, her friends show up to calm her down and assure her what a great job she's doing.
- You Are Better Than You Think You Are: At the end, Twilight has a mental breakdown over her insecurities from thinking about what could've been. Her friends come in and tell her that she's doing a good job as Princess, and that she can always call on them if she ever needs help. This calms Twilight down and makes her feel satisfied with how things are happening in the present.
