Tropes that revolve around family members outside the immediate parent-child/sibling dynamic. This includes aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and other relatives who may play pivotal roles in a character's life or the broader family dynamic.

General:

Grandparents/Grandchildren:

  • Doting Grandparent: A grandparent who's affectionate and spoils their grandchildren.
  • Grandma's Recipe: The most delicious recipes are that of dear old Grandma.
  • Grandparental Age Dissonance: A grandparent is a lot older or younger than they realistically should be.
  • Grandparental Obliviousness: A grandparent left in charge of their grandchildren is too senile to keep a proper eye on them.
  • Grandparent Favoritism: A grandparent who shares a close bond with/had a preference for their children's offspring that they don't (or didn't) have with their children.
  • Granny Classic: As wise as her years suggest, a great cook and baker, nurturing and lovely, often like a parent or confidant to you and your friends, and reliable even in the worst of times. That's grandma.
  • Gruesome Grandparent: A grandparent who is abysmal to their grandchildren.
  • I Want Grandkids: Parents who really want their children to have kids of their own.
  • Raised by Grandparents: A character is raised by their grandparents rather than their parents.
  • Stern Grandparent: A grandparent who is strict towards their grandchildren rather than spoiling or doting.
  • Three Successful Generations: A family trio consisting of child, parent, and grandparent, who have all achieved success.

Great-Grandparents & Beyond:

Aunts/Uncles and Nieces/Nephews:

  • Chaste Toons: Characters who have nieces and nephews but never any children of their own.
  • Cool Uncle: An uncle (or sometimes aunt) that is beloved by their niece/nephew.
  • Creepy Uncle: An uncle (or sometimes aunt) with an incestuous interest in his niece or nephew.
  • Evil Nephew: The villainous nephew who plots to murder his uncle.
  • Evil Uncle: The wicked uncle (or sometimes aunt) that mistreats their niece/nephew.
  • Maiden Aunt: An elderly female relative who, unlike her siblings, never married or had children.
  • Nephewism: A character lives with an aunt or an uncle without any explanation on where their parents are.
  • Older Nephew, Younger Uncle: A niece/nephew and their aunt/uncle are close in age, or the former is older than the latter.
