When it comes to humanized anthropomorphic animals, whether they are Funny Animals or essentially humans with animal traits, they are usually based on only one species of animal. If Interspecies Romance occurs between different species, one question that will naturally pop up among fans is the idea of what their kids would be like. Some stories avoid answering the question by not having animal characters of different species get together, while others answer it by having the children be the species of only one parent. However, some works decide to make it a fact that animal hybrids are a possibility.
Generally speaking, the in-story logic behind this trope is that while anthro animals might be based on different species of animals, the species they are based on function more like an ethnicity or a race than their biological species. Said children are usually half-and-half hybrids, but Uneven Hybrids aren't unheard of. In addition, it's also possible for said characters to be Artificial Hybrids rather than the result of sexual reproduction.
A Sub-Trope of Mix-and-Match Critter, though unlike most such critters, these types of creatures are usually treated less like monsters or feral animals and more like people. Sub-Trope of Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid. Might benefit from Hybrid Power or suffer from Hybrids Are a Crapshoot. Likely to suffer from Half-Breed Discrimination and/or Half-Breed Angst. While most are hybrids between two species, Heinz Hybrids are sometimes possible. Can sometimes result in Patchwork Kids.
Compare/Contrast Cartoon Creature, for creatures that often have traits of multiple animals, but it isn't clear what exactly they are. If it is obvious or explicitly stated what mix of creatures a character is, it falls under this trope. Otherwise, it's a Cartoon Creature.

- Beastars:
- Melon is the result of an Interspecies Romance between a leopard and a gazelle, giving him the body and horns of a gazelle with the face, tail and spots of a leopard. It's also deconstructed, as having the characteristics and instincts of such drastically different animals has made his life extremely difficult due to his unusual biology causing him health problems such as an inability to taste due to having both carnivore and herbivore taste buds, no sex drive, and having both an herbivore's fear of predators and a carnivore's desire to kill (but not eat) herbivores.
- On Legoshi's mother's side, his grandfather is a komodo dragon and his grandmother was a wolf. His mother had him via a one-night stand with a pure-blood wolf, making Legoshi 25% komodo dragon and 75% wolf. His interspecies ancestry also makes him immune to his grandfather's poison, which is normally lethal to other species, and depending on the situation, can have properties akin to Hollywood Acid. To him, it tastes like bitter and sweet marmalade.
- Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE: The inhabitants of Eldora feature both canine and feline characteristics. Some characters like Maiya, for example, leans heavily into Cat Girl territory.
- Smile PreCure!: Pop the anthropomorphic fairy has the body of a lion as well as a fox's tail.
- Tenchi Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki. She's a rabbit-like alien with a cat's head and ears as long as her body that makes cat noises. Fans refer to her as a "cabbit" — a cat/rabbit hybrid. She has multiple forms actually: a starship, a Mini-Mecha form, and a humanoid form in the OVA, but she's mainly known for her cute cabbit appearance.
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Viral is a Beast Man who, unlike the others, is based on two animals, having a shark's fangs and a cat's eyes and paws. In Viral's case he's an Artificial Hybrid because Beast Men are an artificial race created by Lordgenome and are incapable of biological reproduction.
- Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode: Berry Shirayuki is unique among the Mews in that her transformed state has her expressing traits from two animals rather than one. Specifically as Mew Berry, she grows the ears of an Amami rabbit and the tail of an Andean mountain cat.
Comic Books
- Dungeon: The Early Years: Most of the inhabitants of Terra Amata are anthropomorphic animals, so relationships between different species occasionally happen, resulting in hybrid offspring. Notable examples include Eric, the son of Horous (a vulture) and the Duchess of La Hure (a sow), who looks like a vulture with pig ears, as well as Papsukal and Zakutu, the children of Herbert (a duck) and Isis (a cat), who look like birds with cat-like ears.
- Maus: The offspring of a German (cat) and a Jew (mouse) are something in-between. Of course, the story is told through a Furry Lens, so they're all "humans".
- Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics): Prior to the Genesis reboot, Sally Acorn was a humanoid hybrid of a squirrel and a chipmunk, with her mother being a chipmunk and her father a squirrel. Following the Genesis wave, her species was changed to pure chipmunk — although her father remains a squirrel, an odd quirk with births during the reboot is that children can be born either hybrids or pure species inheriting only cosmetic differences.
- Spider-Boy: After already creating multiple human-animal hybrids, Madame Monstrosity takes it a step further and transforms a boy named Eli into a humanoid elephant-rhino hybrid named Hellifino.
Fan Works
- Creepin' It Real: Dr. Schnitzelhosen makes a clone of Sonic the Hedgehog using his lizard son Francis's DNA. The result is a hedgehog/lizard hybrid called Buddy, and his species is known as a "hedgehoguana" (with his werecreature form being known as a werehoguana).
- A Hedgehog of Many Colors: Tomo is a Mobian whose species is that of a werewolf/shark/hedgehog mix.
- Legacy of Thieves:
- Sly and Carmelita's children, Sylvia and Carlos, are raccoons like Sly but have Carmelita's fox fur color.
- Murray and Jing's son Dylan is a hippo like his father but has his mother's panda fur and markings. The story even calls him a "Hippanda".
- Averted with Gerald and Hannah, the son and daughter of Bentley, a turtle, and Penelope, a mouse, as they are a turtle and a mouse respectively.
- My Huntsman Academia: Unlike in RWBY canon, where Faunus can only have traits from one type of animal, mixed-Faunus relationships in this setting can produce hybrids instead of a Random Species Offspring. Mina is the most prominent example, being a Faunus mixed with so many animals that even doesn't know what exactly she is.
- In SilverAndKaylee15's Sonic the Hedgehog fan works, Kaylee Collie looks like her mother, who is a collie dog, but her species is stated to be a hedgehog-dog hybrid.
Films — Animation
- Beauty and the Beast (1991): Animator Glen Keane designed the Beast in a way that ideally mixes traits of other animals, yet makes his overall form seem unique and otherworldly. According to Keane, while the Beast's overall physique is vaguely humanoid, the shape of his head and beard was based on that of buffalo, with the massive body of a bear, the cranium of a gorilla, the muzzle/tusks of a boar, the mane of a lion, and the legs and tail of a wolf. But his eyes are those of a human, a reminder of the prince trapped within this beastly body.
- The Chickenhare films star, as the name suggests, a character with a hare's upper half and a chicken's lower half.
- Inside Out: Bing Bong is half cat and half elephant. He mostly resembles an elephant besides his fluffy tail and whiskers.
Films — Live-Action
- Muppets Most Wanted: At one point, Miss Piggy has an Imagine Spot about her and Kermit having children. One of them is a green pig while the other is a pink frog, but other than that, they don't have any other hybrid traits.
Literature
- Krokodil Und Giraffe: This German picture book series by Daniela Kulot centers around an anthropomorphic giraffe and crocodile who become biological mother and father respectively to two hybrid children: a son who appears as a giraffe with green skin like his father, and a daughter who appears as a crocodile with yellow skin like her mother.
- Little Critter: Zach in the book Just a Little Different is half rabbit on his mother's side and half turtle on his father's, so he looks like a rabbit with a shell.
Live-Action TV
- The Wheel of Time (2021): Trollocs are a monstrous fusion of human and animal stock, created to be the Shadow's foot soldiers. While the original books tend to portray them as a variety of Beast Men, the show sometimes makes them even more of a mishmash, like a single trolloc with antlers and a fanged beak.
Tabletop Games
- Urban Jungle: The "Astounding Science" supplement introduces the Hybrid type that gives a character a second species trait with the associated skills and gifts. The accompanying page illustration shows a fox with shark fins and teeth.
- Yu-Gi-Oh!: Master of Oz is a Fusion Monster whose Fusion Materials are Big Koala, a giant koala, and Des Kangaroo, a green, anthropomorphic kangaroo. Master of Oz itself is a giant, anthropomorphic, green koala with a kangaroo tail and pouch.
Video Games
- Crash Bandicoot: While most of the Evolved Animals are made from one type of animal, some of them were made with two animals. They are:
- Dingodile, who is an anthropomorphic dingo with a crocodile tail.
- Rilla Roo, who is a gorilla with a kangaroo tail.
- Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil has Lolo. She has a monkey-like face and ears, while her tail and hairstyle give her a lion-like appearance. It was eventually confirmed that Lolo and her species (such as The High Priestess and Leorina) are humanoid monkeys.
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: The Zonai tribe, who were foreshadowed in the previous game, are shown to be anthropomorphic animals that have dragon-like scales and claws, goat-like horns, and rabbit-like ears.
- Pokémon Infinite Fusion: Due to the game's premise, it's possible to create humanoid fusions that are based on two or more animal-based Pokemon. Some examples include:
- Ponyduck, a fusion of a Ponyta (pony) and a Golduck (humanoid duck) that retains a Golduck's overall shape and claws with a Ponyta's hooves for legs, tail, and coloration. It also has Ponyta's head, but shaped like a Golduck's, which results in the front of its muzzle looking like a duck bill.
- Delbusken, a fusion of a Delphox (humanoid fox) and a Combusken (humanoid chicken) that resembles a Combusken with a Delphox's face in place of Combusken's.
- Seapunny, a fusion of a Lopunny (humanoid rabbit) and a Sealeo (a sea lion), that has Lopunny's body shape and long ears, with Sealeo's coloration, fins in place of paws, and tail.
- Ninedon, a fusion between a Ninetales (nine-tailed fox) and a Rhydon (humanoid rhino), who has the former's nine tails, red eyes, and fur combined with the latter's body and horns.
- Zuth, a fusion between a Meowth (humanoid cat) and a Zubat (bat), which resembles a Meowth with a Zubat's coloration and wings.
- Ponyduck
- Sonic the Hedgehog: Fang the Hunter was initially stated to be a hybrid between a wolf and a jerboa, but as of Sonic Superstars, he was retconned into being a pure jerboa.
- The Boss Monsters in Undertale most obviously resemble goats (long face, horns, floppy ears), but differ to the point Gerson will actually be confuse when asked if Asgore is a goat. They have fangs, paws, are truly omnivorous rather than very aggressive herbivores (Toriel's favorite food is snail), and Asgore has a leonine mane (though his son Asriel's Older Alter Ego does not). They can be compared to the Classical Chimera or Big Red Devil, especially since they all use fire magic.

- Bee and Puppycat: As the name implies, Puppycat is essentially a fusion of a cat and a dog.
- Helluva Boss:
- Unlike the other Seven Deadly Sins who are based on a single animal, Beelzebub is based on two, that of a fox and a bee, being an anthropomorphic fox with bee-like traits such as wings, antennae, and having four arms instead of two.
- Downplayed with Asmodeus and Mammon; Ozzie is mostly based on a rooster, but he has the head of both a bull and a goat in his feathery mane, and Mammon is mostly based on a spider (and a Christmas tree), but also has centipede traits when he's in One-Winged Angel mode.
- Toon Turf: Since their mother's a rabbit and their father's a monkey, Riggy and Jordan are both "runkeys" with rabbit ears and monkey tails, while their sister Molly is a "mabbit" with monkey ears and a rabbit tail. Upon moving to Toonville, Riggy faces a lot of confusion from its residents wondering what he is.

- Feathers and Fur is set in a world made up of Feathers (anthropomorphic birds) and Furs (anthropomorphic mammals). The main character Samuel is a rare hybrid between the two, and is purely black with a tail and a pointed face. He gets a lot of unwanted attention for it, such as his coworker asking if he has a beak or a snout.
- Freefall: Florence is outwardly an anthropomorphic uplifted wolf. However, it turns out that it takes a lot of under-the-hood tinkering to fit a lupine body to a humanoid shape, so her genome draws on everything from bears (for their wrists) to hero shrews (for their spines).
Dr. Bowman: Probably made you clumsy as a puppy, but I think you'll agree that having wrists when you grew up was worth it.
- I Will Survive: Judy mentions that when two animals have children together, the child will end up becoming a hybrid (if a sheep and a goat have a child, the latter will look like a fluffy goat, for example). This is part of the reason she's reluctant to carry on with her pregnancy; there has never been a predator/prey hybrid before and she's afraid of how the child will turn out.
- Karin-dou 4koma: Catherine is half fire-eating bird and half dog youkai. The result is a dog-eared girl with wings for arms that she can somehow use as large beefy hands.
- Kevin & Kell:
- Coney looks like her rabbit father Kevin's family, but has her wolf mother Kell's dietary habits, carnivore teeth, and predator skills.
- Turvy mostly looks like bat father Fenton, but has hedgehog mother Lindesfarne's quills.
- Savanna mostly looks like lion mother Leona, but has rhino father Carl's horn (albeit retractable like feline claws) and size (which required her to be born via C-section).
- Harvey Hopper, a mix between a rabbit and coyote, with Donna thinking the hybrid was part of one of her parents being a coyote, and Edward being a coyote receiving surgery to become a rabbit physically.
- Various minor characters tend to be hybrids, especially if they're part of anti-hybrid organizations
- Puppitty the Multiracial Experience is a webcomic about Puppitty, who's a hybrid between a cat and a dog. The comic itself is a metaphor for how society treats mixed-race people, with Puppitty herself experiencing things like being othered, people insisting she identify as a cat or a dog, and receiving racist comments from other kids' parents.
- Sabrina Online: Zig-Zag and her siblings are three-fourths skunk and a quarter white tiger, with the latter half coming from their maternal grandfather. Zig-Zag's family is a notable aversion of All Genes Are Codominant, as while Zig-Zag herself resembles a skunk with black and white tiger stripes over her body, her siblings just look like skunks, and their mother only has tiger stripes on her forearms.
- Sonic: Into, Across and Beyond!:
- Mr. Needlemouse is an alternate Sonic, with one of his differences being that he's half-hedgehog half-rabbit rather than being a full hedgehog.
- Emi Leafy is half-rabbit, half-fox.
- Tamberlane: The cast includes several named characters who are multi-species hybrids in addition to single species ones. Examples include Belfry (bat + squirrel + ringtail cat), Tess (badger + bear), Briar (deer + badger + bear), and Kira (cow + collie + alligator). One Q&A page explains that first generation hybrids tend to favor one species over another, while hybrids of three or more species display more blended traits. As an example Tess looks like a badger with no discernible bear traits, while her daughter Briar looks like a badger with brown fur and antlers.
- TwoKinds: Deconstructed; Kathrin Vaughan, Eric Vaughan's adopted Keidran sister, is the end-product of selective breeding for sex appeal to human standards (the dark implications of what her life would be like if Eric didn't care so deeply for her being pointedly ignored), and has ancestry from both feline and canine Keidran sub-species, making her resemble neither one especially closely. However, this made her barren, similar to other hybrids of barely-related bloodlines (ex: mules). While she's happy that she never has to deal with estrus, she is a little sad that she'll never have children of her own.

- DeviantArt: The group HybridAnthro is focused on this type of artwork. It includes anthro versions of mythological monster hybrids such as griffins and chimeras, as well as customized hybrids from artist's imaginations.
- FurBooru: The hybrid tag focuses on these types of characters. In addition to hybrids of normal anthros, there are also many pictures of anthro Pokémon, which includes anthro hybrids which combine Pokémon with normal animals as well as with other Pokémon, and occasionally Digimon or Pals.
- Reddit: The Furry Fandom subreddit r/furry has some art of this kind, with bunny + moth, musk deer + bat, and raccoon + jackal hybrids being just a few of many examples.
- Smallscale: This post explains how the Miinu, a race of insect-like humanoids, reproduce and explains that while different species of Miinu can reproduce, the results tend to depend on how closely the two parents are related. The results for different couples include:
- Different kin couples, such as ladybugs and Luna moths, don't produce true hybrids but the children tend to adopt superficial traits such as markings, body traits, and colors from one parent while their species comes from another.
- Similar kin couples, such as Northern House Mosquitos and Sobbethes Mosquitos, produce partially hybrid children that have a random mixture of colors and markings.
- Different species couples, such as Joro Spiders and Mantisflies, can produce true hybrids, but they are rare due to differing biologies, and are usually sterile and suffer from health conditions.

- Tales Unwritten: The chapalu race have traits borrowed from D&D's tabaxi, being a race of Cat Folk (with parts inspired by the bog-dwelling Cath Palug from Celtic Mythology), have long ears like rabbits, but also have the ability to swim like otters. Some of the chapalu that the heroes free in Episode 5 act a bit like Playful Otters, swimming away in joy.
Western Animation
- Alfred J. Kwak: Dolf is half-crow and half-blackbird. He passes as a crow except for having a yellow beak, which he paints black with shoe polish because he fears becoming a target of racism if anybody finds out he's mixed species.
- Arthur: Emily's mother is a rabbit while her father is a monkey. Emily herself resembles a rabbit whose jawline is more akin to that of a monkey's than that of other rabbit characters.
- Chowder: Both Chowder and Panini are stated by C.H. Greenblatt to be a mix between a rabbit, a bear, and a cat, though they also have raccoon-like tails which would make them a mixture of at least four species. Chowder generally looks more feline-like, having with his ears looking like a mixture between those of a bear's and a rabbit's, with his facial features resembling those of a cat's. Panini is more rabbit-like with her longer ears, her only feline traits are her mouth, and she doesn't have any characteristics of a bear.
- Family Guy: Darkly parodied in a Cutaway Gag from "Into Harmony's Way", in which Miss Piggy and Kermit have a son who is a horribly deformed half-pig, half-frog abomination who wishes to die.
- Hazbin Hotel: Most Sinner Demons have an Animal Motif that causes them to resemble the animal they are based on. Husk has two animal traits, those of a cat and a bird, and resembles an anthropomorphic cat with bird wings, a feathered tail tip like a dinosaur and giant red feathers for eyebrows.
- Legends of Chima: Reegull is a half-raven/half-eagle hybrid who is viewed as an outcast, even by his raven mother and eagle father, for not fitting in with either of his species and his inability to fly.
- Let’s Go, Bananas!: Stellar and Piper Tiger-Zelle are the offspring of a gazelle father and a tiger mother. As a result, they resemble tigers with gazelle antlers.
- Loonatics Unleashed: Villains The Ringmaster and Otto the Odd capture the six heroes, and use a device to conduct LEGO Genetics on them. The Loonatics are already Funny Animal superheroes; the device adds DNA from other species to theirs, creating bizarre hybrids. Ace Bunny gets the antlers of a moose and the spotted coat of a leopard, for one. Fortunately, they are able to seize control of the device later that day to un-mix their genomes to return to normal.
- Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM): According to Ben Hurst, who wrote for the series, Sally Acorn is meant to be a humanoid hybrid of a fox and a squirrel, with her father being the fox and her mother the squirrel.
- T.U.F.F. Puppy: Dudley Puppy is a downplayed example who also averts All Dogs Are Purebred, being an anthropomorphic dog who is stated to be a mixture of every known dog breed, which grants him Hybrid Power in the form of having the best traits of said breeds.
- We Baby Bears: Unica is half-unicorn (from her father) and half-donkey (from her mother). She basically looks like a donkey with the horn and ears of a unicorn.
- The Wuzzles: Every character is one of these, with the bumblebee/lion Bumblelion, the butterfly/bear Butterbear, and the hippopotamus/rabbit Hoppopotamus being a few examples. Crocosaurus is an informed example of this, as while the show claims he's a dinosaur/crocodile hybrid, he looks more like an anthropomorphic crocodile with no dinosaur traits.
