Playing with Fire (2019) (Film)

A 2019 American family comedy directed by Andy Fickman that has a group of firefighters (John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo, and Tyler Mane) taking in some children (Brianna Hildebrand, Christian Convery, and Finley Rose Slater) after rescuing them from a fire and Hilarity Ensues.

The movie also stars Dennis Haysbert, Judy Greer, and Daniel Cudmore.

It was released on November 8, 2019.

Tropes for the film:

  • Abbey Road Crossing: Jake and his team, crossing an avenue when they go after a gift for Zoey.
  • Action-Hero Babysitter: Jake "Supe" Carson (Cena). He's the rugged and manly firefighter, they're the three kids that have to stay in the fire station until their parents are found.
  • Actor Allusion:
    • John Leguizamo's character of Lieutenant Rodrigo Torres mentions Romeo and Juliet. Leguizamo played Tybalt in the 1996 film adaptation.
    • Shortly after the kids arrive at the depot, the Captain says to Axe, "Come on, man! I've seen you fight a wolverine!" Tyler Mane and Daniel Cudmore previously appeared in the X-Men film series and features a character named Wolverine.
    • Dennis Haysbert, who plays Commander Bill Richards, is a spokesperson for Allstate commercials which deals with insurance like house fires.
  • Bathroom Break-Out: Jake's last dinner with Amy ended with him "going to the bathroom and never coming back".
  • Blunt Metaphors Trauma: Rodrigo has a tendency to misquote idioms, or saying phrases that are not idioms at all.
  • Calling Your Bathroom Breaks: Zoey announces to everyone that she feels a “boom-boom” coming. With only a brief time to wonder what it means, she poops.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Supe uses the laser pointer at the beginning to lead the extinguisher plane. Later in the film, he gives the pointer to Will as a gift, saying "If you need us, this will help us find you". And indeed, Will uses it in the climax, when he and his sisters get stuck near the cliff.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: The character of Axe (or the way the character is presented) bears quite a few similarities to the character Grossberger in 1980's Stir Crazy, played by the late Erland Van Lidth De Jeude. Like Axe, Grossberger is also a lovable gentle giant, and although everybody is scared of his size and imposing presence, he's actually very protective of those around him. He never speaks in the film (just like the Axe character) and the only time he makes a sound is a scene where he sings with a lovely voice, also exactly like the Axe character.
    • Crosses into Meaningful Name here, but Grossberger also holds the record of "most axe murders in the Southwest", so even the "Axe" moniker is related to him.
  • Diaper Change: The firefighters have to change Zoey's diaper after she poops in it. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Gassy Gastronomy: The spam brulee is this, as it's only a few minutes after eating it that Zoey has to poop. One of the firefighters even notices the bits of spam brulee when he smells Zoey's poop.
  • Insistent Terminology: They're not firefighters, they're smokejumpers. "There's over a million firefighters and only 336 smokejumpers". Lampshaded by Dr. Hicks when Supe calls the western spring toad a "frog".
    Dr. Hicks: They're toads.
    Supe: Same thing.
Dr. Hicks: Like firefighters and smokejumpers?
  • Not Now, Kiddo: As Brynn is driving away from being taken away by Child Services, Zoey repeats "bunny". Believing she was talking about her plushie, Brynn replies "we'll get you another bunny". She was alerting of an impending rabbit on the road.
  • Screaming at Squick: The firefighters open Zoey’s diaper to change her but the sight of her bottom covered in feces makes them scream in terror.
  • Shout-Out: There are frequent references to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic as the kids are seen watching an episode of the show and Axe, who is usually quiet, sings a version of the song.
  • Tinkle in the Eye: During the diaper change, Zoey poops some more. When Jake's sleeve is next to her butt when he's wiping her, she unleashes one more round of feces that go up his sleeve and into his face..
  • Toilet Paper Substitute: The firefighters are caught off guard by Zoey needing a diaper change. Once the diaper has been removed, they don't have any wipes to clean her backside, so they use a spare shirt.
  • Urine Trouble: Sparkle Pony, the firehouse dog, pees on Commander Richards' shoe. He was actually putting out a fire that was on it.
