The Ultimate Test (Fanfic)

The Ultimate Test is a Johnny Test One-Shot Fic/Self-Insert Fic written by gelefant.

After his parents die in a car accident while out running errands in Porkbelly, ten-year-old Jermaine Carter (the author) is placed into foster care and ends up being fostered by the Test family.

Artwork for the fanfic can be found here, here, and here.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Hand-Hold: Jermaine and Sissy end up unintentionally holding hands while reaching for the popcorn Hugh made for them for the two preteens' Valentine's Day movie marathon. They blush and gaze into each other's eyes, which transform into red hearts, for several seconds. They then lean in towards each other and share a passionate kiss.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: While Lila's still a caring and loving mother, she's not overprotective of Mary and Susan like she was in canon. By the same token, Lila doesn't smother Jermaine after he becomes her Foster Kid.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • Hugh isn't an abusive father to his Foster Kid Jermaine like he was towards Johnny in canon. Instead, Hugh welcomes Jermaine into his home with open arms and wants to make sure the boy's as comfortable as possible. Additionally, Hugh tells Jermaine that he considers him the son he never had after the Tests announce that they're officially adopting Jermaine.
    • Neither Mary nor Susan are a Big Sister Bully to Jermaine like they were towards Johnny in canon. Instead, the twins are as accommodating and welcoming of Jermaine as their parents are. The twins also tell Jermaine that their lab is always open to him and even offer to let him test out any new inventions they create. Additionally, the twins tell Jermaine that they think of him as a brother after the Tests announce that they're officially adopting him.
  • Adapted Out: Johnny himself is absent from the story.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Not long after Jermaine starts sixth grade at Porkbelly Jr. High, he begins to be bullied by many of his classmates because he loves Tiny'mon and is considered too quiet by others. The bullying is mostly emotional and verbal. However, he's occasionally hit, punched, slapped, or tackled.
  • Apathetic Teacher/Sadist Teacher: Jermaine's teachers rarely do anything about the bullying he endures and are frequently annoyed by him coming to them with his problems.
  • Bear Hug: At the end of the story, Mrs. Blakely (Sissy's mother) embraces Jermaine and Sissy in a Group Hug after the two preteens tell her about their Relationship Upgrade. The hug soon becomes a bear hug because of how tightly Mrs. Blakely squeezes Jermaine and Sissy.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Near the end of the story, Jermaine and Sissy lean in towards each other and share a passionate kiss after having Accidental Hand-Hold, Luminescent Blush, and Held Gaze moments (the last of which is accompanied by Wingding Eyes) during their Valentine's Day movie marathon. Jermaine and Sissy are boyfriend and girlfriend from this point on.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: The tall, athletic Sissy playfully punches Jermaine's arm before kissing his cheek after he assures her that she's one of the smartest and most beautiful girls he knows following her apologizing for all the teasing she subjected him to and explaining that said teasing was basically her projecting her insecurities about her intelligence onto him.
  • Chocolate of Romance: During the first half of the story, Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy comes by the Test house and attempts to give his crush Susan a heart-shaped box of chocolates. As usual, she rejects the gesture. On Valentine's Day, Jermaine surprises Sissy (who he's been crushing on since the previous summer) with a box of chocolates after inviting her over to his house for the holiday. She responds by gasping, blushing, and smiling from ear to ear.
  • Christmas Episode: Part of the fanfic happens on Christmas Day. Jermaine and Sissy exchange gifts. She buys him the newest Tiny'mon games- Jade and Crystal. He gets her a snowball-making machine that Mary and Susan invented specifically for Sissy. After the gift exchange, Jermaine and Sissy have a snowball fight.
  • Darker and Edgier: Although the fanfic is largely as lighthearted and whimsical as its source material, the fanfic begins with Jermaine's parents dying in a car accident and him being placed into foster care due to no longer having any living relatives to stay with (all four of his grandparents are long dead, and he doesn't know anything about his aunts and uncles).
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Jermaine's parents die in a car accident while out running errands in Porkbelly. During his first night with his foster family the Tests, Jermaine pulls his phone out of his pocket and scrolls through the pictures he took with his parents. He gets misty-eyed doing so. He misses them, but he feels like the Tests will be a good family to him. Later on, Jermaine gets teary-eyed after the Tests tell him how proud they are of him for defeating Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy and saving Porkbelly because Jermaine's biological parents are the only ones who ever said that they were proud of him. Once the Tests announce that they're officially adopting Jermaine, the Tests tell him that his birth parents would be proud of the person he's becoming. Jermaine cries Tears of Joy as he hugs the Tests. Jermaine states that he will always love and miss his birth parents, but he's excited to have a new family now.
  • Flight: Mary and Susan use a large machine to give Dukey and Jermaine the ability to fly (along with Super-Speed and Super-Strength) to battle Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy as the latter rampages through downtown Porkbelly in a Humongous Mecha. Dukey and Jermaine use their flight powers to easily avoid the mecha's lasers.
  • Flowers of Romance: During the first half of the story, Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy comes by the Test house and attempts to give his crush Susan a bouquet of flowers. As usual, she rejects the gesture. On Valentine's Day, Jermaine surprises Sissy (who he's been crushing on since the previous summer) with a bouquet of red roses after inviting her over to his house for the holiday. She responds by gasping, blushing, and smiling from ear to ear.
  • Foster Kid: After Jermaine's parents die in a car accident while out running errands in Porkbelly, he's placed into foster care because he no longer has any living relatives to stay with (all four of his grandparents are long dead, and he doesn't know anything about his aunts and uncles). He ends up being fostered by the Test family, who welcome him into their home with open arms and want to make sure he's as comfortable as possible. As a token of good faith, the Tests buy him Johnny's canonical normal outfit, which Jermaine appreciates. On Jermaine's eleventh birthday, the Tests announce that they're officially adopting him. Jermaine gasps and smiles from ear to ear. As part of the adoption process, Jermaine legally changes his last name from Carter to Test. Jermaine's excited to have a new family now.
  • Gasp!: During the first half of the story, Jermaine gasps and smiles from ear to ear after the Tests announce that they're officially adopting him. Later on, Sissy gasps and blushes after he assures her that she's one of the smartest and most beautiful girls he knows following her apologizing for teasing him because of her insecurities about her intelligence. On Valentine's Day, she gasps, blushes, and smiles from ear to ear once he gives her a bouquet of red roses and a box of chocolates.
  • Group Hug: Once Dukey and Jermaine return home from beating Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy and saving Porkbelly, the Tests embrace them in a big group hug while telling the dog and boy how proud they are of them. Several months later, Jermaine hugs the Tests (Dukey included) after they announce that they're officially adopting him. At the end of the story, Mrs. Blakely (Sissy's mother) embraces Jermaine and Sissy in a group hug after the two preteens tell her about their Relationship Upgrade. The hug soon becomes a Bear Hug because of how tightly Mrs. Blakely squeezes Jermaine and Sissy.
  • Halloween Episode: Part of the fanfic happens on Halloween. Jermaine and Sissy go trick-or-treating. They have coordinated costumes. He's a knight, and she's a princess or queen (he can't tell which). After trick-or-treating, they watch a werewolf film.
  • Happily Adopted: On Jermaine's eleventh birthday, the Test family announce that they're officially adopting the Foster Kid. Jermaine gasps and smiles from ear to ear. Hugh and Lila say that they always considered Jermaine the son they never had. By the same token, Dukey, Mary, and Susan tell Jermaine that they think of him as a brother. The Tests are elated to finally make things official. As part of the adoption process, Jermaine legally changes his last name from Carter to Test.
  • Held Gaze: Jermaine and Sissy gaze into each other's eyes, which transform into red hearts, for several seconds after their Accidental Hand-Hold moment during their Valentine's Day movie marathon.
  • Humongous Mecha: Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy rampages through downtown Porkbelly in a giant mecha after Susan romantically rejects him again. The mecha is impervious to guns, lasers, and tanks. The mecha can also fire lasers and laser beams. The mecha is only destroyed when Dukey and Jermaine use the Super-Strength they got from Mary and Susan to crush the mecha's fists before tearing the mecha itself apart piece by piece.
  • Insecure Love Interest: After Jermaine develops a crush on Sissy, he's apprehensive about confessing his feelings to her. He feels like he's not good enough for her because of her athleticism, beauty, and intellect. At the end of the story, he admits this to her once they have The Big Damn Kiss following Accidental Hand-Hold, Luminescent Blush, and Held Gaze moments (the last of which is accompanied by Wingding Eyes) during their Valentine's Day movie marathon. She thanks him for his kind words, says he doesn't need to downplay or ignore his own positive qualities, and tells him he's an AWESOME guy.
  • Love Confession: Near the end of the story, Sissy tells Jermaine that she loves him after she gives him a rousing You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech following him explaining why he didn't confess his romantic feelings to her sooner. He says he loves her, too. Right before this, the two preteens have Accidental Hand-Hold, Luminescent Blush, and Held Gaze moments (the last of which is accompanied by Wingding Eyes) that lead up to The Big Damn Kiss.
  • Loving Bully: Implied. After Jermaine first meets Sissy during sixth grade at Porkbelly Jr. High, they don't get along at all. This is primarily because she's the school's smartest student and feels threatened by him since his intellect rivals hers. As a result, she sometimes teases him. Near the end of the story, she tells him that she always thought he was kinda cute after they have The Big Damn Kiss following Accidental Hand-Hold, Luminescent Blush, and Held Gaze moments (the last of which is accompanied by Wingding Eyes) during their Valentine's Day movie marathon.
  • Luminescent Blush: Sissy blushes after Jermaine assures her that she's one of the smartest and most beautiful girls he knows following her apologizing for the teasing she subjected him to and explaining that said teasing was basically her projecting her insecurities about her intellect onto him. She blushes again once he gives her a bouquet of red roses and a box of chocolates on Valentine's Day. Later on, she and Jermaine blush when they end up unintentionally holding hands while reaching for the popcorn Hugh made for them for their movie marathon.
  • Manly Tears: Jermaine cries twice during the story. He cries uncontrollably after his parents die in a car accident while out running errands in Porkbelly. He cries Tears of Joy after the Test family announce that they're officially adopting him.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • As a token of good faith, the Tests buy Jermaine a new outfit after he becomes their Foster Kid. Said outfit is comprised of a short-sleeved blue jacket, a black T-shirt emblazoned with a yellow radioactive symbol, olive green cargo pants, and black-and-white hi top shoes. The Tests also give Jermaine a black-and-green wristwatch. The outfit and watch make up Johnny's normal canonical design.
    • The middle portion of the story takes some cues from the canon episode "Johnny vs. Bling-Bling 3."
    • The Tiny'mon games that Sissy buys Jermaine for Christmas, Jade and Crystal, appeared in the canon episodes "Johnny'mon" and "Return of Johnny'mon."
  • Nigh-Invulnerability/Super-Toughness: Mary and Susan use a large machine to give Dukey and Jermaine invulnerability (along with Flight, Super-Speed, and Super-Strength) to battle Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy as the latter rampages through downtown Porkbelly in a Humongous Mecha. After Eugene fires a massive laser beam from the mecha's chest towards Jermaine at point-blank range, Jermaine is unscathed.
  • Parental Relationship Approval: Jermaine's parents really want their son to be together with Sissy. After Jermaine tells Hugh and Lila about his crush on Sissy, the two parents encourage Jermaine to tell Sissy how he feels. At the end of the story, the parents walk in and look on with warm smiles after Jermaine and Sissy have The Big Damn Kiss and a Relationship Upgrade during their Valentine's Day movie marathon. Once Jermaine and Sissy tell the latter's mother about their new romantic relationship, Mrs. Blakely embraces the two preteens in a Group Hug that soon becomes a Bear Hug because of how tightly Mrs. Blakely squeezes them.
  • Platonic Kissing: Sissy kisses Jermaine on the cheek after he assures her that she's one of the smartest and most beautiful girls he knows following her apologizing for the teasing she subjected him to and explaining that said teasing was basically her projecting her insecurities about her intellect onto him. The kiss catches him off-guard.
  • The Quiet One: Jermaine is largely a quiet person, and this is one of the reasons he began to be bullied during sixth grade.
  • Relationship Upgrade: At the end of the story, Jermaine and Sissy become a couple after sharing two passionate kisses and having Accidental Hand-Hold, Luminescent Blush, and Held Gaze moments (the last of which is accompanied by Wingding Eyes).
  • Ship Tease: Has its own page here.
  • Shipper on Deck: Jermaine's family really want their son to be together with Sissy. After Jermaine tells his family about his crush on Sissy, they encourage him to tell Sissy how he feels about her. Dukey even goes so far as to say that Jermaine's in love with Sissy. Since Sissy and Jermaine are just preteens, he seriously doubts that he loves her and becomes a bit flustered by Dukey's suggestion. However, Jermaine doesn't get angry or even annoyed at Dukey because he knows that he's just trying to help. In spite of his family's urging, Jermaine's apprehensive about confessing his feelings to Sissy. He feels like he's not good enough for her due to her athleticism, beauty, and intellect. After he admits this to his family, they tell him that feelings and relationships are complicated. As such, his family also say that they won't try to force or pressure him into coming clean about his crush to Sissy. At the end of the story, the Tests walk in and look on with warm smiles after Jermaine and Sissy have The Big Damn Kiss and a Relationship Upgrade during their Valentine's Day movie marathon. Dukey and Missy (Sissy's pet pink labradoodle) do the same after returning inside from frolicking in the flowers. Once Jermaine and Sissy tell the latter's mother about their new romantic relationship, Mrs. Blakely embraces the two preteens in a Group Hug that soon becomes a Bear Hug because of how tightly Mrs. Blakely squeezes them.
  • Shout-Out: The fanfic shares its name with an episode of Pokémon: The Original Series.
  • Something about a Rose: On Valentine's Day, Jermaine surprises Sissy (who he's been crushing on since the previous summer) with a bouquet of red roses after inviting her over to his house for the holiday. She responds by gasping, blushing, and smiling from ear to ear.
  • So Proud of You: After Dukey and Jermaine return home from beating Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy, the Tests tell the dog and boy how proud they are of them for defeating Eugene and saving Porkbelly. Jermaine gets teary-eyed because his biological parents are the only ones who ever said that they were proud of him. Once the Tests announce that they're officially adopting Jermaine later on in the story, the Tests tell him that his birth parents would be proud of the person he's becoming. Jermaine cries Tears of Joy as he hugs the Tests.
  • Super-Speed: Mary and Susan use a large machine to give Dukey and Jermaine super speed (along with Flight and Super-Strength) to battle Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy as the latter rampages through downtown Porkbelly in a Humongous Mecha. Dukey and Jermaine zip around the twins' lab to test out their new speed.
  • Super-Strength: Mary and Susan use a large machine to give Dukey and Jermaine super strength (along with Flight and Super-Speed) to battle Eugene/Bling-Bling Boy as the latter rampages through downtown Porkbelly in a Humongous Mecha. Dukey and Jermaine accidentally dent some of the twins' equipment before gaining full control of their new strength. Dukey and Jermaine then use their strength to crush the mecha's hands and then tear the mecha itself apart piece by piece.
  • Tears of Joy: Jermaine cries tears of joy after the Test family announce that they're officially adopting him.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The end of the story takes place during Valentine's Day. Jermaine invites Sissy to spend the holiday with him at his house, surprising her with a box of chocolates and a bouquet of red roses in the process.
  • Wingding Eyes: Jermaine and Sissy's eyes transform into red hearts during their Held Gaze after their Accidental Hand-Hold moment while having a Valentine's Day movie marathon at his house.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Near the end of the story, Jermaine finally confesses his romantic feelings to Sissy after many months of hesitation due to feeling unworthy of her affection because of her athleticism, beauty, and intelligence. Once he admits the reason for waiting to her, she says he doesn't need to downplay or ignore his own positive qualities and tells him he's an awesome guy.
