The comics are divided into volumes, each one running for five issues. Volume 1 takes place between episodes 8 and 9 of season 1note . Volume 2, titled Pilgrimage for the trade paperback, takes place between episodes 3 and 4 of season 2. Volume 3, Absolution, takes place between seasons 4 and 5.
A motion comic version of Volume 1 exists, featuring voice acting from the show's cast. It can be found on the DreamWorksTV YouTube channel. A playlist is here.

These comics contain examples of:
- Awesomeness by Analysis: Pidge pulls this off in issue #4 when she's forced to fight her teammates for the Sphinx's test of the body. She analyzes their strengths and weaknesses to incapacitate them.
- Big Ball of Violence: In Vol. 2 Issue #2, Kuvyr and Kalar get into one of these over Hunk.
- Exotic Extended Marriage: A husband having multiple wives is considered normal in DavDabHau culture; in Vol. 2, Kuvyr and Kalar both pledge themselves maritally to Hunk, who objects to the "multiple wives" thing.
- Fighting Your Friend: In issue #4, Pidge takes the Sphinx's test of the body. The other Paladins are hit with mind control fungus and she has to fight them.
- Lame Pun Reaction: In issue #3, after the dragon turns back to her humanoid form and staggers, Lance remarks, "Poor gal. You seem like you're really "dragon"."Hunk: Wow.
Pidge: Aw, man.

Shiro: Lance, please. - Leg Cling: Page 1 of issue #3 has Lance imagining himself posing heroically in front of a dragon while a princess clings to his leg.
- Mirror Match: In issue #4, Pidge undergoes the Sphinx's test of the mind, which involves playing chess against a fungus that scans your mind to create a perfect copy of your skills. She beats it by getting each of the other Paladins to monitor some assigned pieces, keeping their eyes open for possible moves.
- Proud Warrior Race Guy: The DavDabHau from Vol. 2, a clan of legendary warriors and shamans.
- Riddle of the Sphinx: In issue #4, the Sphinx's last test, a test of the spirit, is a riddle.
- Series Continuity Error: Vol. 2 mixes up Kalar and Kuvyr's identities. In issue #2, Kuvyr is the red one with the eyepatch, making Kalar the pale blue one. However, in later issues, Kalar is the red one.
- Ship Tease: In Vol. 2, Hunk tries to tell Kalar and Kuvyr that he can't marry either of them, saying, "You haven't met my mom, and there's this rock girl, and—"
- Smart People Play Chess: The Sphinx's test of the mind in issue #4 is a game of chess, played essentially against yourself.
- The Three Trials: In issue #4, Pidge has to complete the challenges of the Great Universal Sphinx — a test of the body, a test of the mind, and a test of the spirit.
- Trumplica: Krupump in Vol. 2 is basically a big orange space wolf version of Donald Trump, with a lot of similar facial expressions and speech patterns. When Kuvyr and Kalar tell the Paladins about him, they mention he made a dubious promise to "make the DavDabHau great again".
- Weakness Turns Her On: In Vol. 2 Issue #2, Kuvyr and Kalar become enamoured with Hunk after he finds a non-violent way to deal with a threatening creature, citing his "sensitivity and nurturing nature".
- Wolf Man: The DavDabHau from Vol. 2.
